COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA - Postal History (continued) Lot Type Grading Description Est $A

Lot 433 433 PS A 1900 (Dec 17) envelope with a superb strike of the 'GOVERNOR-GENERAL/[arms]/FRANK STAMP/AUSTRALIA' handstamp in blue uncancelled but with a Sydney duplex of DE17/00 alongside, embossed 'Government House, Sydney/[arms]' in red on the flap, 'EDGECLIFF/DE18/1900/NSW' arrival b/s. An extremely important cover, in excellent condition, and a marvellous first page for an Australian Postal History collection.

This usage pre-dates Federation (1st January 1901) by 14 days, and is the Earliest Recorded Usage of the Frank Stamp. Although the Earl of Hopetoun had arrived in Sydney from England in mid-December, he was still merely the Governor-General-Designate. The usage of the Governor-General Frank in this period was therefore unauthorised, inappropriate and highly irregular. In fact, Hans Karman has advised that Lady Hopetoun was the offender: the cover bears her handwriting & the addressee looked after her horses. It is telling that the Frank is correctly uncancelled signifying that its validity was not accepted by the post office. However, it was not taxed, presumably as a courtesy to the illustrious sender. [A very similar example of 18.12.1900 - also with the Frank uncancelled, & untaxed - sold at the Prestige auction of 27.7.2009 for $1092] 1,000 434 C B 1901 envelope with 'QUEENSLAND CLUB' embossing on the flap, to England with largely superb strike of 'GOVERNOR-GENERAL/[Coat of Arms]/FRANK STAMP/AUSTRALIA' h/s in blue with defaced d/s of SP19/01 alongside, minor soiling & corner opening tear at upper-right but clear of the Frank. Rare usage from Queensland. [With newspaper extract of 28.9.1901 "Lord Hopetoun in Brisbane"] 300 435 CL B 1906 OHMS cover with 'Department of External Affairs' imprint at lower-left, to "Colonel Mackay/Chairman/Papuan Royal Commission/...Sydney" with Victorian 1d & 4d both punctured 'OS' tied by 'SPENCER STEET RS/ AU28/06/MELBOURNE - VICTORIA' duplex, minor blemishes. [Richard Breckon states that the late fee if posted at Spencer Street RS was 6d but this cover suggests the 3d fee applicable at the GPO, Stock Exchange & Rialto also applied at the station. The 1906-07 Royal Commission of Inquiry into British New Guinea investigated discontent in the Administration to advise on "present conditions, the method of government of the Territory of Papua and the best means of their improvement"] 150 436 C A/A- 1912 cover to USA franked with ½d issues from all six States tied Sydney '-4AP12' datestamps slightly overpaying 2½d foreign letter rate, also cover to Malta with mixed franking of Tasmania Pictorial ½d green, NSW Arms 1d red and ½d grey-green and Victoria Bantam ½d green tied 'ULVERSTONE/MR4/12/TASMANIA' datestamps paying 2½d UPU rate. Lot Type Grading Description Est $A WORLD WAR I PRISONERS OF WAR - General & Miscellaneous We are pleased to present the extensive collection formed by our old friend Neil Russell from England. From the outbreak of war, POW mail was required to be appropriately endorsed. The authorities quickly decided that it would be expedient to utilise handstamps rather than manually endorse each item of mail. However, because of the large quantity of mail being sent by POWs, in early-1916 - by which time virtually all POWs/internees were located in NSW - it was decided to issue forms with the required POW inscriptions pre-printed thereon. References are to "AIF Postal History" by Bob Emery (1984) & the "Supplement" (1988). In addition, many items are illustrated in "The Postal History of Australian Internees in WWI" by Elliott Finlayson & Russell (2011): they are noted as "(EFR at page XX)". 539 ? B/C - Two undated black/pinkish buff 'PAID LETTERS/FOR/Prisoner of War Camp/AUSTRALIA' labels with endorsements, faults. Rare survivors: the only examples we have seen. (EFR at page 11) (2) 100T

Lot 602 602 CB FORT LARGS: c.1916 stampless cover endorsed on the reverse "from/Leopold Weste/Prisoner of War", to Adelaide with very fine strike of the extremely rare '("signature/Capt")/C.O. R.A.G.A. 4th Military District' cachet in violet, repaired flap fault & overall light discolouration. Only three examples recorded. [The three covers were recently discovered in a family correspondence. They belong to another vendor & have never before been on the market] 1,000

Lot 603 603 C A- - a similar cover - no sender's endorsement - with superb strike of the cachet & very fine 'LARGS BAY/MY29/16/S.A' datestamp below, very minor discolouration at lower-left.

