THE BAIT of SATAN SESSION 8 – the Rock of Offense THE BAIT OF SATAN SESSION 8 – The Rock of Offense TO BELIEVE: OBEY NOTES 1 Peter 2:6- (NKJV) – 6 Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, “Behold, I lay in Zion [.] A chief cornerstone, elect, precious, And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.” 7 Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone,” Believe and Disobedient are opposites. Believe in the days of the Bible writers meant “to obey”. Today it means “acknowledge & believe in someone’s existence”. Hebrews 3:12 (NKJV) – Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief [disobey] in departing from the living God; Hebrews 3:15-19 (NKJV) – 15 while it is said: “Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” 16 For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses? 17 Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief. [disobedience] Grace has been perverted today. The big cover-up: “I know that I am not obeying and living like I should, but thank God for his grace.” Not everyone that says “Lord, Lord” will enter the kingdom. CONFESSING AND DOING The evidence that you have the grace of God, is that you obey. People that consistently and repeatedly rebel and disobey, do not really know God. STUMBLING STONE (HUGE ROCK) In the Ministry of Jesus, He is called the Rock of Offense. Jesus offended people Not true believers Not obedient People with wrong foundations in their lives Luke 2:25-30 (NKJV) – 25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law, 28 he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said: 29 “Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, According to Your word; 30 For my eyes have seen Your salvation. The Pharisees did not know who Jesus was. [They can quote the first 5 books of the bible] Luke 2:33-35 (NKJV) – 33 And Joseph and His mother marveled at those things which were spoken of Him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against 35 “(yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” Jesus was the sword that pierced and offended people Matthew 15:7-14 (NKJV) – 7 “Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: 8 ‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. 9 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’” 10 When He had called the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear and understand: 11 “Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.” 12 Then His disciples came and said to Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?” 13 But He answered and said, “Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. 14 “Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.” What is Jesus saying – God the Father will use offense to root people out that are not planted in His Kingdom. SEEKER-FRIENDLY MESSAGES In America we preach that Jesus is no longer a stumbling stone; we reduce Him down to a little stone that anyone can walk over. Some Pastors preach seeker friendly messages and people can continue to live in sin and feel comfortable. Truth will piece and penetrate – the character of God. Goal of Christianity is to conform to His image. We should not seek God for what He can do for us, but instead for who He is. Matthew 13:54-58 (NKJV) – 54 When He had come to His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, “Where did this Man get this wisdom and these Page 2 mighty works? 55 “Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? 56 “And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this Man get all these things?” 57 So they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.” 58 Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief. The truth offended these people. When Jesus started speaking the Word of God. THE FAMILY Mark 3:21 (NIV) – When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.” Mark 3:21 (NKJV) – But when His own people heard about this, they went out to lay hold of Him, for they said, “He is out of His mind.” Mark 3:31-35 (NKJV) – 31 Then His brothers and His mother came, and standing outside they sent to Him, calling Him. 32 And a multitude was sitting around Him; and they said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are outside seeking You.” 33 But He answered them, saying, “Who is My mother, or My brothers?” 34 And He looked around in a circle at those who sat about Him, and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! 35 “For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother.” When you obey God, He will take care of your family. CONFRONTATION WITH TRUTH Jesus is offending people with truth. John 11:21 (NKJV) - Now Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” Luke 7:18- (NKJV) – 18 Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things. 19 And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to Jesus, saying, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?” 20 When the men had come to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?’ ” 21 And that very hour He cured many of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight. 22 Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them. 23 “And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.” Jesus is the Rock of Offense. He is the absolute truth and is truth. Page 3 .

  • The Earliest Magdalene: Varied Portrayals in Early Gospel Narratives
Chapter 1 The Earliest Magdalene: Varied Portrayals in Early Gospel Narratives Edmondo Lupieri In the early writings produced by the followers of Jesus, Mary Magdalene is connected with key events in the narrative regarding Jesus: his death on the cross, his burial, and his resurrection.1 At first sight, her figure seems to grow in importance through time. Her name and figure, indeed, are completely ab- sent from the oldest extant texts written by a follower of Jesus, the authentic letters of Paul.2 This is particularly striking, since 1 Cor 15:5–8 contains the ear- liest known series of witnesses to the resurrection, but only men are named specifically.3 1 All translations are the author’s. The Greek text of the New Testament is from Eberhard Nestle et al., eds., Novum Testamentum Graece, 27th ed. (Stuttgart: Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft, 1993). 2 This phenomenon seems to parallel the minimal importance of the mother of Jesus in Paul’s letters. He mentions her only once and indirectly, when stressing that Jesus was born “of a woman” and “under the Law” (Gal 4:4). Besides using her existence to reaffirm the humanity (and Jewishness) of Jesus (for a similar use of a similar expression to describe the humanity of John the Baptist, see Luke 7:28 / Matt 11:11), Paul does not seem to care about who that “woman” was. This does not mean that Paul is particularly uninterested in Mary Magdalene or in Jesus’s mother, but that generally in his letters Paul does not seem to be interested in any detail regarding the earthly life of Jesus or in the persons who were around him when he was in his human flesh (see further n.

