Date …………………………………………………………………………. 1 | Page RELIGION AND SPIRITUALITY WITHIN THE SIKH RELIGION: HOW COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGISTS CAN HELP Abstract This study investigated the spiritual and religious experience of members of the Sikh community with a focus on how such an experience affects their sense of wellbeing. Consequently, the central aim of this study is to explore how Sikhs use religion and spirituality with coping. This was examined by exploring how Sikhs deal with stressful events and how these impacted on their wellbeing. The thesis was comprised of two parts. Study one comprised of the thematic analysis of questionnaires. 56 UK based Sikh participants (23 males and 33 females; age range 17-62) took part. The findings from study one speculated that the older age group appeared more accepting of their religion and spirituality suggesting maybe they are less occupied by a quest to explore their life through religion and spirituality than the 20-30 year old age group. Consequently, study two looked more closely at participants aged between 20- 30 year olds to further explore their lived experience. In line with the IPA methodology, a small well-defined opportunity sample of six people (4 males and 2 females) in the Sikh faith, who have been practicing their religion for at least 2-3 years and between the ages of 20-30 were invited to participate in the interviews. Four superordinate themes were found which represented an overall story. The themes were namely, religious and spiritual struggles; religion and spirituality assisting with the development of self and identity; spiritual striving and aids to well-being: religious/spiritual coping. It is hoped that findings from this research will help to inform our understanding of how Sikh client’s religious and spiritual beliefs influences their wellbeing as well as incorporating this 2 | Page knowledge into the therapy process to make good clinical judgements. This study will enhance research in counselling psychology with regards to religion and spirituality and mental health specifically with regards to young Sikh’s. All identifiable information has been removed including participant names which have been replaced with pseudonyms. 10 | Page CHAPTER 1: Introduction & Literature Review Counselling psychology operates within a multicultural context requiring that those practicing take steps to increase their multicultural competencies such as the black and ethnic minority groups. According to the Professional Practice Guidelines of the BPS (2005) counselling psychologists are required to “make themselves knowledgeable about the diverse experiences of the clients they work with and challenge the views of people who pathologise on the basis of such aspects as....racial identity and religious and spiritual views (page 7)” as well as to “respect the diversity of beliefs and values held within society...(page 3).” The central aim of this study is to explore how Sikhs use religion and spirituality with coping with stress and its effect on their wellbeing. It is hoped that this study will provide therapists knowledge of Sikh’s and their religious and spiritual views to inform their therapeutic practice. It is important to state that throughout the study Sikhs will be described as an ethnic group as reported in the Census summary report (2017) or “South Asian”. As Sikhs originate from India, Punjab, they form part of the global classification of “South Asian.” These terms will be used interchangeably throughout the thesis. It is unlikely for counselling psychologists to continuously and effectively develop their multicultural competencies if research into religious and spiritual views held by individuals from a range of diverse cultural backgrounds remains scarce. Sikhism was recorded at being 0.8% of the UK population, and is most strongly represented in the West Midlands when compared to the rest of the UK (Census, 2011). It has been reported that this ethnic group has been under 11 | Page researched particularly in relation to counselling (Sandhu, 2004; Morjaria-Keval, 2006). Based on the national mental illness statistics, 1 in 4 people in the UK will suffer at least one diagnosable episode of mental illness (McManus,

After the battle of Anandpur Sahib when the entire family of Guru Gobind Singh was separated, Mata Sahib Kaur accompanied Guru Gobind Singh to Delhi and thereafter to Nanded. When Guru Gobind Singh realized that the time has come when He was to leave for the heavenly abode, Mata Sahib Kaur was told by him to leave the place and join Mata Sundari in Delhi. Guru Gobind Singh handed to Mata Sahib Kaur five weapons and his Insignia through which 9 Hukamnamas (Letter of Command) was issued for the Khalsa.

    BE A READY CONGREGATION Tip Sheets for Faith Community Partners Competency Guidelines: Sheltering & Mass Care for Sikhs These guidelines are provided to inform cultural competency and reasonable religious accommodation mandates for U.S. Mass Care providers, and to assist staff and volunteers in competently meeting the needs of Sikhs during disaster response or recovery operations —whether at a government or private shelter, or a shelter in a Gurdwara (a Sikh temple) or any other house of worship. In Mass Care registration or service settings, Sikhs may or may not choose to self -identify and, despite common assumptions, their outward dress or appearance may not identify them as Sikh. Moreover, ethnic or regional garb does not necessarily indicate religious observance. The Sikh faith originates from the Punjab region of Pakistan and India. For example, aside from the Sikh turban ( Dastar ) which some Sikh men (common) and women (less common) choose not to wear, Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Muslims and members of other faith communities from South Asia may also wear the same (or similar) ethnic clothing. Although some Sikhs may feel comfortable raising concerns about their religious needs, others may not voice their concerns regarding any or all of the following issues. SHELTERING • Greetings and Physical Interaction: Upon entering a Mass Care setting, families and individuals who appear in a turban or Punjabi garb, or self -identify as Sikh, will feel most welcome if staff demonstrate a willingness to respect and meet their cultural and religious needs. These first impressions matter. Staff must also recognize greeting customs. Sikhs greet one another, and can be greeted by non -Sikhs with the Punjabi salutation —Sat Sri Akal : roughly translated as, "Blessed is the person who says 'God is Truth.” Sikhs do exchange handshakes with, or embrace, people of the opposite gender.

