General Overview Country: Spain Type: Scheduled Group Tour Region: Balearic Islands Theme: Horse Back Riding and Walking Trails City: Palma de Mallorca Group Size: 1 - 16 People Duration: 8 days / 7 nights Price from: € Introduction This classic traverse of the mountains, which form the islands Backbone is now a firm favourite and it´s easy to see why. During the week well walk from the pretty village of Valldemossa to the town of Pollensa in the far- flung north. The scenery and the colour youll view on this six day trek is simply breathtaking. Centuries old traders paths previously used by old rural industries will show us the way through canyons and over peaks. Just imagine setting off each day knowing your going to be staying somewhere completely different that night. To get there youll only need a day sack as this trek offers full vehicle assistance for the rest of your things. It´s a land only tour which means you getting to the start and from the finish of the trek. Level of difficulty: This holiday should present no difficulties to anyone in good condition who´s used to mountain walking. Most of the route is on well defined footpaths, but there are a few stretches over rough ground. The trek is graded B+, because there´s some 2000ft+ climb days and on the Massanella approach there´s a short scramble. Day by day itinerary DAY 1: WELCOME TO PALMA DE MALLORCA - Arrival at Palma airport, where you`ll transfer across to our first accommodation in the capital Palma itself. - Taxi fare to this venue is 35 euros approximately. Or alternatively one can take the public bus into central Palma. - On arrival at your hotel, information will be given so that you can take full advantage of time spent in the historic, yet very cosmopolitan city of Palma. Perhaps visiting the Cathedral, or the impressive Bellver Castle. - Our hotel is family run and extremely well located. This evening we all dine together, so that we can fully appreciate what lies ahead in the coming days. Pure Magic! - Please arrive at the hotel before 8pm if you want to take part in the evening meal / Get together / Brief outline of the week. (Details of hotel in Palma and how to get to it, sent with booking confirmation) D DAY 2: VALLDEMOSSA - DEIA - Breakfast - We transfer to the colourful mountain village of Valldemossa, where we allow time to visit the fascinating Costa Nord Centre, full of information on the vicinity and the Tramuntana hills. I - It´s now time to start the trek north - Our route climbs up to reach the majestic "Archdukes Pathway", offering stunning coastal views, before descending to the heavenly setting of Deia. - 6 Hrs Walking Approx. - Our accommodation is a comfortable hostal, once a prominent town house. - We dine together in Deia and stroll its streets by moonlight! B, PL, D DAY 3: DEIA - SOLLER - After breakfast we continue the walk with our destination being Port Soller situated on the edge of a crescent shaped bay and surrounded by high mountain scenery. To get there from Deia we take the old fisherman´s way above the sea to the hamlet of Lluc Alcari, then climb up to the houses of Son Mico with there lofty position, to view as far as the eye can see. - The high balcony path is dominated by gnarled olive trees and great photographic opportunities. - We arrive at the back of Port Soller, and conveniently right behind a bar, before checking in to our seafront accommodation for the next two nights. 3.5 Hrs walking approx. B, PL, D DAY 4: SOLLER - Breakfast - Rest day! But that´s entirely up to you, because a guided walk in the locality will be on offer. (This will usually be decided in Soller). Whatever you choose to do, having another day in this marvelous valley with its rich vegetation and attractive warm stone buildings is a must. B DAY 5: SOLLER - TOSSALS MOUNTAIN REFUGE - Breakfast - Today´s leg of the journey takes us through an incredible variety of scenery. - We leave Soller, and head towards the pretty picture postcard hamlet of Biniaraix to start the ascent of a 16th century limestone staircase, which has some of the most spectacular vistas anywhere in the Med. - We continue after this to summit the distinct cone shaped peak of L`Ofre at 1091m. - The day just gets better and better, as we follow the water pipeline from Cuber Reservoir down through a series of tunnels to reach a hidden valley where we find tonight´s place to sleep "The Tossals Verds Mountain Refuge". - This is trekking at its best staying up in the hills away from urbanisation, under a star-studded sky. - The meal at Tossals will give us a great chance to sample local cuisine, and sleeping is in a very comfortable, recently built bunk style dormitory. 