Dattatreya Jayanti Festival in Mysore Ashrama Internetbookshop: www.dyc.ch Kambhoji, Agastya, Vasudeva 2 3 Editorial Dear Datta Devotees, On Saturday, July 24th 2010, some hundred thousand people came – no, not to Sri Swamiji‘s GURU JYOTI RAGA SAGARA concert in Geseke, as I sometimes imagine – but to Duisburg, about 100 km away from Geseke. There the «Love Parade» takes place, which this year is also one of the biggest events of «RUHR 2010» presenting the Ruhr region, at whose east border Geseke is located, as Europe’s cultural metropole. Few hours before Sri Swamiji‘s concert, the mass event ends in a catastrophy: 21 people died, over 500 were injured. Is it mere accident that Sri Swamiji just few days earlier, on Tuesday evening during the bhajan session, talked about the great pilgrimages in India, where millions of people gather at the sacred places, like during KUMBHA- MELA? Or in PANDARAPURA, a pilgrimage center of the VISHNU incarnation VITTHALA. «I like very much this place», Sri Swamiji said. «But it is very crowded. One cannot imagine. So many people! Millions of people! How they control, we don’t know. But no accident. Who controls this crowd? It looks very dangerous that crowd. They have policemen and volunteers, but not sufficient. Who controls? Lord Siva himself controls.» One may assume that Sri Swamiji alleviated the tragedy in Duisburg. How little we know about the acting of Divine in our world. But for moments we can experience, sense and feel, that His protection is at work, that His grace accompanies us. What greater solace can there be in these turbulent times of transformation? «VITTHALA», Sri Swamiji said after the ecstatic dancing to the VITTHALA Bhajan JAYA RAGHUNANDANA, «means: Everything I give to you. Please give me knowledge, that’s all I ask You for.» ATMARPANA – so He named this Swami Manasa Datta surrendering everything to the Divine – and that is what we can do and what we have to do. in Switzerland JAYA GURU DATTA OM NAMO HANUMATE NAMAHA It is our great joy to announce Swami Manasa For the Datta Mala editorial staff Dattas visit to Switzerland in summer 2011. • Shri Guru Charitra
Gurur Brahma, Gurur Vishnu, Gurur Devo Maheshwara Guru Sakshat Parabrahmah Tasmai Shree Guru Veh Namah Shri Guru Charitra Introduction 'Shri Guru Charitra' is the life of 'Shri Guru Dattatreya' (an incarnation of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara). It was originally written in Ovi form (a Marathi Metre) in Marathi by Shri Saraswati Gangadhar, whose ancestor Sayamdev had personally lived and served with devotion, Guru Narasimha Saraswati, an incarnation of Shri Dattatreya about 600 years ago. It was later translated into Sanskrit by Shri Vasudevananda Saraswati (Tembye Swamy), who is regarded by many as an incarnation of Shri Dattatreya and who lived about a hundred years ago. It has been later translated into several other languages. This volume is regarded as Divine; capable of blessing one and all who read it with respect and is placed with images of Gods and adored in almost all devotees' houses of Maharashtra. It is much respected and is very popular like Vedas, Ramayan, Mahabharat, Bhagawat and other Puranas in Sanskrit and Dnyaneshwari, Dasbodh, Ekanathi Bhagawat etc. in Marathi. In the last century, it has spread its influence far and wide and legion are the experiences got by those devotees who read it regularly with respect. Shri Dattatreya had taken birth at the Ashram of Atri and Anasuya in very very old times (Krita Yug) and it is believed that his two incarnations namely Shripada Shri Vallabha and Shri Narasimha Saraswati had taken place in the Deccan in about the 14th and 15th Century (A.D.) respectively. Shri Manikya Prabhu, Shri Akkalkot Maharaj, Shri Sai Baba of Shirdi and Shri Vasudevananda Saraswati are some of the great Saints who are considered as the Avatars (incarnations) or Amsas (taking a part of His powers) of Shri Dattatreya.