    8/30/12 Anthropology News Unthreatening the Sikh Turban Harjant S Gill August has been a painful month for Sikhs living in the United States and worldwide. The August 5th shootings at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek Wisconsin brought up urgent issues of racial discrimination and xenophobia facing members of American Sikh community. To me the incident represents a symptom of larger problem of racist and anti-immigrant sentiments pervasive in current politics that implicates all minorities. In a divisive election year political pundits and politicians have stepped up the hateful rhetoric, preying once again on public fears of the unknown and the “other.” Sikhs, especially turban wearing Sikh men, are experiencing even greater level of racial profiling and violence since 9/11. With the turban being miss-associated with terrorism and religious extremism, it is easy to speculate on the gunman’s motives and why he specifically targeted turbaned Sikh men upon entering the temple. Seeing the images of the six victims led me to reflect on my own relationship to hair and turban. For me the two symbols have less to do with my faith and more to do with my cultural identity, my relationship with my family, my childhood in India, my experiences as an immigrant in the United States, and lately as a topic of ethnographic research and my latest documentary film Roots of Love: On Sikh Hair and Turban. All these words refer to the garment worn by both men and women to cover their heads. It is a headdress consisting of a long piece of cloth tied around the head. The Sikh turban, pag or pagrri is called a dastaar , which is a more respectful word in Punjabi for the turban. Importance of the turban in Sikhism When a Sikh man or woman dons a turban, the turban ceases to be just a band of cloth; for it becomes one and the same with the Sikh's head. The turban, as well as the five other articles of faith worn by Sikhs, has an immense spiritual and temporal significance. While the symbolism associated with wearing a turban are many — sovereignty, dedication, self-respect, courage and piety, the main reason that Sikhs wear a turban is to show their love, obedience and respect for the founder of the Khalsa Guru Gobind Singh. Historical Background The turban has been worn by people for thousands of years. In ancient Egypt, the turban was worn as an ornamental head dress. They called it ‘pjr’, from which is derived the word ‘pugree’, so commonly used in India. Kohanim (priests) in the Jewish temple in Jerusalem wore turbans; they go back at least as far as biblical times! Traditionally in India, the turban was only worn by men of high status in society; men of low status or of lower castes were not allowed or could not afford to wear a turban.

There are claims of funding from Sikhs outside India to attract young people into these pro-Khalistan militant groups.

Loh Prakash - Akali Hazura Singh Nihang - 1925 Foreward It is oral tradition that the Sarbloh Granth Sahib was completed at the Sarbloh Bunga, now called Langar Sahib at Hazur Sahib (Takht Abachal Nagar, Hazur Sahib, Nanded). The last verses were heard by Banda Singh Bahadur and were written from Sanskrit sutras1 preserved by a sect of Sadhus, who are said to have handed them down from the time of Guru Gobind Singh’s previous avatār,2 Rishi Dusht Daman. The sutras are still in a private collection with a family at Hazur Sahib. From manuscript evidence we can conclude that the bulk of the Sarbloh Granth Sahib was commenced around 1698 AD at Anandpur Sahib and completed in approximately 1708 AD at Hazur Sahib. The Holy Granth contains ‘The Praise of the Khalsa’, and this would therefore coincide with the momentous event of the formation of the Guru Khalsa Panth, in approximately 1699 AD (1756 VS) according to the Gregorian calendar.3 The tradition is corroborated by the fact that Hazur Sahib and the Gurdvare in the surroundings area have a number of extant manuscripts of Sarbloh Granth Sahib.

    Vaisakhi: Celebrating the Feminine with Angad Kaur in Birmingham Organised in collaboration with Sikh Nari Manch Saturday 15 April 2017 1.00pm – 5.30pm Free event but donations to either charity gratefully accepted Vaisakhi is the global festival celebrating the creation of the Khalsa and the Amrit Sanchar, when Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Spiritual Master in the lineage of Sikh Gurus, called those who were prepared to give their life to the teachings and uphold the spiritual path to step forward and receive Amrit (divine nectar). In this ceremony, Guru Gobind Singh, the “Father of the Khalsa”, represents the verticality and strength of the male while Mata Sahib Kaur, known as the “Mother of the Khalsa”, represents the sweetness of the divine feminine. So the male and female polarities are in perfect balance. Guru Gobind Singh, a majestic and courageous spiritual warrior, had a bodyguard who was a woman known as Mai Bhago. She was also a great warrior and is known for leading 40 male soldiers who had abandoned their Guru back to the battlefield so they could meet their destiny of liberation. In this workshop, we’ll explore the role of these two women more widely in terms of qualities of the feminine that embody both sweetness and warrior spirit; share stories and examples including women who have inspired us more personally; reflect on qualities we’d like to cultivate within ourselves so we can walk in the world with both compassion and courage; chant mantras that expand our Radiant Body.