Fort Largs Internment Camp was so small & insignificant that its existence isn't even acknowledged on the Australian Archives website. Given that in 1915 virtually all internees in other States were transferred to the Liverpool/Holdsworthy Camps in NSW, it seems quite extraordinary that any inmates remained at Fort Largs in May 1916. Perhaps they had simply been overlooked! In addition to this recently discovered trio, the only other recorded Fort Largs item is a late-1917 inwards cover to a prisoner at "Mil Camp Fort Largs", sold at the Prestige auction of 7.7.2007 for $1667. 1,000 Page:35 Website:www.mossgreen.com.au Nov 28, 2016

Superb! (EFR at page 196)

The camp opened in October 1914. The commandant, Captain GE Hawkes, encouraged a brutal & oppressive regime that resulted in official complaints & an enquiry. The camp was closed in August 1915, & all internees were transferred to Holdsworthy NSW. Hawkes was dismissed from the Army. 750T

Superb!

With only 58 internees, this was one of the smallest camps in Australia. It was closed early-1915 & the inmates transferred to Holdsworthy NSW. The camp was so insignificant that Emery didn't mention it in either of his books & neither does the Bruny Island Historical Society website! A cover from a Bruny Island internee sold at the Prestige auction of 27.7.2009 for $2530. 600T 608 CO B - 1918 (May 6) Danish Red Cross cover (265x180mm) to "Bruni Island"!! with superb 'CL.2/[crown]/PASSED BY/CENSOR' cachet of Launceston in red & redirected to "Try Internment Camp/Liverpool/NS Wales", vertical fold. 400T PRISONERS OF WAR CAMPS - Victoria

With the complete 'OPENED BY/CENSOR' label removed to expose the cachet. [NB: this cachet is of larger format than the type in the previous lot & is NOT a case of 'CENSORED' having been removed] 500T

Lot 612 612 CA - 1915 plain cover to the Red Cross in Switzerland with very fine 'PRISONERS OF WAR DEPOT/LANGWARRIN' & 'SERVICE DE PRISONNIERS DE GUERRE/("A? [On-line references are contradictory, suggesting that the camp was closed in late-1915 & "most" inmates transferred to NSW; but that there were still some 320 internees on-site in 1917 & that the camp closed only in 1919. The absence of post-1915 postal articles suggests this is erroneous] (2) 350T

Lot 614 614 CL A VICTORIA BARRACKS: 1914 (Dec 26) OHMS cover with 'District Head-Quarters/Commonwealth Military Forces - 3rd Military District/Victoria Barracks, Melbourne' imprint, to "J Englander/German Club/Melbourne" with 'PRISONERS/OF WAR DEPOT' h/s & 1d Roo punctured 'OS' tied by Melbourne cds. An enigma. (EFR at page 180)

We can find no reference to a POW camp at Victoria Barracks. However, Langwarrin Camp seems to have opened only in January 1915 so it is likely that the initial intake of internees were held at the Barracks. The letter may have been a request for the addressee to turn himself in! 500T

Lot 615 615 PS B - INWARDS MAIL: 1915 (Mar 21) Feldpostkarte from Germany to "Viktoria Baraks" with British POW cachet in blue & Victorian 'ENGLISH MAIL TPO - JE 7 1915' machine backstamp, forwarded to "Prisoner of War/Camp/ Langwarrin", minor faults. An important item that confirms internment of Germans at Victoria Barracks. AE2 was completed in February 1914. With a crew of 3 officers & 27 seamen, it was deployed in the Dardenelles Campaign. Sinking a Turkish vessel on the way, it was the first Allied vessel to enter the Sea of Marmara where it operated, albeit unsuccessfully, for five days. Eventually it was disabled by a torpedo boat, the "Sultan Hissar". The captain scuttled his vessel & the entire crew were rescued, although four died in captivity. AE2 was the only Royal Australian Navy vessel lost to enemy action in World War I. 2,000T

A very early "country" letter, believed to be the earliest recorded letter to the British Isles from outside Sydney. The remarkably quick passage of only 18 weeks is explained by the writer: "This letter goes by a whaler direct to England, which is to sail tomorrow: her name is the Foxhound" and in a postscript "I beg to apologize for the slovenliness of this hasty scrawl. I reside 15 miles from Sydney, and an opportunity offers for sending it, which I am likely to lose but for the haste".