  • Baghawad Geeta, Class 141: Chapter 11, Verses 1 to 3
Baghawad Geeta, Class 141: Chapter 11, Verses 1 to 3 Continuing his teaching, Swamiji said, having completed chapter 10 known as Vibhuti Yoga, now we are entering Chapter 11 known as Vishwarupa darshana yoga. The word yoga attached to each chapter refers to the episode or the topic. So vishvarupa darshana yoga means the episode, which deals with vishvarupa darshanam. It means Vision of God as Vishwa rupa. What is Vishwa rupa? Rupa means form and Vishwa means world, or Lord whose form is the very universe itself. Then the question comes up, how to get such a vishwa rupa darshanam? When a devotee wants to see God such as Rama, Krishna or Devi, scriptures tell us how to get that darshanam.Scriptures prescribe tapas or meditation or concentration. The devotee decides which form he wants to see. Then he concentrates on that form as per dhyana shloka. He has to learn the dhyana shloka to be able to concentrate on that form. He has to visualize that particular form and generally a mantra is also taught, just as narada taught mantra to Dhruva, Prahlada etc. and the devotee has to do the Purascharanam of that mantra; Purascharanam means you find out how many letters are there in that mantra; say if there are six letters, you multiply it with as many lakhs; say if it is Gayathri mantra with 24 letters then japa is performed either for 24 lakhs times or 24 crore times. So you do dhyanam; you do Purascharanam, as described in the scriptures; and if a person follows this kind of tapas, the shastras prescribe that the devotee will have the darshanam of the Lord in that particular form.

  • The Bhagavad Gita's Influence on Yoga
BHAGAVADGITA PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Sir Edwin Arnold | 112 pages | 01 Feb 1994 | Dover Publications Inc. | 9780486277820 | English | New York, United States What Is the Bhagavad Gita? | The Bhagavad Gita’s Influence on Yoga - Yoga Journal The timeless message of the Bhagavad Gita does not refer only to one historical battle, but to the cosmic conflict between good and evil: life as a series of battles between Spirit and matter, soul and body, life and death, knowledge and ignorance, health and disease, changelessness and transitoriness, self-control and temptations, discrimination and the blind sense-mind The devotee should analyze his daily mental and physical actions to determine just how much of his life is ruled by the ego's ignorance delusion and body consciousness, and how much he is able to express of the soul's wisdom and divine nature. Yoga meditation is the process of cultivating and stabilizing the awareness of one's real nature, through definite spiritual and psychophysical methods and laws by which the narrow ego, the flawed hereditary human consciousness, is displaced by the consciousness of the soul. Each person has to fight his own battle of Kurukshetra. It is a war not only worth winning, but in the divine order of the universe and of the eternal relationship between the soul and God, a war that sooner or later must be won. In the holy Bhagavad Gita, the quickest attainment of that victory is assured to the devotee who, through undiscourageable practice of the divine science of yoga meditation, learns like Arjuna to hearken to the inner wisdom-song of Spirit.

  • Puranas and Incarnations
Chapter 32. Puranas and Incarnations hen Parikshith heard Suka’s consoling and satisfying words, he queried, “Master! what are the Puranas? WWhat are their contents? How many are there?” Suka replied, “The texts that elaborate the terse truths that are enshrined in the Vedas are called Puranas. They are numberless in extent. But at present, 18 of them are outstandingly famous. These were collated and edited by my father, Vyasa. They have ten common characteristics. The supplements to these Puranas, called Upapuranas, have only five. The ten marks of the Puranas “You may ask what those ten are. I’ll tell you even before you ask! They are: creation, proliferation into manifold varieties of created beings, setting of boundaries, protection, consequences of one’s actions, the ages of Manu, the glories of the Lord, absorption, freedom, and the support of the universe (sarga, visarga, sthana, poshana, uthi, manvanthara, Isanukatha, nirodha, mukthi, and asraya). The support (asraya) is the most impor- tant of these ten.” “It would be hard to describe these ten characteristics of the Puranas in a few words, for each has to be indi- cated clearly, just as a description of the processes of butter making has to touch upon each item from the milking to the churning. Each step is important. The ten names relate to the attributes as marked out by their meanings. But the purpose of all is the gaining of the ‘butter’, liberation. It is for the attainment of that liberation that the ten characteristics are assumed. The Puranas are all designed to confer on the eager and earnest listener the support and sustenance necessary for the pilgrim to proceed to liberation.
