Oldham Athletic vs. Colchester United Sky Bet League Two - Matchday 41 Friday 9th April 2021 - 7pm KO “There is always an extra buzz around KEITH CURLE the place on the back of a good win and that’s certainly been the case in our preparations for tonight’s fixture after the result on Bank Holiday Monday.”
Geng three points is the most important thing in any game but to have achieved that at Crawley Town with a performance of such authority and confidence means there has been a real energy within the camp this week. From a coach’s point of view, it was very pleasing to see the players execute the ideas we have been working on over the course of the past month and every one of them deserves credit for the part they played in such a comprehensive win. Although we want to be a possession-based team, it is important there is a clear sense of direc on to our play and we have spent a lot of our me on the training ground trying to develop the right balance. Having started the game on Monday with the right inten ons against a team we knew were on a difficult run of form, the lads kept their pa ence un l the breakthrough arrived and then displayed a ruthlessness in securing the result. The a tude from the en re squad since I arrived has been first class and even though results have not always gone our way in recent weeks, they know the importance of taking on board the informa on we given to them and the value of keeping a posi ve mentality. We were all delighted to see Conor McAleny back on the scoresheet and the assurance he displayed in his finishing, par cularly for the first goal, was that of a quality goalscorer. We all know how important Conor is to our team, he has had a very good season and a er going close a number of mes in the game, his goals were reward for his perseverance. All the players have adapted to how we want them to play and no-one typifies that more than Davis Keillor-Dunn, who has con nued to show his value in both crea ng goals and scoring them in recent games. Davis is one of several players who have now commi ed themselves for next season and having a core group already in place who are passionate about doing well can only benefit the club as it plans for next season. There may only be six games of the current campaign remaining but that’s why I have stressed to the squad that they all have something to play for. Tonight we welcome a Colchester United side who have found results difficult to come by lately and have made recent changes to their coaching staff with the appointments of Hayden Mullins and Paul Tisdale. Our last home game against Stevenage was very disappoin ng and with only three more games to play at Boundary Park, we want to sign off in the best way possible. Despite the result on Monday, there are areas of our game that we must s ll work on to improve. Our objec ve has always been to develop a cohesive team unit which is capable of ge ng results in different circumstances and the remaining games provide us with the chance to test our con nued progress in that regard. We were all pleased to put on the performance at Crawley for you at the end of the Bank Holiday and we will be looking to ensure you can enjoy the weekend ahead on the back of another posi ve result tonight. 10 - THE OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME OF OLDHAM ATHLETIC FOOTBALL CLUB BOUNDARY BULLETIN - 11 A SIGN OF CHARACTER! Academy Manager Paul Murray reveals that when he played for Latics, the lads would share their appearance money and claims that’s a sign of their character.
"When I was a player here at La cs, everybody were good people and one significant thing that I can remember, and it'll never happen today, was when we were on the bench and got subbed on, you'd get appearance money. “But what we'd do is share what we got between all the subs that didn't get on so that's a mark of the people you're working with. I'm sure that stuff like that will never happen again in football, could you imagine you're a player and don't play but the other lads are willing to give you their earned money, and that's just what we did. It just shows the type of people that were in that La cs squad under Iain (Dowie)."
