Valladolid Bicol University College of Nursing, Legazpi City Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract This study is in response to the nation’s continued commitment to improve the health outcomes of Filipino children. It is an attempt to contribute to the sustainable development goal on good health and well-being (SDG 3) aimed at reducing the neonatal mortality rate in the country. This study determined the profile of mothers in the resettlement site of barangay Taysan in Legazpi City as well as their infant health beliefs and practices. It utilized the descriptive survey method and questionnaire-checklist as data-gathering instruments administered to 84 respondents who are mothers with children between the ages zero and one year old residing at Taysan resettlement site. Majority of the respondents were young housewives with meager income, with three children, and having had their first pregnancy when they were 22 years old. Based on ranking, their most common infant health beliefs on infant feeding, hygiene, and care of the sick include the following concepts: breastfeeding promotes mother-baby bonding and breast milk is better than infant formula in contents, bathing the infant any day except Tuesdays and Fridays to prevent illnesses caused by evil spirits, and applying chewed leaves or betel juice (mama) on the baby’s abdomen that can treat bloated belly and wounds. Their popular practices include breastfeeding regularly and breastfeeding infant on the well breast, applying 70% alcohol on the umbilical cord three times a day to prevent infection and promote wound healing, and giving doctor-prescribed medications only after consultation. Cultural beliefs and traditional practices still exist, which are associated with health risks and adverse health outcomes. Hence, there is a need to enhance the implementation of the essential newborn care (ENC) protocol while recognizing and appreciating indigenous health beliefs and practices. Rather than live in the resettlement area provided by the local government, they stay in the danger zone where they are faced with day-to-day danger brought about by their surroundings. While this study reveals the Ati peoples’ culture of disaster as manifested in their architectural adaptation, agricultural practices, and cultural practices, it also tackles their perceptions about the concept of danger, considerations for living in the dangerous area, and their significant contributions in the local community. Key words: disaster, culture, disaster, coping strategies Introduction Disaster is imbedded in the culture of the Filipinos and this culture of disaster is pivotal in the reduction of risks and danger. Yet, indigenous communities like the Ati peoples in Bicol experience neglect and marginalization. Arguing that the indigenous communities’ culture of disaster must be looked into and urging authorities to consider integrating this into policies, it is in this light that the researcher aims to examine the importance of the culture of disaster possessed by the Ati peoples. While disasters are considered as a broad as any type of individual or group stress (Quarantelli, 1985), this study implores on the idea that disasters do not occur out of context but are embedded in the political structures, economic systems and social orders of the societies.

Tomas *Corresponding author: [email protected] ABSTRACT – This ethnographic study intends to describe the culture-sharing group of empowered Filipino senior citizens in a neighborhood-initiated vertical gardening engagement. Guided by the empowerment framework, the descriptive characteristics and the empowering attributes were cultivated from the emic (vertical gardeners) and etic (researcher) perspectives through a 20-month immersion as a participant observer. Photographs of their gardens and their gardening engagements substantiate the richness of the description. Findings of the study highlights the fifteen shades of green represented by the different facets of Filipino elderly vertical gardeners, their vertical gardens, and their resonating cultural values. Empowering attributes that fosters sustainable vertical gardening engagements include: Grounding on values, beliefs and language; Growing desire to create vertical green space and a sense of place; and Grasping for knowledge, skills and sustainable practices. The cultural portrait elucidates understanding on the value of contextualization and inclusion for empowering the elderly in community greening. Further research could be undertaken to identify other attributes that could enhance the propensity of the senior citizens to engage in vertical greening. One of the greening initiatives undertaken by communities to alleviate the negative effects on urban health is gardening.
