Thursday, April 12, 7pm Continues through April 29, 2012 POETRY OF WISŁAWA SZYMBORSKA Co-presented by the UCLA Department Alina Szapocznikow: Sculpture Undone, 1955–1972 is the first museum survey in the of Slavic Languages & Literatures and United States devoted to this Polish artist. The exhibition brings to light the extraordinary the Hammer Poetry Series Polish artist and Holocaust survivor oeuvre of Alina Szapocznikow (1926–1973), one of the most significant but little-known Alina Szapocznikow reflected on the sculptors of the 20th century. At the core of Szapocznikow’s art is the ephemeral condition ephemeral condition of human life in of life and the human body. Her work oscillates between permanence and impermanence, from her work. L.A.–based artist T. Kelly Mason’s practice includes sculpture, performance, video, and works on paper. For Nocturne (Pierce Brothers Westwood Village)(2011), a new work created for the Hammer’s courtyard light boxes, Mason visited Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park, a cemetery just around the corner from the Hammer. Made in L.A. 2012 will also include the Venice Beach Biennial, from July 13–15, 2012, made possible through the generous support of the Teiger Foundation. For this unconventional and slightly unpredictable project directed by Ali Subotnick, the Venice Beach boardwalk will become a readymade exhibition space inspired by the Arsenale at the “real” Venice Biennale.
