FOL University returns with Fitzgerald and the Jazz Age, and the evolving English language FOL University, the Friends of the Library’s lecture series, returns on Sunday, November 5 at 1:30 p.m. with two renowned scholars. Dr. Charles A. Riley II, newly-named director of the Nassau County Museum of Art, will lecture on Fitzgerald and the Jazz Age, and bestselling author, linguist and Columbia University professor Dr. John McWhorter will speak on his most recent book, Words on the Move: Why English Won’t—and Can’t—Sit Still. Fitzgerald and the Jazz Age At 1:30 p.m., Dr. Riley will share stories of the wild times and masterpieces of a tightly-connected group of Jazz Age geniuses (Picasso, Leger, Le Corbusier, Chanel, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Joyce, Gershwin and Porter, to name a few). He will pay special attention to F. Scott Fitzgerald, and how he created his masterpiece The Great Gatsby. Dr. Riley is the author of two books on the Jazz Age, the newly published Free as Gods: How the Jazz Age Reinvented Modernism and The Jazz Age in France. In addition to his leadership at the Nassau County Museum of Art, he is an art critic, curator and a professor at Clarkson University.
