Cerithiform gastropods possess high-spired shells with small apertures, anterior canals or si- nuses, and usually one or more spiral rows of tubercles, spines or nodes. This shell morphology occurs mostly within the superfamily Cerithioidea. Several morphologic characters of cerithiform shells are adap- tive within five broad functional areas: (1) defence from shell-peeling predators (external sculpture, pre- adult internal barriers, preadult varices, adult aperture) (2) burrowing and infaunal life (burrowing sculp- tures, bent and elongated inhalant adult siphon, plough-like adult outer lip, flattened dorsal region of last whorl), (3) clamping of the aperture onto a solid substrate (broad tangential adult aperture), (4) stabilisa- tion of the shell when epifaunal (broad adult outer lip and at least three types of swellings located on the left ventrolateral side of the last whorl in the adult stage), and (5) righting after accidental overturning (pro- jecting dorsal tubercles or varix on the last or penultimate whorl, in one instance accompanied by hollow ventral tubercles that are removed by abrasion against the substrate in the adult stage). Most of these char- acters are made feasible by determinate growth and a countdown ontogenetic programme. -

Taxonomic implications of the residual colour patterns of ampullinid gastropods and their contribution to the discrimination from naticids. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 56 (2): 329–347. The diversity of residual colour patterns is revealed for the first time in the European fossil Ampullinidae. The colour pat− terns were studied under Ultraviolet (UV) light in approximately 3100 specimens belonging to 83 species, 12 genera (Ampullina, Globularia, Crommium, Amaurellina, Pachycrommium, Amauropsina, Ampullonatica, Eocernina, Ampul− linopsis, Vanikoropsis, Pictavia, and Ampullospira) and three subgenera (Globularia, Deshayesia, and Cernina within the genus Globularia). Forty−six Cainozoic species revealed residual colour patterns and 29 of them, belonging to six genera (Ampullina, Globularia, Crommium, Amaurellina, Pachycrommium, Amauropsina), are described herein as ex− amples representing the entire diversity of the encountered colour patterns. These patterns are most diverse during the Middle Eocene coincident with the period of highest taxonomic diversity of the Ampullinidae. Four basic classes, re− garded as containing possible homologous colour patterns in terms of pigments incorporation modalities, are proposed. Class I, a fluorescent wide diffuse area or spiral stripes, occurs in most of the species, while the three others are more pecu− liar. Class II, fluorescent axial zigzagging stripes, Class III, fluorescent axial to slightly opisthocline stripes or segments, and Class IV, fluorescent patches forming axial segments by coalescence, allow an easy distinction between the genera Globularia, Pachycrommium, and three peculiar species of Ampullina. -

Giant Gastropods of the Genus Campanile from the Caribbean Eocene

December 1987 Giant gastropods of the genus Campanile from the Caribbean Eocene By Peter Jung') Dedicated to the memory of Dr. Hans G Kugler Introduction The famous Ceriihium giganteum from middle Eocene deposits of the Paris Basin is known for almost two centuries (Lamarck 1804). Its best illustrations have been pub¬ lished by early authors such as Lamarck (1806, Pl. 14. Fig. 1), Deshayes (1837, P1.42, Figs. 1. 2). and Cossmann (1906, Pl. 1. Figs. 1, 2. Pl.2. Fig. 1). Ceriihium giganteum is the type species of Campanile (subsequent designation by Sacco 1895, p. 37), but there has been some controversy concerning the type species of this genus, which has recently been commented on by Houbrick (1981, pp.280- 281). The stratigraphie distribution of species of Campanile has been summarized by Cossmann (1906. p. 73), and additional occurrences are listed in Wrigley (1940, pp. 110— 111). The peak of diversity and distribution of species of Campanile was reached in Europe during middle Eocene times (Cossmann 1906, p. 73; Boussac 1912; Wrigley 1940; Delpey 1941, p. 23). Campanile giganteum is the largest species of the genus; according to Houbrick (1981, p. 264; 1984, p. 232) specimens may reach a height of one meter. After middle Eocene times there was a sharp decrease in species diversity. In fact there are no records of Campanile from beds of Miocene age. The next younger record is C.gigas (Martin) (1881, p. 117, P1.6, Fig.4, Pl. 7, Figs. 1, 2) from Pliocene deposits of Java. -

PEZA** (With 2 plates) Manuscript submitted on October 1",1996, the revised manuscript on November 18'\ 1996 Summary Based on material from the Barremian/Aptian of Albania, the nerineacean Adaptyxis n. gen. is described. It possesses high turriculate shells with concave whorls of moderate height. Because of the hollow columella it is assigned to the Umboniidae LYSSENKO& AllEY. The columella is hollow. Of the internal plaits, the adapical columellar plait is very small. The other columellar plait, the palatal plait and the parietal plait are strong. Because of the internal morphology, Adaptyxis is considered as transitional between the genus Affiniptyxis LYSSENKO& AllEY and Plesioplocus PCHELINTSEY.Synchronously, Neoptyxis PCHELINTSEY evolved from Affiniptyxis. Both genera are part of the Simploptyxidae HAKOBJAN.An origin of the Umboniidae and the Ptygmatidae from a Melanioptyxis-like group in the Jurassic is considered. It is not clear whether the Nerineidae originated from the same group as the other nerineacean families or from the Mathildoid family Anoptychoidae, as was postulated by BANDEL(1995). -

The subject of this study is the description of eight specimens of fossil gastropods Campanile lachesis Bayan, 1870, family Campanilidae, from the fund of the Regional Museum of History in Kardzhali. They were found in the area of the village of Gorna Krepost, Kardzhali Municipality, at the eastern foot of the Archeological Complex Perperikon, in the upper Eocene (Priabonian) limestone layers of the so-called Beli Plast Rhyodacite Complex. The paleoecological traits of the present fauna give ground to infer that this was a very shallow reefal environment with a rocky substrate sandy bottom, overgrown with algae, and the water was warm, with normal salinity. KOLLMANN2 (With 10 plates and 1 figure) Manuscript submitted on April 7th 2011, the revised manuscript on February 8th 2012 Abstract A diverse gastropod fauna of 66 taxa is recorded from Barremian deposits of Serre de Bleyton, SW of the village of Arnayon (Department Drôme, France). Due to the unfavourable preservation of most specimens, only 18 previously described species could be identified, while the major- ity was named in open nomenclature. Newly described species are: Nummogaultina tricarinata, Pseudoliotina? parva, Brouzetdiscus? carinatus, Colpomphalus spiralocostatus, Costatompha- lus moosleitneri and Bleytonella circumlata. Brouzetdiscus, Costatomphalus and Bleytonella were identified as new genera. Barremian gastropod faunas of south France described in the ear- lier literature can be assigned to different facies. Accordingly, the great majority of taxa recorded from Serre de Bleyton inhabited shallow water environments of the outer platform. Only two taxa originate from inner platformlagoons. A single taxon of land snails has by-passed the shelf before it was deposited in basin floor fans of the Vocontian Trough.
