Soccer History Issue 18 THE FRENCH MENACE; THE MIGRATION OF BRITISH PLAYERS TO FRANCE IN THE 1930S In the spring of 1932 the pages of the national and sporting press in England informed readers that domestic football was under threat from the ‘French Menace’. This comprised a well-publicised, but rather futile, attempt to attract two of Chelsea’s star players, Tommy Law and Hugh Gallacher, to play in the newly formed French professional league, effectively tearing up their English contracts in return for a reportedly large sum of money. The French Menace followed the ‘American Menace’ and the ‘Irish Menace’, occasions when British players had been induced to break their contracts and migrate to play in the American Soccer and Irish Free State Leagues. The potential migration of players was a menace because in each case, initially at least, there was a threat to the fundamental structures that enabled clubs to control their players: the retain-and-transfer system and (in England) the maximum wage. The British associations were passing through an isolationist phase and had left FIFA, hence agreements on player transfers only held on transactions between the Home Countries. A player moving to a club in another association could do so, in theory, without hindrance and without the payment of a transfer fee. In practice, as each ‘menace’ arose the FA was forced to reach agreements with local bodies to ensure that players could be held to their contract. Football in France was nominally amateur prior to 1932, but this concealed the advent of a form of professionalism that had gathered pace in the years after the First World War. -

PREFACE The Blackwall frigates form a connecting link between the lordly East Indiaman of the Honourable John Company and the magnificent P. & O. and Orient liners of the present day. They were first-class ships—well-run, happy ships, and the sailor who started his sea life as a midshipman aboard a Blackwaller looked back ever afterwards to his cadet days as the happiest period of his career. If discipline was strict, it was also just. The train- ing was superb, as witness the number of Blackwall midshipmen who reached the head of their profession and distinguished themselves later in other walks of life. Indeed, as a nursery for British seamen, we shall never see the like of these gallant little frigates. The East still calls, yet its glamour was twice as alluring, its vista twice as romantic, in the days of sail; and happy indeed was the boy who first saw the shores of India from the deck of one of Green's or Smith's passenger ships. Fifty years ago, the lithographs of the celebrated Blackwall liners to India and Australia could be bought at any seaport for a few shillings. -

They have been the setting for a range of maritime activities and events going back to ancient times which also reflects the growing importance of various ports along the Kentish coastline, such as the Cinque Ports. The Channel has seen the arrival of invasion fleets and raiding vessels going back to the Roman period, and has been the scene of a number of naval conflicts. It has often acted as a frontline defence during times of warfare, and then in times of peace is an important trading route for both visiting vessels and those on route to other national and international ports. It is therefore unsurprising that a number of vessels have been lost to the sea over the years and now comprise a valuable collection of wrecks off the coast of the district. -

Kent Archaeological Reports online EXCAVATIONS OF BRONZE AGE, ROMAN AND MEDIEVAL SETTLEMENT ON LAND AT WINGFIELD BANK, NORTHFLEET, KENT 2008 By Kate Wheaton, Alan Hardy, and Andrew Norton Summary In April and May 2008 Oxford Archaeology (OA) undertook a programme of fieldwork at Wingfield Bank, Northfleet, Kent, in advance of development by, and on behalf of Chinacorp Seven Plc. Five phases of activity were identified. Flint scatters denoted a Mesolithic/Neolithic presence, but the first indications of settlement were identified in a late Bronze Age ditch. No significant Iron Age occupation was found, although a gold stater was recovered from the silting of a natural hollow on the site and a hearth or oven base was dated to the late Iron Age. Early Roman settlement was represented by field ditches and two possible grain stores. The settlement will have been associated with the closely adjacent religious complex at Springhead. It was abandoned by the early fourth century, and there was no further occupation until the twelfth century. Field boundaries, waterholes and fences relating to the documented settlement of Wenifalle were found, and correlated with the settlement layout found in the 1999 excavation to the south. The site was abandoned by the late fourteenth century, and apart from a single sixteenth-century field ditch, remained deserted until the twentieth century. Introduction Project background In April and May 2008 Oxford Archaeology (OA) carried out programme of strip, map and sample excavation on land at Wingfield Bank, Northfleet, Gravesend, Kent (NGR TQ 6222 7257) in advance of development, on behalf of Chinacorp Seven Plc and in respect of a brief prepared by Archaeologist Ben Found, of Kent County Council. -

The Road Between Dartford, Gravesend and Strood
Archaeologia Cantiana Vol. 83 1968 THE ROAD BETWEEN DARTFORD, GRAVESEND AND STROOD By R. H. HISOOOK, LL.B. FROM the Roman era and possibly earlier the main road from London to Dover has followed approximately the line of what was later known as Watling Street. In the medieval period one major deviation from the Watling Street occurred between Dartford and Strood where the road was diverted through the town of Gravesend and Watling Street became a by-road and footpath until the arterial road, now the A2 or M2, was opened in 1924. This article deals with the road between Dartford and Strood and the various Turnpike Acts under which it was maintained during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. THE VABIATIONS IN THE COTJBSE OF THE ROAB This was governed by two geographical features. First the Ebbsfleet which in Roman times seems to have been navigable as far as Springhead where the important settlement of Vagniacae grew up. This was the natural point for the road to make for between the Medway crossing at Rochester and the Darenth crossing at Dartford, as any line further north would have had to make a diversion to the south to cross the Ebbsfleet here. Secondly, the origin of the town of Gravesend as the eastern terminus of the Long Ferry on the Thames from London, which was in existence prior to 1293, from the evidence of a lawsuit in that year. This caused travellers from the Continent and East Kent to make for Gravesend. At about the same period the Ebbsfleet seems to have silted up and a bridge or causeway across it was built near its junction with the Thames at Stonebridge, Northfleet, enabling travellers to continue direct from Gravesend to rejoin Watling Street at Brent, Dartford. -
