Foka str., Rethymno , Greece E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT: To date, research on work in the mines in Greece has ignored the signifi- cance of gender in the workplace, since mining is associated exclusively with male labour. As such, it is considered, indirectly, not subject to gender relations. The article examines the influence of family and gender relations on labour in the Greek mines in the period – by highlighting migration trajectories, paternalistic practices, and the division of labour in mining communities. Sources include: official publications of the Mines Inspectorate and the Mines and Industrial Censuses, the Greek Miners’ Fund Archive, British and French consular reports, various economic and technical reports by experts, literature and narratives, the local press from mining regions, and the Archive of the Seriphos Mines. SKARPELIS' ABSTRACT The paper aims to provide a sound account of the type of Miocene mineralisations in the Cycladic - Pelagonian belt and their relationship with the geodynamic evolution of the area. Skarn and manto types, epithermal pre­ cious and base metals mineralisation, and vein magnesite in ultramafics are associated to distinct stages of the geodynamic evolution of the belt. Extensional tectonics favoured their generation. Late stages of extensional tectonics resulted in the formation of vertical to subvertical NW-SE trending fault zones, which were then used as conduits for ascending hydrothermal fluids. The relationship between the geodynamics and the metallogenetic evolution of the belt is discussed on the basis of available data on the geology of four critical areas: Tinos and Mykonos islands, Laurium and Northern Euboea.

The main objective of the visit was to inspect and document the flooded chambers. An unexpected discovery On a beautiful Sunday morning, a few friends and I visited the famous silver mines of Attica in the municipality of Lavreotiki. Driving nearly 50km from Athens to Lavrion on the southeastern coast of Attica, we went to visit a cen- tral mining complex called Hilarion. My friends, who were also dry cavers, told me about the fifth level of this mine, which was filled with water. Water inside a mine?
