VAN WERT — Entering his third year, Rob Adams looks to take strides this winter as he will attempt to progress the Lady Cougars basketball team near the top of the WBL. Through his fi rst two years Adams has compiled a 14-30 record. The Lady Cougars went 8-15 last year, and 3-6 in the WBL —they were knocked out of the tournament in the Sectional Semi-fi nals. That being said, 2018 is shaping up to a good year for Van Wert as Adams welcomes back four starters from last years’ team. Abby Jackson, Alexis Metz, Reagan Priest and state-qualifying cross-country runner Caylee Phillips all return as starters. “We bring back our nucleus of players and expect to compete for the WBL,” said Coach Adams. “Our strength is our speed, quickness and overall skill set.” Returning along with the group of four starters will be Jerica Huebner and Sierra Shafer. The team will also be aided by a slew of newcomers in Jaylyn Rickard, Carly Smith, Allison Schaufelberger and Isabella Carr. Two key players the Lady Cougars lost were Cassidy Meyers and Alexis Rupert— as both both graduated. The Cougars have an interesting chance to have a good season in 2018-19. Of the players returning, Abby Jackson received a honorable mention nod for her play last winter. “We will rely on improved defense and transition style of pay on offense,” said Adams on what his team need to do this winter to be successful. “We will need to play much than our overall size and must do a great job of boxing out and rebounding. HAVILAND - Over the history of the Wayne Trace boys basketball program, the Raiders have compiled impressive numbers that include 29 championships, 24 sectional champion- ships, 11 district titles, 5 regional champi- onship and one state championship. However, those numbers will mean abso- lutely nothing when the 2018-2019 version of the Raiders hits the floor but a lot of ques- tion marks will need to be answered. Wayne Trace lost three starters to grad- uation from a team that finished 18-6 a year ago and won a GMC title and a sectional championship. Gone are a combined total of 30.6 points and 15.5 rebounds from that squad but the cupboard is not bare. Head coach Jim Linder, entering his 11th year at the top of the program and 30th sea- son overall as a coach, comes into 2018-2019 with an overall record of 156-84 and knows the Raiders will have a different look. “We’ve got some guys back but we also have some new guys who are going to have to work into spots so building some chem- istry up will be a key early on,” noted the veteran Raider coach. “Players that return The 2018-19 Wayne Trace boys basketball team.