  • Women with Jesus at the Cross and the Tomb Bible Study
Women with Jesus at the Cross and the Tomb Bible Study [Please provide : musical accompaniment; Bibles, hymnals, and copies of the Bible study for attendees.] Beginning with Ash Wednesday and for 40 days following, we are in the period of the church year called Lent. It is a time to remember the suffering, death, and burial in preparation for the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As we approach and journey through Lent, let us focus on the women who were present when Jesus was crucified on Calvary and later at His tomb. Let us begin with prayer : Lord Jesus Christ, be with us as we study Your Word, meditating upon those women who were near You at the cross and the tomb. In Your holy name. Amen. Sing “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” LSB 425 or 426, TLH 175, LW 114 or 115 I. Standing Near the Cross – read John 19:25-27 • Four women are mentioned: o Mary, the mother of Jesus o His mother’s sister – tradition holds this is Salome, mother of James and John, the sons of Zebedee o Mary, the wife of Clopas – the only time she or Clopas are mentioned o Mary Magdalene The women took a risk by being present at the cross. It took courage for them to stand there in the midst of the hatred and ridicule. Their attendance was intended to encourage Jesus. Jesus’ mother, Mary, is experiencing what Simeon had predicted years before in Luke 2:35. As she stood there, her grief must have been nearly unbelievable.

  • A New Perspective on John the Baptist's Failure to Support Jesus
A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON JOHN THE BAPTIST'S FAILURE TO SUPPORT JESUS Laurent Guymot At the heart of all dialogues between Christians and Jews there is, inevitably, the question of the Messiah: "Are you he who is to come, or shall we wait for another?" —Jürgen Moltmann pplied to the New Testament, some of the tasks of the historical- critical method are to separate layers of redaction work in the Gospels, to Adetermine the oldest strata of tradition, and to present the most probably authentic words of Jesus and the events of his life. Conservative evangelical Christians are generally hostile to such an approach and insist that the complete New Testament is inspired and historically true. One possible meeting point between conservatives and historically-minded liberals which has gained some recent support is, to assert that since Christianity is founded on the resurrected Jesus, it need not be threatened by historical inquiry into Jesus' earthly ministry. One reason is sufficient, in my eyes, to justify the historical-critical method as part of Unificationist studies. Unificationism claims to rely not only on revelation but also on science, and it cannot be denied that archeology and critical exegesis, the basic tools of historical research, are scientific in nature. Beyond the polemic that they generate, most scholars involved in the "quest Laurent Guyénot graduated from the Unification Theological Seminary in 1990. He is presently director of Editions Exergue, a French publishing company. He is the author of three books, one of which, Le roi sans prophète (The King without Prophet) is about the relationship between Jesus and John the Baptist.

The text on which this paper is focused is the ending of the Gospel of Mark and the major textual variant known as the “Freer Logion.” I will argue that the Freer Logion was purposely inserted to conclude themes that were left open by the author of Mark and not addressed by the scribe who inserted the Longer Ending of Mark.1 There seems to be a problem with the ending of the Gospel According to Mark.2 When one studies the various manuscripts of Mark, one finds at least four different endings that are not similar; they are actually very different (Metzger 1975, 122).

The Bait of Satan #5 Luke 17:1 - Jesus Warns of Offenses - Then He said to the disciples, “It is impossible that no offenses (stumbling Blocks) should come, but woe to him through whom they do come! Week 1 It imprisons countless Christians, severs relationships and widens the existing breaches between us. It is the trap of offense. Week 2 We must come to the place where we trust God and not flesh. Many give lip service to God as their source, yet they live as orphans. They take their own lives in their hands while they confess with their mouths, “He is lord.” Week 3 If you’ve been mistreated, do you have the right to be offended? • To become offended would only fulfill the enemy’s purpose of getting you out of the will of God. • We must remember that nothing can come against us without the Lord’s knowledge of it before it ever happens. Week 4 Offended Christians also cut off their own ability to produce fruit. Initially it is so much easier when we take matters into our own hands, rather than waiting on a righteous God. God tests His servants with obedience. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 Peter 2:6-8 NKJV – 6 “Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious, and he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.” 7 Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone,” 8 and “A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.” They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.

