Day 04 After breakfast, departure with the tour leader and the private bus for a guided tour of the most important Roman Basilicas. Meeting with a local guide and visit of St. John Lateran’s Basilica, trait d’union between pagan and Christian eras. Originally born as a building for public meetings and justice administration, it later became a majestic cle- rical structure suitable for receiving a great number of worshippers. Quick stop at the near Scala Sancta. The Scala San- cta are, according to the Christian tradition, the steps that led up to the praetorium of Pontius Pilate in Jeru- salem, which Jesus Christ stood on during his Passion on his way to trial. The stairs were brought to Rome in 326 B.C. Visit of Santa Maria Maggiore Church, the most im- portant among the ones dedicated to the Virgin Mary and undoubtedly the best preserved one. San Giovanni in Laterano It is located at the top of the Esquilino hill and it is the only one that still keeps its early Christian structure, even though it has been renovated a few times. Finally, visit of St. Paul’s Outside the Walls, one of Rome’s four ancient papal basilicas and the biggest af- ter St. Peter’s Basilica. According to the tradition, it was built on the burial place of Saint Paul. The first worshippers built a sepulchral chapel which later became a real Basilica and one of the most impor- tant stops for pilgrims. The present aspect is due to Pasquale Belli who, together with other architects, rebuilt it between 1825 and 1854. Day 05 After breakfast, departure with the tour leader and the private bus to reach the centre of Rome for a guided walking tour. Fontana di Trevi First stop with the bus: Santa Maria in Trastevere Square, one of the most beautiful squares in Rome. It has two different souls: it is quiet during the day -with its 15th century fountain, the 16th century San Cal- listo Palace and the wonderful Basilica of Our Lady in Trastevere- while it is and full of life during the night with tables scattered along the streets and crowds of people sitting on the fountain’s steps. Second stop with the bus: Piazzale Flaminio, from where you will start your walking tour. Il Babuino, Via Ripetta and Via del Corso -the main streets of the historical centre- finally meet each other in Piazza del Popolo. Great example of the Renaissance papal patronage and ancient siege of games, fairs, popular shows and capital punishment, it is one of the most popular squares in the world. The twin-churches of Santa Maria di Montesanto and Santa Maria dei Miracoli, the Flaminio Obelisk (the oldest and the highest in Rome) together with the two fountains made by Valadier give their contribution to the fascinating ambience of the square. Get to see the well-known Piazza di Spagna and the Church of the Santissima Trinità dei Monti. The walking tour will finally lead you to the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and the Basilica of Sant’Andrea della Valle. Return to the hotel by private bus and overnight stay.
