Miscellaneous St. Leger family correspondence ................................................. 27 1 Introduction The St. Leger family The St. Leger family, which came to Britain during the Norman conquest of England, first settled in Ireland upon the appointment of Sir Anthony St. Leger as Lord Deputy of Ireland in 1540. The family became linked with Doneraile, Co. Cork upon Sir William St. Leger’s occupation of Doneraile Castle in the 1630s. The titles of Viscount Doneraile (Co. Cork) and Baron Kilmayden (Co. Waterford) were created for Arthur St. Leger in 1703. After Hayes St. Leger, 4th Viscount, died in 1767 without issue, the estates passed to his nephew St. Leger Aldworth who took the St. Leger name and arms as a condition of his inheriting the property. The title then underwent a second creation and St. Leger St. Leger, as he was known, became the 1st Viscount of the second creation and Baron Doneraile. Most of the St. Leger family’s property was sold to tenant farmers under the various land acts passed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, leaving only Doneraile Court and demesne in the family’s possession. The latter was purchased by the Irish Land Commission in 1943 and the family home in 1969. The papers The Doneraile papers were kept at Doneraile Court until 1969, after which most of this material was purchased by the National Library of Ireland (see Collection List 62). Some of the earliest deeds in the family’s possession, however, had been separated from the rest of the collection and were only acquired by the library at a later date. It is this earlier material which is described in this collection list. Contained in 10 boxes and despite their age, the papers are generally in good condition. Pedigrees of the St. Leger family can be found in the National Library of Ireland Genealogical Office. A family tree appears in Collection List 62. Material relating to the St. Leger family held in various libraries in Britain can be found through a search of the National Library’s online ‘Sources catalogue’ or Richard Hayes’ Manuscript sources for the history of Irish civilization (Dublin, 1965). Assessment The papers in this collection are a valuable historical source on the St. Leger family, the areas of north Cork, Fermoy, Waterford and Meath, the military history of County Cork (including the period of the 1798 rebellion) and business practices in late seventeenth- century Waterford. This material should be seen in conjunction with that listed in Collection List 62, which includes related material as well as many later papers of the Doneraile family. The papers in this collection consist primarily of property deeds of the St. Leger family from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. These include documents relating to the 2 acquisition of Doneraile by Sir William St. Leger in the 1630s and various lease agreements made for property in County Cork in the century thereafter. In addition, there are numerous documents relating to property dealings in County Waterford. The St. Leger family acquired an estate in Waterford through the marriage of Arthur St. Leger, 1st Viscount, to marriage to Elizabeth Hayes, a granddaughter of a successful businessman John Otterington, some of whose papers are included within this collection. There are also deeds relating to property in Leinster and Ulster, including seventeenth century property deeds held by the Deane family in Leinster (which were acquired by the St. Leger family upon the marriage of Hayes St. Leger, 4th Viscount Doneraile (1st creation), with Elizabeth Deane during the eighteenth century) and property deeds of the Conyngham family of Ulster, which became related to the St. Legers through the marriage of a daughter of George Lenox Conyngham to Hayes St. Leger, 4th Viscount, during the nineteenth century. POWER IN PLACE-NAMES: A CASE STUDY OF PRESENT DAY WATERFORD COUNTY, IRELAND A thesis presented to the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts Jessica E. Greenwald August 2005 This thesis entitled POWER IN PLACE-NAMES: A CASE STUDY OF PRESENT DAY WATERFORD COUNTY, IRELAND by JESSICA E. GREENWALD has been approved for the Department of Geography and the College of Arts and Sciences by Timothy Anderson Associate Professor of Geography Benjamin M. Ogles Interim Dean, College of Arts and Sciences GREENWALD, JESSICA E. M.A. August 2005. Geography PowerU In Place-Names: A Case Study Of Present Day Waterford County, Ireland (85U pp.) Director of Thesis: Timothy Anderson This study investigates the present day toponymns of Waterford County, Ireland. By using the Land Ordnance Survey of Ireland maps, a database was created with the place names of the county. This study draws upon both traditional and contemporary theories and methods in Geography to understand more fully the meaning behind the place names on a map. In the “traditional” sense, it focuses on investigating changes in the landscape wrought by humans through both time and space (the naming of places). In a more “contemporary” sense, it seeks to understand the power relationships and social struggles reflected in the naming of places and the geography of those names. As such, this study fills a void in the current toponymns and cartographic literature, which are both focused mainly on patterns of diffusion and power struggles in North America.

  • The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers
THE LIST of CHURCH OF IRELAND PARISH REGISTERS A Colour-coded Resource Accounting For What Survives; Where It Is; & With Additional Information of Copies, Transcripts and Online Indexes SEPTEMBER 2021 The List of Parish Registers The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers was originally compiled in-house for the Public Record Office of Ireland (PROI), now the National Archives of Ireland (NAI), by Miss Margaret Griffith (1911-2001) Deputy Keeper of the PROI during the 1950s. Griffith’s original list (which was titled the Table of Parochial Records and Copies) was based on inventories returned by the parochial officers about the year 1875/6, and thereafter corrected in the light of subsequent events - most particularly the tragic destruction of the PROI in 1922 when over 500 collections were destroyed. A table showing the position before 1922 had been published in July 1891 as an appendix to the 23rd Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records Office of Ireland. In the light of the 1922 fire, the list changed dramatically – the large numbers of collections underlined indicated that they had been destroyed by fire in 1922. The List has been updated regularly since 1984, when PROI agreed that the RCB Library should be the place of deposit for Church of Ireland registers. Under the tenure of Dr Raymond Refaussé, the Church’s first professional archivist, the work of gathering in registers and other local records from local custody was carried out in earnest and today the RCB Library’s parish collections number 1,114. The Library is also responsible for the care of registers that remain in local custody, although until they are transferred it is difficult to ascertain exactly what dates are covered.

  • Place Names of the Decies
THE PLACE-NAMES OF DECIES By VERY REV. P. CANON POWER D. LITT. M.R.1.A. SECOND EDITION CORK UNIVERSITY PRESS OXFORD: B. H. BLACKWELL. LTD. 1952 Published by The Cork University Press, University College, Cork. Printed in Ireland by Eagle Printing Co., Ltd., South Mall, Cork, Printers to the Cork University Press. FOREWORD Patrick Power was born at Callaghane, three miles from Waterford, on 8th March, 1862. He was educated at Ballygunner National School, the Catholic University School, Waterford, and St. John's College, Waterford. He was ordained in 1883 and for three years he worked on temporary mission in Liverpool. Being threatened with tuberculosis, he went to Australia, where he spent seven years in the diocese of Wilcania-Forbes, being Rector successively of Cobar, Bourke and Wilcania, New South Wales. He came into contact with the aborigines; and it as probably in Australia that his interest in archaeology was first developed. On his return to Waterford he was attached to the Cathedral for three years; he then successively became Diocesan Inspector of Schools, Chaplain to the De la Salle Training College, and Curate at Portlaw. About 1900 he published a Manual of Religious Instruction, which ran to thirty editions and was used extensively in this country during the first two decades of the century; it appears to be still in use in Australia. His interest in place-names, ecclesiastical antiquities and archaeology soon became more than a paragon or hobby. He made extensive explorations throughout Waterford. Even in his student days he published in local papers articles on Waterford history.