Sunday, March 21, 2010 Sermon Outline…page 1 “And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus, Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.” Acts 4:36,37. In this unique way the Holy Spirit introduces God’s Elect throughout the ages to Barnabas, whom the Holy Ghost elsewhere calls, “a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith;” to wit: “Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen traveled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only. And some of them were men of Cyprus (think, Joses, surnamed Barnabas) and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus. And the hand of the Lord was with them; and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord. Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem; and they sent forth BARNABAS, that he should go as far as Antioch. Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord. FOR HE WAS A GOOD MAN, AND FULL OF THE HOLY GHOST AND OF FAITH; and much people was added unto the Lord. Then departed BARNABAS to Tarsus, for to seek Saul. And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch.

  • The Relatives of Jesus by John W
6 The Relatives of Jesus by John W. Wenham Mr. Wenham's interest in Dr. John J. Gunther's paper on "The Family of Jesus" (January-March, 1974) was such that it stimulated him to write something on the subject himself, and it has given us great pleasure to receive it. Although his contributions to THE EVANGELICAL QUARTERLY over the years have been all too few, Mr. Wenham has been a friend of the QUARTERLY from very early days, and is known personally to many readers, and by name to more, as former Vice-Principal of Tyndale Hall, Bristol, and former Warden of Latimer House, Oxford-not to speak of his Elements of New Testament Greek and other publications, reviewed elsewhere in this issue. ARMONIZATION is part of the stock-in-trade of every historian. H Presented with apparently reliable independent sources, he pre fers to harmonize their details, rather than impugn their veracity, if he can do so without unreasonably forcing the sense or straining probab ilities. One particular problem is when to identify and when to distinguish persons of the same name appearing in different contexts in different documents. To fail to identify the same person in different documents may be to deny oneself a flood of light. Wrongly to identify two different people may be to distort and confuse. This problem was raised in an acute form by the stimulating article of J. J. Gunther in the January 1974 number of this journal, entitled "The Family of Jesus". Firstly, there is the identity of the Marys. Mary is easily the commonest girl's name in the New Testa ment, there being probably seven different persons so named.

  • Love the Truth About Jesus A. Introduction 1
THE TWELVE (5) Love the Truth about Jesus A. Introduction 1. Who were the Twelve? The Twelve were men who were called to believe in Jesus and to follow Him. The Twelve were men who were chosen from a larger group of disciples to be apostles and were given what they needed to do this role. 2. What do we learn from The Twelve about what it means to be disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ? Andrew taught us that disciples of Jesus introduce people to Jesus. Simon Peter taught us that disciples of Jesus are changed by Jesus to be like Jesus. B. Meet John 1. John along with his older brother James worked with Andrew and Simon as fishermen. “These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John.” (Matthew 10:2) His father was Zebedee. “And so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.” (Luke 5:10) His mother was Salome, most likely was the daughter of a priest, and possibly the sister of Mary, the mother of Jesus. “Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs.” (Mark 15:40-41) “When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body.” (Mark 16:1) “Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.” (Matthew 27:56) “Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus.

  • Was Mary the Name of Jesus' Mother?
Was Mary the Name of Jesus’ Mother? A Source-Critical Perspective By Gary Greenberg Blogging at biblemythhistory.com (This essay was originally published on the Bible and Interpretation site in September 2020. There may be some slight formatting differences between this version and the published version.) If we had no reliable written sources mentioning the name of Jesus’ mother, a good guess would be Mary. Statistically, it was one of the most popular, if not the most popular, name for Jewish women in the first century.1 In the Christian scriptures, more women have the name Mary than any other name. The question I wish to raise here is whether we have any reliable written evidence that Mary was the name of Jesus’ mother. Following standard scholarly practices, I will rely on the following source-critical principles. • Paul’s letters appeared before the first gospel, and were written about twenty or more years after the death of Jesus. • Mark was the first gospel to be written. Most scholars date it to 65 C.E. or later, about thirty-five years after the death of Jesus. • Matthew and Luke both made extensive use of written Mark as a source of information about the life of Jesus. Matthew dates to about 85 C.E or later. Luke dates to about 90– 110 C.E. • It is widely believed that John had no knowledge of any of the gospels in written form, a thesis I challenge in my recently released book The Case for a Proto-Gospel: Recovering the Common Written Source Behind Mark and John.
