In 2008, LSHA contracted out to seven or eight local phsyicians who provide primary care for LSHA patients who would oth- erwise go to the emergency room when sick, executive director of Berry LSHA Jack Berry said. Each doctor is paid $50 per patient visit, slightly above what Medicaid pays, while one visit to the emergency room costs LSHA $2,000. Doing this is what allowed LSHA to lower its millage rate, Berry said.
