It is the capital city of Zhejiang Province (one of the richest and most vigorous provinces in China) and the central metropolis of the south wing of the Yangtze River Delta. As one of the most beautiful cities in China, Hangzhou is renowned internationally for its scenery. It is one of China’s seven ancient capitals, a city of history and culture. Hangzhou has maintained a high annual GDP growth rate over the past 20-odd years. It is among the most economically competitive cities in Mainland China and reputed to be one of the most vigorous and richest areas in the Yangtze River Delta. Hangzhou has a very good commercial environment, where the private sector economy develops very well. Among the top 500 private companies of China, 50 are based in Hangzhou. For several consecutive years, Hangzhou has the most top 500 private companies. Among the top 500 companies of China, 24 are in Hangzhou. 121 Fortune 500 companies have invested in Hangzhou. 1 In June 2011 and June 2014, the West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou and the Grand Canal were inscribed on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. West Lake embodies the very essence of classical Eastern aesthetics, while the Hangzhou Section of the Grand Canal has witnessed 2,500 years of history. This well-preserved section of the canal remains a bustling transportation artery to this day. Hangzhou boasts two national-level scenery zones, several national forest parks and many national key cultural relic reservation sites. In 2018, the total number of outbound tourists to visit Hangzhou was over 4.2 million and number of inbound tourists was around 180 million. LEADING INDUSTRIES Key industries in Hangzhou are e-commerce, ICT, big data, internet of things, AI, bio-pharmaceutical, advanced equipment manufacturing, culture and creation, financial services, tourism and leisure, textiles and apparel, food and beverage processing, energy saving, and new energy. These industries are viewed as being highly competitive in Chinese and even the world’s economy. Many have reveled in the wonders of this text. It has inspired countless numbers of East Asians, especially in China, Japan and Korea, where Chan inspired traditions – Chan, Zen, and Son – have taken root and flourished for many centuries. Indeed, the influence has been so profound and pervasive it is hard to imagine Japanese and Korean cultures without it. In the twentieth century, Western audiences also became enthralled with stories of illustrious Zen masters, many of which are rooted in the Jingde chuandeng lu. I remember meeting Alan Ginsburg, intrepid Beat poet and inveterate Buddhist aspirant, in Shanghai in 1985. He had been invited as part of a literary cultural exchange between China and the U. S., to perform a series of lectures for students at Fudan University, where I was a visiting student. Eager to meet people who he could discuss Chinese Buddhism with, I found myself ushered into his company to converse on the subject.

In recent years there has been growing occurrence of ‘formatted entertainment models’ in China. With this in mind, this thesis explores the ways in which traditional cultural resources are being converted to generate diverse, hybrid commodities. The unique business model of Zhang Yimou, known as the Impression Series provides the case study. The thesis examines multilayered representations of products which continuously form, and are formatted, under the logic of the cultural market. The case study highlights the revival of traditional Chinese culture, a new branding of the Chinese national image and rising ‘soft power’. Primarily, the thesis argues that personal celebrity endorsement is replacing political propaganda heroes in promoting an alternative image of China. Zhang Yimou and Impression West Lake function as a dual branding mechanism that combines ‘people marketing’ and ‘place marketing’ for the development of a ‘created in China’ cultural commodity as well as for the generation of positive economic outcomes.

Wang Photographer's Statement Landslide, avalanche, and earthquake are among the metaphors often . used to characterize a historical change, particularly a revolution. In the 1911 Republican Revolution, for instance, one sees "tokens of the elements of volcanic eruption and confidently looks for seismic manifesta­ tions 10,000 miles away" (Dillon 1911: 874). The relevance of such rhetori­ cal flights may in tact extend beyond mere figures of speech. Replacing imperial rule with a republican government, the 1911 Revolution not only dramatically changed the Chinese political landscape (Price 1990: 223-260; Schrecker 1991: 128- 135), it also drastically transformed the physical land­ scape and people's perceptions of it. Two historical photo albums on the landscape of West Lake at Hangzhou, both published by the Shanghai Commercial Press, bear some eloquent testimony to this fact.     INTERPRETAION OF THE LATEST DEVELOPMENT PATTERN OF TRANSFORMATION FROM ‘TOWN’ INTO ‘SMALL CITY’ IN CHINA A case study based on 27 pilot towns in Zhejiang Province Wang Siyi Department of Architecture, College of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China Director: Prof. Xu Lei Mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT In the process of urbanization in China, the biggest challenge is how to transform the ‘town’ into the ‘city’. It is also a vital link in urbanization. The Chinese government put forward the strategy which aims on speeding up the urbanization development in November 2013. Meanwhile, China has selected some pilot towns, which are intended to become cities in the end, for tentative transformation. Zhejiang Province, which ranks top among the country in economic strength, amount of village and development level and quantity, has become an important national pilot carrier. So far there are 27 pilot towns. By analyzing the development situation of 27 pilot towns, this paper analyzes this particular phenomenon of urbanization and summarize its characteristics. It has walked in the forefront of China for a long time. It is also a region of China city in the ancient times. As early as in the Southern Song Dynasty period, Zhejiang Province has become the most developed areas for towns and villages. The quantity, scale, or tending to the pattern of urban distribution network of towns and villages in Zhejiang were at the highest level.
