An interesting lot from the "smaller" States. (30) 600T 434 C B 1901 envelope with 'QUEENSLAND CLUB' embossing on the flap, to England with largely superb strike of 'GOVERNOR-GENERAL/[Coat of Arms]/FRANK STAMP/AUSTRALIA' h/s in blue with defaced Brisbane d/s of SP19/01 alongside, minor soiling & corner opening tear at upper-right but clear of the Frank. Rare usage from Queensland. [With newspaper extract of 28.9.1901 "Lord Hopetoun in Brisbane"] 300 436 C A/A- 1912 cover to USA franked with ½d issues from all six States tied Sydney '-4AP12' datestamps slightly overpaying 2½d foreign letter rate, also cover to Malta with mixed franking of Tasmania Pictorial ½d green, NSW Arms 1d red and ½d grey-green and Victoria Bantam ½d green tied 'ULVERSTONE/MR4/12/TASMANIA' datestamps paying 2½d UPU rate. [ACSC states interchangeable use of States' stamps Australia-wide was permitted from 13.10.1910] (2) 400 442 C B 1915-18 censor covers from Queensland to Switzerland (a dealer's cover with combination franking of 2d Roo + ½d Queensland), Holland or Denmark, each with red/white 'OPENED BY CENSOR' label, and from Adelaide to Holland with German 'Militarischerseits unter/Kriegsrecht geoffnet/Berlin D17, ben....1917/Uberwachungsoffizier' label, minor blemishes. (4) 200T 453 C A 1932 double-rate commercial Qantas cover to the company's Brisbane office with KGV 2d & 3d x2 tied by very fine 'DALY WATERS/NA' cds (rated RR), provisional blue & black/white registration label with Rat's Tail on 'R' & mss "Daly Waters". The rate was 2d per ounce + 3d per half-ounce airmail supplement x2. 250 457 CPS 1939-41 interesting airmail batch to Queensland mainly from Greece x14 including early censor labels & cachets, plus from Forces in Malaya x5 or Papua x5 (one with part-strike of the large 'PASSED BY CENSOR/...' h/s - very scarce on commercial mail - & two with the scarce boxed 'PASSED/BY/UNIT CENSOR' h/s), & a few others including 1941 (Mar 17) two almost identical covers to Greece but Returned to Sender, condition variable. ["Rangatira" departed Albany 1.11.2014, indicating this card was embargoed. Letter states "...we have just been informed that all our mail matters is under a strict censorship..."] 300 COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA - Military - World War II 522 PS A 1942 (Aug 25) usage of Japanese POW Envelope with printed device in red at upper-right & 'ZENTSUJI WAR PRISON CAMP/NIPPON' in blue at upper-left, from an officer to his wife or mother in Brisbane, large censor h/s - incorporating Hosotani seal - in violet. 200 PRISONERS OF WAR CAMPS - New South Wales Lot 570 570 PS B LIVERPOOL: POW Envelope with printed 'POST/FREE'-in-Double-Circle & 'SENDER'S NAME AND ADDRESS' on the flap (Emery #PSPE1), to Queensland with 'LIVERPOOL/3MR16/=NSW=' cds but with the address crossed-through indicating "stopped" by the censor, a few blemishes & a piece of the flap missing. A very scarce usage of a rare postal stationery item. [Usually, offending parts of a letter were obliterated or excised. However, occasionally the content of a letter was considered so offensive or treasonous that it was returned to the sender] 400T Page:2 Website:www.mossgreen.com.au Nov 28, 2016 Lot Type Grading Description Est $A PRISONERS OF WAR CAMPS - Queensland Lot 601 601 CL B ENOGGERA: INWARDS MAIL: 1915 (Oct 9) cover from London to Brisbane where forwarded to "Internment Camp/Enoggera", 'UNCLAIMED/ENOGGERA CAMP' h/s - affected by vertical fold - & forwarded to "German Concentration Camp/Liverpool/NSW". (EFR at page 215: only two other items - both inwards - are recorded.) This was one of the smallest camps, housing only 140 internees. In August 1915, the camp was closed & all inmates transferred to Holdsworthy NSW. 250T AUSTRALIAN POWs IN GERMANY 643 C (A-) 1917 cover to a POW c/- Australian Red Cross in London with KGV 1d red tied by 'GIN GIN/22AU17/QUEENSLAND' cds, 'BRITISCHER KRIEGSGEFANGENER' label with roneo'd address label affixed & tied by London cds of 12NO/17 & German censor cachet of Cassel POW Camp in violet, minor repaired tear at the top. 200T AUSTRALIAN POWs IN TURKEY Only 69 Australians were held as POWs by the Turks. Mail is rare. Gary Diffen in "The Australian Military Campaign at Gallipoli" (2015) identifies only 10 outwards items, six from Pte Sidney Drake: see pp139-141. At pp142-3 he states that only two inwards covers to POWs ex Gallipoli have been recorded] Lot 650 650 PS A- 1916 usage of KGV 1d Postal Card to an officer with the 15th Infantry Battalion c/- the American Embassy at Constantinople with KGV ½d added & tied by 'ALBION/22JA16/QUEENSLAND' cds & 'PASSED CENSOR/ 24JA16/BRISBANE' cds in red, British POW cachet also in red, minor corner bend. (Cat £420+); 1880 20/- with dubious Rays cancel; South Australia 1856-58 2d red SG 9 strip of 3 with good to large margins, a couple of small faults at left & manuscript cancellation removed; and Victoria Woodblocks 6d with Serpentine Roulettes SG 58 very fine used, Stamp Statute 1d postally used, ½d on 1d mint with large-part o.g. x6 & postally used x4, and 5/- affixed to 1883 Certificate of Incorporation, and Stamp Duty 5/- affixed within 1888 Articles of Association. An interesting group. 400 657 SDC A/B Travelling Post Offices collection on display pages from all Colonies/States except Victoria mostly in Colonial period including on covers and cards and also some mounted Commonwealth material, noted New South Wales with 'WEE WAA/TPO', 'MOREE TO WERRIS CK' and 'ENGLISH MAIL/NSW' on 1910 cover from Hungary, Queensland Great Northern 'GN RAILWAY/QUEENSLAND' on Chalon 6d and 'TPO 6 S&WR' on Papua 2d Lakatoi, South Australia early 'RAILWAY/SA', squared circles and partial 'PAY TRAIN/TRA...' (Trans-Australian Rwy), Tasmania with 'TPO' and 'TML' types on Pictorials on picture postcards and Western Australia 'TPO EGF/WA' (Eastern Goldfields) on Swan 1d blue postal card, condition variable but overall fine.
