TEXT: JOHN 19:25-27 THE HEART OF THE LESSON: A CONVERSATION ABOUT FAMILY FROM A “CROSS” PERSPECTIVE Introduction: John, the writer of this book, is giving us a detailed and informative account of Jesus’ final moments on the Cross. Although he seemed to have, through history, rejected the recordings of other evangelists’ passages, now he comes face to face with the sufferings and death of his Master’s chain and cross. John has a renewed perspective because of the Cross. In fact, what John rejected from other evangelists, he now is placing great interest and emphasis on what he is about to witness. There were seven important conversations or last sayings that Jesus had on the Cross. In this lesson, we will look at the third saying which was Jesus showing concern and care for His family. 1. KINGDOM CITIZENS SIMPLY MUST KNOW THIS: “CARE FOR YOUR FAMILY;” (V25 NIV) says, “Near the cross of Jesus stood His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.” Jesus was sending a powerful message that family matters! Family counts! Family means something! Jesus sees Mary standing there. -

Jesus Threefold Victory Over Satan
JESUS THREEFOLD VICTORY OVER SATAN Satan was the reason for Redemption. There could be no Redemption without defeating Satan. Satan’s eternal defeat was part of the Redemptive plan. Hebrews 9:12 (NIV) But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. Satan is Eternally defeated. Jesus Victory in His Earth Walk John 1:14 (NIV) The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. This was God’s invasion of the sense realm. Here natural man lived. It could not work without an incarnation. An angel’s visit would not help. God had to come himself. His first combat with Satan with which we are familiar is recorded in Matthew 4:1-11 and in Luke 4:1-13. In both of these records we have Satan attempting to overcome the Incarnate One as he had overcome Adam in the Garden. He tempted Jesus through the senses the same way he tempted Adam, but Jesus met him with the Word, and conquered him when He came down out of the mount. -

Chapter 1 The Earliest Magdalene: Varied Portrayals in Early Gospel Narratives Edmondo Lupieri In the early writings produced by the followers of Jesus, Mary Magdalene is connected with key events in the narrative regarding Jesus: his death on the cross, his burial, and his resurrection.1 At first sight, her figure seems to grow in importance through time. Her name and figure, indeed, are completely ab- sent from the oldest extant texts written by a follower of Jesus, the authentic letters of Paul.2 This is particularly striking, since 1 Cor 15:5–8 contains the ear- liest known series of witnesses to the resurrection, but only men are named specifically.3 1 All translations are the author’s. The Greek text of the New Testament is from Eberhard Nestle et al., eds., Novum Testamentum Graece, 27th ed. (Stuttgart: Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft, 1993). 2 This phenomenon seems to parallel the minimal importance of the mother of Jesus in Paul’s letters. He mentions her only once and indirectly, when stressing that Jesus was born “of a woman” and “under the Law” (Gal 4:4). Besides using her existence to reaffirm the humanity (and Jewishness) of Jesus (for a similar use of a similar expression to describe the humanity of John the Baptist, see Luke 7:28 / Matt 11:11), Paul does not seem to care about who that “woman” was. This does not mean that Paul is particularly uninterested in Mary Magdalene or in Jesus’s mother, but that generally in his letters Paul does not seem to be interested in any detail regarding the earthly life of Jesus or in the persons who were around him when he was in his human flesh (see further n. -

Blessing to All: By: Richard Pickard This is a time of confusion within America and around the world. Great powers are at work, backed by those that follow the Prince of Darkness against those that follow the Prince of Peace. Boys can think they are girls and enter into girls’ bathrooms and vice versa. Gender is no longer about what sex organs you were born with… it is up to the child to decide. Parents, politicians, and the elite are abrogating the use of reason for false narratives. Church leaders of all denominations stay silent and the flock is looking for true Christian leaders. Some televangelists tell their followers that God wants you to be rich. That is great, but the Cross of Christ should also be preached. All people will experience disappointments in life, and if you keep praying to get rich then you miss the point of the Gospel. And if it doesn’t happen, then you might lose your hope in Christ and His promise to us. Whenever you can, teach your children about real life challenges and that you don’t always get what you pray for. Children will watch and learn from the parents, no matter where we live on this earth. If you shout and curse, your children will think it is okay. If you teach them to pray and to bless others, they will. -

Was Jesus an Only Child? There are some who claim that Mary had children in addition to Jesus, citing one or more of the following Scriptural passages: “...his mother and his brethren were standing without... ” (Matthew 12:46) “Is this not the carpenter, son of Mary, the brother of James and Joseph and Judas and Simon? Do not his sisters live here near us? ” (Mark 6:3) “For even his own brothers did not believe in him. ” (John 7:5) “...with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. ” (Acts 1:14) “...and the Lord ’s brothers... ” (1 Corinthians 9:5) “But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son.” (Matthew 1:25) The Church teaches us that Mary was perpetually virgin and this is what we affirm every time we recite the Confetitor. Why the difference? It comes with the fact that almost 20 centuries have passed since the books of the Bible were written and customs have changed, along with the fact that some people read into the text ’s meanings which were not intended. First century customs cannot be interpreted with 20 th century values. In the first case, what was the custom for calling someone your “brother, ” “sister, ” or using the collective term of “brethren? ” In Genesis 14:14, Lot is called Abraham ’s “brother ” but Genesis 11:27 tells us that Lot was the son of Aran, Abraham ’s brother. This shows that the terms were used to include cousins, but they were not even limited to close relatives (see Deuteronomy 23:7 and Jeremiah 34:9 for examples). -

Meet the disciples Here’s a synopsis of the information the Bible gives us about the 12 disciples. The more you know about them, the more you can relate to their experiences as they followed Jesus. Even when fellow apostles Matthew and John write down the story of Jesus, they give more attention to Peter than themselves. And for good reason: of all the apostles (besides maybe Judas), Peter is most involved in the grand story of Jesus. Peter rocks His original name is Simon, but Jesus give him the moniker the moment they meet. “Peter,” means “stone,” and the name sticks (Jn 1:42). A minority of scho- lars maintain the identity of this disciple is consistent with John, the son of Zebedee, whom they also maintain was the author of the Fourth Gospel. To support this posi- tion, the commonplace fiction of Galilean fishermen belonging to an aspiring “middle- class” is asserted. This article reviews the arguments and suggests that a more robust representation of class stratification in the ancient world demonstrates the implausi- bility of such a scenario.
