Zij vonden ook dat katholieken te weinig boeken lazen. Aan de oprichting van Idil prof. dr. Arnoud-Jan Bijsterveld, hoofdredacteur lagen dus idealistische, pragmatische en emancipatorische dr. Kitty de Leeuw, redactiesecretaris motieven ten grondslag. dr. Ton Thelen De idealist Gerard Verbiest voelde het als een apostolische missie: de emancipatie en bescherming van de katholieke lezer door middel van ‘voorlichting’ over het goede boek. Tegenstan- Redactieraad ders van deze visie – die vanaf de jaren vijftig luidkeels van prof. dr. Jan Bank zich lieten horen – noemden de voorlichtingspraktijken van prof. dr. Helma Houtman-De Smedt Idil echter regelrechte censuur. Zij trokken ten strijde tegen prof. dr. Jos Koldeweij de betutteling. Kortom, er waren ‘helpers’ en ‘tegenstanders’ van Idil, wat laat zien dat niet alle rooms-katholieke neuzen prof. dr. Wiel Kusters dezelfde kant op wezen. ‘ Moralinezuur’ prof. dr. Peter Nissen Met deze dissertatie levert Cecile van Eijden-Andriessen een prof. dr. Maarten Prak interessante bijdrage aan het historisch debat over het Neder- lands katholicisme in de periode 1937-1970. Zij plaatst Idil in en voorlichting prof. dr. Walter Prevenier het bredere kader van het spanningsveld tussen katholieke prof. dr. Peter Rietbergen normativiteit en de ‘strijd om de moderniteit’ in het tijdperk van prof. dr. Karel Veraghtert verzuiling en beginnende ontzuiling. Daarnaast geeft zij een De twee gezichten van Idil prof. dr. Louis Vos analyse van het Nederlandse katholieke literaire veld in die tijd. Idil beoordeelde lectuur op de katholieke moraal, bracht classifi caties aan om de moraal en kwaliteit van literaire teksten in het katholieke debat www.uitgeverij-zhc.nl voor de lezer te garanderen en onderhield nauwe relaties met om de moderniteit katholieke uitgeverijen, boekhandelaren, bibliotheken en het onderwijsveld. De recensiedienst fungeerde dus als een spin in 1937-1970 het web. Van Eijden presenteert ook enkele literaire casussen rondom romans van belangrijke Nederlandse auteurs, zoals Anna Blaman, Willem Frederik Hermans, Gerard Reve, Gerard Cecile van Eijden-Andriessen Walschap, Simon Vestdijk en Hella Haasse. Hierin laat zij zien welke maatstaven door Idil werden aangelegd en hoe die in de loop der tijd verschoven. Witczak, S.L.D. This dissertation examines the use of relics in the Ordo dedicationis ecclesiae et altaris in light of the Second Vatican Council’s liturgical theology. The dissertation utilizes the method described by Kevin Irwin in Context and Text. The dissertation begins with a historical study of the extant rites of dedication of a church. It studies how the rite of dedication developed and how relics became a required element of the ritual, including the translation, vigil and deposition of relics. The work looks at the meanings associated with relics as well as the perceived relationship between relics and the altar. Beginning with the Medieval period, relics were understood to be necessary for dedication, with the celebration of Mass a festive completion of the rite. Rites of dedication include the deposition of relics as a central ritual moment from the fourth century through the middle of the twentieth century. Through historical study, the use of Conciliar documents, and the examination of the role of relics in the schemata of the Consilium, this dissertation presents an analysis of the shifts in the understanding regarding the dedication of a church.

Monteiro, Chair of Dutch Catholicism, Radboud University, Nijmegen Introduction Research projects in the US on the sexual abuse of minors by members of the Roman Catholic clergy have focused on the role played by psychiatrists and psychologists in the approach and response of the Roman Catholic governing bodies to this problem. Usually, the responsible authority enlisted the aid of clerics who had experience of caring for priests and members of religious orders who had perpetrated such abuse.2 The US studies showed that the treatment these people received from psychiatrists and psychologists was part and parcel of a ‘closed culture’ in which it was known in the 1950s and 1960s that members of the Roman Catholic clergy were sexually abusing minors. This culture was characterized by ‘institutionalized secrecy’, which encompassed both ecclesiastical circles and treatment 3 providers outside the immediate church hierarchy. In the United States in the 1950s and 1960s this closed culture was closely entwined with efforts by priests and members of religious orders to gain treatment programmes for fellow- clerics with psychological problems and to include a psychological examination in the admission procedures to the priesthood and the respective orders.4 Academically qualified psychiatrists, members of the laity in the eyes of the church, were part of this culture together with similarly academically qualified priests and members of religious orders who specialized in religion and psychiatry.

BOSSCHER Introduction Saevis tranquillus in undis (‘calm amidst the stormy waves’) was the motto of William of Orange, the ‘Father of the Fatherland’, among others. 1 He helped the fledgling ship of state to maintain a steady course during the stormy weather of the Eighty Years’ War in which the Republic of the Netherlands gained its independence. First of all, the wide-ranging debate about the future of democracy and how to deal with the legacy of the Occupation. Who could lay down the law in the Netherlands, what kind of government was best suited to this situation, and what response was appropriate to the question of ‘crime and punishment’ in connection with those who had failed to be true to the Fatherland in its time of need? And then, the problems of national reconstruction demanded hard political choices. It was not only the physical reconstruction that had to be considered here: moral aspects, such as the kind of society to be built up, were important too. It would be wrong to suggest, as many have done, that the social debate in the first twenty years after the War was pale and tame compared with what was to come in the 1960s. It is true that this last-mentioned period did usher in a true cultural revolution that shook all pillars of society on their foundation and in a few cases even caused them to topple.

La diplomazia pontifi cia è la più antica del mondo e ha operato ad majorem Dei gloriam, FEDE EDIPLOMAZIA in conformità a principi immutabili, la diff usione del Cattolicesimo, la difesa e lo sviluppo delle Chiese particolari e la tutela dei fedeli in tutto il mondo, che hanno dovuto però confrontarsi con i FEDE E DIPLOMAZIA diversi sistemi internazionali del momento: dalla Respublica Christiana medievale all’Europa degli Stati sovrani fondata sull’equilibrio di potenza, dall’avvento delle ideologie e dei totalitarismi al confronto LE RELAZIONI INTERNAZIONALI DELLA SANTA SEDE bipolare della Guerra Fredda. I Pontifi cati di Pio XI e Pio XII furono caratterizzati a cura di dallo scontro con regimi espressione di un violento anticlericalismo di stampo massonico, come la Seconda Repubblica spagnola e il Messico, e con i totalitarismi, nazismo e comunismo; quest’ultimo MASSIMO DE LEONARDIS dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale estese il suo dominio a molti Paesi in vari continenti.
