PARALLEL VARIATION IN NORTH AND MIDDLE AMERICAN SCREECH-OWLS JOE T. MARSHALL, JR. My objective in this paper is to provide for the first time a delineation of species of North and Middle American Otus based on acquaintance with their biological traits in the field. Next I wish to show their racial convergence in concealing color patterns. Finally, I attempt to portray the dramatic geographic variation in those evanescent colors and patterns of fresh autumn plumage, in recently collected specimens (largely taken by myself). -

Abstract Marcot, Bruce G. 1995. Owls of old forests of the world. Gen. Tech. Rep. PNW- GTR-343. Portland, OR: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Pacific Northwest Research Station. 64 p. A review of literature on habitat associations of owls of the world revealed that about 83 species of owls among 18 genera are known or suspected to be closely asso- ciated with old forests. Old forest is defined as old-growth or undisturbed forests, typically with dense canopies. The 83 owl species include 70 tropical and 13 tem- perate forms. Specific habitat associations have been studied for only 12 species (7 tropical and 5 temperate), whereas about 71 species (63 tropical and 8 temperate) remain mostly unstudied. Some 26 species (31 percent of all owls known or sus- pected to be associated with old forests in the tropics) are entirely or mostly restricted to tropical islands. Threats to old-forest owls, particularly the island forms, include conversion of old upland forests, use of pesticides, loss of riparian gallery forests, and loss of trees with cavities for nests or roosts. Conservation of old-forest owls should include (1) studies and inventories of habitat associations, particularly for little-studied tropical and insular species; (2) protection of specific, existing temperate and tropical old-forest tracts; and (3) studies to determine if reforestation and vege- tation manipulation can restore or maintain habitat conditions. An appendix describes vocalizations of all species of Strix and the related genus Ciccaba. Haig Abstract: The Larch Mountain salamander (Plethodon larselli Burns, 1954) is an endemic species in the Pacific north- western United States facing threats related to habitat destruction. To facilitate development of conservation strategies, we used DNA sequences and RAPDs (random amplified polymorphic DNA) to examine differences among populations of this species. Phylogenetic analyses of cytochrome b revealed a clade of haplotypes from populations north of the Columbia River derived from a clade containing haplotypes from the river’s southwestern region. -

We conducted a mark-recapture study of salamanders in the crowns of five large redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, California. This represented a first attempt to document the residency and behavior of A. vagrans in a canopy environment. We placed litter bags on 65 fern (Polypodium scouleri) mats, covering 10% of their total surface area in each tree. Also, we set cover boards on one fern mat in each of two trees. We checked cover objects 2–4 times per month during fall and winter seasons. We marked 40 individuals with elastomer tags and recaptured 13. Only one recaptured salamander moved (vertically 7 m) from its original point of capture. We compared habitats associated with salamander captures using correlation analysis and stepwise regression. At the tree-level, the best predictor of salamander abundance was water storage by fern mats. At the fern mat-level, the presence of cover boards accounted for 85% of the variability observed in captures. -

Schlick Wildlife Biologist Prepared by: ____Karen Kenfield__________ Date: ___July 7, 2009____________ Karen Kenfield Fisheries Biologist Introduction Under the National Forest Management Act (NFMA), the Forest Service is directed to “provide for diversity of plant and animal communities based on the suitability and capability of the specific land area in order to meet overall multiple-use objectives.” (P.L. 94-588, Sec 6 (g) (3) (B)). The 1982 regulations implementing NFMA require that “Fish and wildlife habitat shall be managed to maintain viable populations of existing native and desired non-native vertebrate species in the planning area.” (36 CFR 219.19) Management Indicator Species (MIS) is a concept used by the agency to serve as a barometer for species viability at the Forest level. The Six Rivers National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan (LRMP) uses Management Indicator Species (MIS) to assess potential effects of management activities on the various habitats and habitat assemblages with which these species are associated. There are seven habitat assemblages containing 41 fish and wildlife species on the Forest (LRMP IV-97). Detailed descriptions of the Travel Management alternatives are found in the Travel Management Environmental Impact Statement. For the analysis associated with this project, specific MIS were addressed based on their potential to occur within the Travel Management planning. Table 1 lists the MIS and assemblages occurring on the Six Rivers National Forest, and those known or thought to occur within the planning area based on habitat suitability, survey results, or incidental sighting records. -

Species Profile: Eastern Screech-Owl (Or: All you wanted to know about our screech-owls but were afraid to ask) by Jack Eitniear This article first appeared in the February 2006 issue of the San Antonio Audubon Society newsletter. The Eastern Screech-Owl (Megascops asio) occurs through the eastern threequarters of the state. The owl is often the only resident avian predator of suburban woodlots and often will nest in nestboxes. The owl is unusual in that it comes in two distinctive color morphs: rufous and gray. Many people are not aware that screech-owls are monogamous and polygynous, living in groups of similarly-aged birds within a small territory that contains a number of nestsites. Nesting from March until June, the adults feed their 3-4 young on a wide variety of prey items, which facilitates their being adaptable to a variety of wooded habitats near or within towns. I should mention that in west Texas we have the Western Screech-Owl (M. kennicottii), which has a descending call, yellowish bill, and in some individuals, more rufous coloration. Encouraging the breeding of screechowls in your area is often achieved by correctly sized and positioned nest-boxes. According to screech-owl authority, Texan Fred Gehlbach, nest-boxes can be made of any wood at least 2 cm thick. The floor should be 18 x 18 cm with a few (.5 cm) drain holes in the bottom corners. The entrance hole should be 7 cm in diameter and placed 25 cm from the floor. Fred suggests a front sloping lid 5 cm from the entrance hole with 3 cm overhanging and hinged at the back. -