George Thomas Palmer arrived at Sydney in 1806 as a lieutenant with the 61st Regiment but with permission to settle there. Governor Macquarie held him in high regard. He became a major landholder, establishing "Pemberton Grange" near Parramatta, and was one of the earliest settlers of the Canberra district, taking-up 13,000 acres at Ginninderra. 1,800T

Lot 875 875 CB 1839 lengthy cross-written entire to "RW Allison/Streanshall/Macquarie River/VDL" headed "Port Phillip/Sunday July 8th 1839" and signed "ER Bostock" with very early usage of the ovoid first type 'MELBOURNE/[crown]/ --JU/18[39]/NEW.S.WALES' datestamp - with inverted month slug - & very fine boxed 'SHIPLETTER/20AU20/1839' backstamp of Hobart, rated "11" for inland transit Hobart-Macquarie River, minor soiling. A very early & desirable letter.

The addressee, William Race Allison, arrived at Hobart Town on 22.11.1822. He was granted 1000 acres on the Macquarie River & named his property "Streanshalh". He was an active participant in the "Black War" of the late 1820s to 1832 that claimed the lives of almost 900 aborigines & some 200 colonists. A state of martial law existed between 1828 & 1832, a bounty was paid for dead aborigines, & the mere 300-odd survivors were forcibly removed to remote areas including Flinders Island & Bruny Island.

Very few pre-1840 items from Victoria remain in private hands. This example is far more attractive, with a superior strike of the datestamp, than the Purves/Kelly/Peace 1839 entire to Tasmania that sold at the Prestige auction of 27.7.2009 for $1207. An 1839 missionary entire to London, with filing fold & the datestamp inverted, sold at the Prestige auction of 23.9.2011 for $4370. 1,500 Page:63 Website:www.mossgreen.com.au Nov 28, 2016

Ex Lot 876 876 C C/D 1841 (c.) entire headed "Melbourne August" & signed "WH James" to his father "Joseph James/George Town/VD Land" with a complete & almost very fine strike of the undated 'MELBOURNE/NSW' handstamp on the flap, a bit soiled but most presentable. The handstamp was introduced in 1837 when Melbourne's first post office opened. It was replaced by the first datestamp in early-1839 but continued to be used until 1842 as a shipletter marking. This example is not listed in Brian Peace's census of 22 covers. There are four internal usages & two are on letters from Tasmania, but this new discovery is the only recorded example to any destination other than Great Britain! [Also included is a scrofulous 1825 letter from Hobart to Joseph James but at Launceston]

The writer, states: "...I have made application for the situation as Master of the Light House and Signal Staff and I am promised it by the Arbour Master..." This dates the letter to no earlier than 1840, when Victoria's first lighthouse, at Point Gellibrand (Williamstown), was established. The addressee, Joseph James was a free settler & horse dealer. In 1840, he was jailed for insolvency. The letter refers to George Town identities "Old Quin" - Thomas Quin, a farmer but "not a gentleman"! - Samuel Sherlock, a publican, & Thomas Dryburgh, a free settler to whom convicts had been assigned. This collection is of "German standard" throughout and for it to appear at auction in Australia will surprise many. The used stamps almost exclusively have dated circular cancels and the mint stamps are almost exclusively "postfrisch". Key items have been certified by German expertisers. There is great historical and thematic interest throughout, capped off by an extensive range of postal stationery, covers and highly artistic propaganda postcards. While the subject matter may offend some, we believe it is an important element of the historical record. Nazi Germany was a mass of contradictions: on the one hand, spectacular industrial achievement and Teutonic pride; on the other, the tragic excesses of Hitler's megalomania and the appalling "Final Solution".