6 to 8 hrs. walking this day approximately. B, D DAY 6: TOSSALS - LLUCH MONASTERY - Breakfast - Waking refreshed and ready to tackle anything. Today´s objective is to scale the island´s highest accessible peak "Massanella" 1352m. from its rocky southern flanks, then to drop down to the religious heartbeat of the island "The Monastery of Lluch". - Massenella boasts being higher than anything in the British Isles and to stand proud on its summit is, to say the least, rewarding! - Lluch Monastery is our accommodation for the night and naturally an experience not to be missed. Clean cotton sheets are placed neatly at the end of your bed, but you have to make it yourself. - Then it´s down to eat a well earned meal with the rest of the group. B, PL, D DAY 7: LLUCH - POLLENSA - Breakfast - Our last walking day starts after breakfast at Lluch. The route takes us up through Holm Oak woodland to a plateau called "Coll Pelat" then cuts across a hillside to the spring water bottling plant at Binifaldo. - Here we follow the Cami Vell de Pollensa (The old way north before the asphalt road was built) hugging the sides of the mighty Puig Tomir mountain. - Our arrival in Pollensa square marks the end of the trek, but never the memories! - We are transferred across to Alcudia old town and the final accommodation on the tour. A centrally situated hostal with plenty of character. - This is our last night together and I guess we`ll have a lot to talk about over dinner. B, D DAY 8: POLLENSA - PALMA - Breakfast - The tour ends after breakfast on day eight. - The Homeward journey and getting to Palma Airport : A taxi to Palma from Alcudia costs 60 euros approx. The public bus from Alcudia requires a change in central Palma and of course the costs are much cheaper than a taxi. Any information needed on this subject will be available from the tour leader. Island Studies Journal , Vol. 9, No. 2, 2014, pp. 239-258 Tourism capitalism and island urbanization: tourist accommodation diffusion in the Balearics, 1936-2010. Antoni Pons Universitat de les Illes Balears, Spain [email protected] Onofre Rullán Salamanca Universitat de les Illes Balears, Spain [email protected] & Ivan Murray Universitat de les Illes Balears, Spain [email protected] ABSTRACT: The Balearic Islands are one of the main tourism regions in Europe, and tourism has been the structural capitalist activity of urban growth there since the 1950s. Mapping tourist accommodation in the Balearics might help spatially explain the important socio-spatial transformation of a small archipelago in the Western Mediterranean. This paper analyses the diffusion of tourist accommodations as the main vehicle for urbanization since the 1950s. The tourism production of space has gone in parallel to economic cycles with particular urban expressions related to the different regimes of accumulation. Over time, as access to sea, air, and road transport, availability of investment capital, and institutional support has changed, so too have the directions of urban tourism development in the islands. Keywords : Balearic Islands, diffusion, economic cycles, Spain, tourism, tourist accommodation maps, urbanization © 2014 - Institute of Island Studies, University of Prince Edward Island, Canada. Introduction Urbanization occurs differently on different kinds of islands. Islands specializing in tourism services may feature distinctive urbanization patterns due to the dynamics of this particular industry, which involves a coincidence between spaces of production and consumption. The spatial factors affecting islands play a variety of roles here, both increasing the amount of coastline (which has proven so attractive to mass tourism) and conditioning the means of transport and access to tourism sites.

  • 11. Calvià En La Época Contemporánea A

Eocene-Oligocene sediments are virtually absent in Minorca but crop out extensively in Majorca, ii) Contractional structures in Minorca differ in direction (aligned SW-NE in Majorca and Ibiza and N-S in Minorca) and in age from those in Majorca and Ibiza. In addition, Paleozoic deposits of Minorca do not correlate with those of Sardinia, where in addition the Triassic sediments are not very abundant. Contractional deformation in Sardinia is in part older (late Eocene-early Miocene) than in Minorca (early Miocene?). Given its Neogene clockwise rotation, Minorca cannot be considered a small block dragged by the early Miocene counter clockwise rotation of the Corsica-Sardinia block. Furthermore, the Paleozoic and Mesozoic stratigraphy of Minorca (siliciclastic late Paleozoic rocks, Triassic Germanic facies and Jurassic carbonates) has affinities with that of the southern part of the Catalan Coastal Ranges.
