South Carolina .2,382,594 Total 1960 Census 179,323,175 PREFACE Monroe, North Carolina "CITY OF PROGRESS" UNION COUNTY Union County with an average altitude of 600 feet, lies in the south- ern section of North Carolina. Monroe, the county seat, in the center of the county, is just 23 miles southeast of Charlotte, connected by a smart new four-lane highway. Union County is in the heart of the famous Variety Vacationland — the scenic Appalachian Mountains to the northwest and the Atlantic coast and its many popular beaches to the east. A happy holiday is just a pleasant driving distance for all. POPULATION The population of Monroe is 12,500, Union County, 45,350. Monroe is rapidly becoming better known in North Carolina as a city of progress. LABOR Labor, both white and colored, consists of skilled and unskilled and has a reputation of being dependable satisfactory workers. At present there is no organized labor in the county. CLIMATE Monroe enjoys a splendid year-round climate with excellent health conditions. The temperature—Mean 61 degrees, Winter low 18, Summer high 95, Average annual rainfall 46.1, Snowfall, very light. CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS AND CLUBS Civic organizations and clubs include Rotary Club, Lions Club, Optimist Club, Monroe-Union County Chamber of Commerce, the Jr. Chamber of Commerce, Civitan Club, American Legion, American Legon Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Executive Club, Business and Professional Club, Union County Farm Association Club, Union County Historical Society, Indus- trial Education Association, Monroe Gun Club, Monroe Park and Recrea- tion Commission, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Union County Hospital Auxiliary, Monroe Woman's Club, Junior Woman's Club, Beta Sigma Phi, Monroe Music Club, Monroe Garden Club, Little Theatre, Ladies Golf Club, Archery, and Moose Lodge. RADIO AND TELEVISION Radio reception is excellent at all points in the county from Monroe Station WMAP, and a large number of stations with national hookups in nearby cities and towns. Television reception is likewise good, over five different channels carrying nation-wide programs. NEWSPAPERS Two semi-weekly papers with a combined circulation of twelve thousand give the county a paper each weekday, also the Charlotte morning and afternoon dailies are delivered promptly throughout the county.
