  • GLASGOW WEST END U3A January 2021 Newsletter
GLASGOW WEST END U3A January 2021 Newsletter Dear All Happy New Year to you all. 2021 has got off to a shaky start but hopefully it will improve. We just want a vaccine… The weather has been lovely though a bit treacherous underfoot in places. The hospital grounds at Gartnavel Royal have been well-gritted and are ideal for a sunny winter walk. Bingham’s Pond provided much entertainment for children when most of it was frozen. Bit too much excitement for me, I prefer to be on firmer ground. GWEU3A continues to be busy on Zoom/Facebook/WhatsApp. We had a lovely Christmas Event by Fool’s Gold in December which all enjoyed. The David Hume Institute Focus Group on what we found important to happiness during lockdown, leading on to Equality and Fairness, proved very popular and stimulating. A number of you walked for Shelter with a pal in December which was worthwhile exercise. Coffee and Chat continues to be popular and a good way to meet members. The small groups are continuing very well with a new French group starting up. Edith Fleming is getting musicians together to play and listen to classical music. If you wish to join them please indicate through the website in the usual way. After the Focus Group a number of people expressed an interest in being part of a Current Affairs Group. This would require members to be unbiased politically, and would require a structure and format a bit like the Focus group. If you are interested in further discussion about such a group please email me at [email protected] and I will try to facilitate it.

  • (Mount Florida) (Traffic Regulation) Order 201 Report
The Glasgow City Council (Mount Florida) (Traffic Regulation) Order 201_ Report The Mount Florida area has been identified as being negatively affected by the current parking and loading arrangements. Glasgow City Council has been working closely with the local community council to improve the existing parking restrictions in the area. The specific objective was to assist the local community by reducing the parking restrictions on Cathcart Road and to facilitate business activities allowing all vehicle types to utilize the designated loading areas. In addition to the above, the Council are taking the opportunity to improve parking practices and road safety within the adjoining residential areas. This includes ensuring crossing points are accessible, sightlines at junctions are sufficient and generally parking practices are safe and not obstructive. Each element of the proposals is detailed below:- No waiting at any time, no loading or unloading at any time These restrictions are proposed at locations where waiting and loading is deemed unsafe in terms of road safety or pedestrian safety or could negatively affect traffic flow or manoeuvres. No waiting at any time, no loading or unloading at any time, except taxis This restriction relates to the existing taxi rank on Carmunnock Road, north of Letherby Drive. The legislation which covers this taxi rank is covered within an older traffic regulation order therefore it has been consolidated into these proposals, however, there will be no changes to the restrictions of this taxi rank. No waiting at any time These restrictions are proposed where waiting is deemed undesirable in terms of road safety or pedestrian safety, however loading or unloading could occur at these locations by any class of vehicle.

MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT RAILWAY ACCIDENTS REPORT ON THE COLLISION which occurred on z 1st April 195I between Pollokshields East and Queen's Park in the SCOTTISH REGION BRITISH RAILWAYS LONDON : HIS MAJESTY'S STATIONERY OFFICE 1952 NINEPENCE NET SCOTTISH REGION BRITISH RAILWAYS M~NISTRYOF TRANSPORT, Berkeley Square House, London, W. 1. 19rh October, 1951. SIR, I have the honour to report for the information of the Minister of Transport, in accordance with the Order dated 23rd April, 1951, the result of my Inquiry into the collision between two passenger trains which occurred at 1.38 p.m. on Saturday, 21st April, 1951, between Pollokshields East and Queen's Park in the Scottish Region. The two trains were the 1.24 pm. Glasgow (Central) to Mount Florida, Football Special Train No. 68, and the 1.27 pm. Glasgow (Central) to Kirkhill, Train No. 69. Both were carrying a full complement of passengers. After passing through Pollokshields East, No. 68 was stopped in section on account of loss of vacuum in the brake pipe ; No. 69, followmg three minutes later, was erroneously allowed into the same section, and collided with the rear of it at a speed of about 20 miles per hour. The impact was severe, and the four rearmost compartments of the last coach of No. 68 were destroyed. I regret to report that 3 passengers lost their lives, 74 were taken to hospital, including 18 who were detained, and 66 others received minor injuries. Rescue work was somewhat hampered by the site of the accident, which was in a cutting between high retaining walls, where access was difficult, but First Aid was given to the injured by passengers and Railway staff, using the equipmenifrom the Guard's vans on the trains, and ambulances were called without delay.

  • Simd Analysis: Future Projections
SIMD ANALYSIS: FUTURE PROJECTIONS 1. Background and Introduction 1.1. This paper analyses the reasons behind the recent decline of deprivation in Glasgow, projects these trends towards 2015, and comments on their likely implications. It is based on a presentation made to the Community Planning Executive Group on 2nd June 2010, which itself came from a series of events held in autumn 2009/spring 2010, involving over 120 people from council and non- council organisations in Glasgow. 1.2. The gains Glasgow made in reducing its share of Scotland’s deprivation have been the result of long-term trends that have been operating over the last two or more decades. Identifying both the trends that led to the current situation, and those currently in operation which can reasonably be presented as being influential in Glasgow towards 2015, form the basis of the projections in this paper. The main indicator used has been the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD), and the analysis of three waves (2004, 2006 and 2009) has been supported by the use of other indicators. Looking at the absence of deprivation as well as at areas defined by deprivation includes all communities and gives a rounded analysis of the city. 1.3. The trends that have shaped the city at present are long-term and have been in operation since the 1990s, if not earlier. It follows that trends that can be identified in the present day will be those that influence the city by 2015. Their general direction has been to accelerate Glasgow’s development to its current position as a representative medium-sized western European city.

The Govanhill Gazette Volume 1, Issue 1 Spring 2015 Free It’s a rubbish situation - so what do we do about it? Pioneering study aims to discover the truth behind an issue that’s blighting a community t South Seeds, we’ve been wondering why there is so much fly-tipping in Govanhill, especially down the back lanes. ASo we were very excited when Zero Waste Scotland gave us some money to find out, writes Sue Reid Sexton. We decided to do this by looking at one block with a lane, the one we know best, where we built a community garden (see the back page). Over the growing season we had seen rubbish lying around for weeks near the community garden. We wanted to check out how rubbish gets there and how it leaves and what are the factors which influence this. Obviously the best thing to do was to ask everyone involved what they thought, and in January 2015 that’s exactly what we did. The block is bounded by Victoria Road, Dixon Avenue, Westmoreland Street and Allison Street, On Allison Street there are low buildings housing businesses and through a locked gate you can see the Dixon Avenue. Then we checked the size and layout of experiences of the lane, about what they lane. The rest of the block is made up of We spoke to 60 residents and the bins and took note of doors and gates understood about waste collection in this tenements, all of which are three storeys shopkeepers, and interviewed people that didn’t work because these are the area, what they thought of the lane and high.
