Rhymney Valley 1973-1991 Rhymney Valley Welsh District Council Elections Results 1973-1991 Colin Rallings and Michael Thrasher The Elections Centre Plymouth University The information contained in this report has been obtained from a number of sources. Election results from the immediate post-reorganisation period were painstakingly collected by Alan Willis largely, although not exclusively, from local newspaper reports. From the mid- 1980s onwards the results have been obtained from each local authority by the Elections Centre. The data are stored in a database designed by Lawrence Ware and maintained by Brian Cheal and others at Plymouth University. Despite our best efforts some information remains elusive whilst we accept that some errors are likely to remain. Notice of any mistakes should be sent to [email protected]. The results sequence can be kept up to date by purchasing copies of the annual Local Elections Handbook, details of which can be obtained by contacting the email address above. Front cover: the graph shows the distribution of percentage vote shares over the period covered by the results. The lines reflect the colours traditionally used by the three main parties. The grey line is the share obtained by Independent candidates while the purple line groups together the vote shares for all other parties. Rear cover: the top graph shows the percentage share of council seats for the main parties as well as those won by Independents and other parties. The lines take account of any by- election changes (but not those resulting from elected councillors switching party allegiance) as well as the transfers of seats during the main round of local election. The lower graph shows for each main round of local elections the overall percentage turnout (solid line), the percentage of women candidates standing at (dotted line) and the percentage of women among those elected (hashed line). • STRIDE out for 32 Miles Along the Rhymney Riverside Walk
STRIDE OUT for 32 miles along the Rhymney Riverside Walk. The Rhymney Riverside Walk is a 32 mile linear walk which winds along the floor of the Rhymney Valley, following the river from its headwaters to the southern plains. There are many bus and train stops along the route – so it need not be walked in a single outing. The walk forms part of the Valleys Regional Park, a network of visitor facilities and accessible countryside activity routes across the Valleys. For further information on walking routes and other activities which you can enjoy, please visit www.thevalleys.co.uk . The Valleys Regional Park is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government. Rhymney Riverside Walk. The Rhymney Riverside Walk follows footpaths and cycleways, with some sections along the roadside in urban areas. The paths are mainly dry but can get wet and boggy in places after periods of wet weather – stout footwear is recommended. There are plenty of pubs and shops close to the route, but it’s advisable to take food and drink. The use of sustainable public transport is encouraged – please check times of services beforehand. The directions in this document assume you are walking the route from north to south. Mobile phone coverage is generally good but reception can be poor in valley bottoms. Take your camera and binoculars and please follow the countryside code as you, ‘leave nothing but footprints; take nothing but memories.’ Ordnance Survey Explorer maps 151 and 166 cover the route. Maps in this document are reproduced from the Ordnance Survey mapping with the permission of the Controller of Her Majesty’s Stationery Office.

  • A Postcolonial View of Opencast Coal Mining in the South Wales Valleys
CRITICAL PLANNING 2017 31 NOT EVER AGAIN: A POSTCOLONIAL VIEW OF OPENCAST COAL MINING IN THE SOUTH WALES VALLEYS Kelvin Mason Independent Researcher Paul Milbourne Cardiff University Coal and Injustice in the South Wales Valleys UK Dependence on Coal Despite its commitments to carbon reduction, in 2012 the United Kingdom (UK) depended on coal for some 30% of electricity production; that per- centage rose to more than 40% in periods of peak demand in winter (DECC, 2012). European Consumer Centre statistics for 2015 reveal that coal continued to provide more than 20% of UK electricity. In terms of the greenhouse effect, coal is the worst choice of fuel, producing around 910 g of carbon dioxide (CO2) per kilowatt hour, compared with 500 g for gas and no emissions for nuclear energy and renewables (EIA, 2013, figures for steam-electric generation). Nevertheless, the Westminster Parliament’s Welsh Affairs Committee has reported a new industry enthusiasm for coal, noting the substantial reserves in South Wales, a significant proportion of which are suitable for opencast mining (Select Committee on Welsh Affairs, 2007). 32 Mason and Milbourne Not Ever Again Opencast Coal Mining in the South Wales Valleys Although world coal prices have fallen since they peaked in 2007 and 2008, the first decade of this century saw a fresh surge in the authorisation of new opencast coal mines (strip mines) in the UK, most controversially Ffos-y-Frân near Merthyr Tydfil in Wales (Monbiot, 2007). Ffos-y-Frân is expected to have produced nearly 11 million tonnes of coal between 2007 and 2025.