Lot Type Grading Description Est $A GERMANY - THIRD REICH - PICTURE POSTCARDS The following 14 lots present an insight into the events of 1927-39 within both Germany and Europe, which in turn escalated into World War II and the unspeakable horror of the Holocaust. The first two lots of predominantly photographic cards are a historical documentary of the period; the following dozen lots of Propaganda cards provide the socio-political commentary. Real-photo cards show the astounding scale of the Nuremburg Rallies at a time when the world was still in the grips of the Depression, and the vast crowds are quite overwhelming. The juxtapositions - of a youthful, energetic Hitler maneuvering against an aging, infirm Hindenburg; of the festive banners, eagles and tailored uniforms against the brutality to follow - are stark. It is no accident that red is the predominant colour of the Propaganda cards, as it was for Lenin’s Soviet and Mao’s Cultural Revolution. On the one hand, the power of the images sounds its own warning; on the other, our awareness of the artistic talent being subverted should not prevent us from appreciating it.

Ex Lot 1065 1065 C A/A- Hindenburg & Hitler collection illustrating the rise of the Nazi Party from 1927 to 1934 culminating in the elevation of Hitler to both Reichskanzler and Reichspräsident with some stamps (Cat €150), stationery and ephemeral items such as election ballot papers but mostly real photo postcards of people, places and events including 1932 March with 'Wahlt [vote] Hitler' graffiti, 1932 Braunes Haus NSDAP Headquarters postcard with 'Hakenkreuz von der Reichspost verboten' [Swastika prohibited by Post Office] cachet sent through the mails, 1933 Burning of the Reichstag Building, 'Day of Potsdam' and opening of the new Reichstag with numerous cards showing dignitaries and parades, Hindenburg's death in 1934, then a study of Hitler portraits and his house in the Bavarian Alps ending in ruins after the war, fine condition with quite a few postally used. GREAT BRITAIN - Postal History (continued) Lot Type Grading Description Est $A

Lot 1115 1115 CB 1912 complete 'MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO/...CHELMSFORD' parcel label (150x95mm) with private 'PARCEL POST.' & '11APR1912' handstamps both in violet, KEVII 6d purple tied by heavy 'CHELMSFORD'-in-Bars cancel & with part large-boxed 'PARCEL [Coat of Arms] CHELMSFORD/...' datestamp at left confirming the postage of "6", addressed to "Marconi Operator/RMS Titanic/co The White Star Line/Southampton", affixed to a slightly larger piece from the packet, minor creasing & blemishes. A marvellous piece of "Titanic" memorabilia that missed the sailing of the ship at noon on 10th April.

Considering the source, addressee & low postage rate, it seems certain that the packet contained telegram forms. The packet was actually handed to the first officer of "Titanic's" sister-ship, the "Olympic", with the intention of it being delivered to the "Titanic" in New York. However, as is well known, on the night of 14-15.4.1912, the "Titanic" - on her maiden voyage - collided with an iceberg & sank, with the loss of some 1500 lives.

In "Maritime Disaster Mail", Norman Hoggarth and Robin Gwynn state "...The only surviving items with postal associations are in the class of fascinating ephemera...several postmarked facing slips used by OS Woody, one of three American postal clerks on the Royal Mail ship...There are [two recorded] surviving articles posted on "Titanic" & taken off the ship [at Southampton] before the trans-Atlantic portion of its journey. And there exist a letter & a postcard written but not posted on board by two survivors..." About a dozen of the postal slips - post office stationery, not postal stationery - are known, of which several are institutionalised. John Woolfe's example sold at auction in 2006 for £6240. Another example - minor stains - sold at auction in 2002 for £11,763. In our opinion, this parcel label is the most evocative and most important postal item associated with this most famous of maritime disasters.

This extraordinary item survived only because it arrived after the departure of the ill-fated "Titanic". This is the first time that it has appeared in the philatelic market, having recently been "discovered" in a provincial general auction in England. It is believed to have been held since 1912 by the family to whom it was given by the First Officer of the "Olympic", and is offered with a piece of unused notepaper headed with embossed 'On board RMS Oceanic', plus two small original photographs, one captioned "Wireless/Apparatus" & the other "Alec Bagot/Marconi Operator/on RMS Olympic". 20,000 Page:84 Website:www.mossgreen.com.au Nov 28, 2016

Ex Lot 1116 1116 C/? A/B - three PPCs of the "Titanic" 1) unused with pencilled notes re the disaster; 2) used with 'BINGHAMTON NY/MAY2/1912' cancel, light crease; & 3) used with 'LYNN MASS/MAY4/1912' cancel & signed "Ella"; also PPCs of the sister-ship "Majestic" 1) by Irving Underhill (NY), unused; & 2) White Star Line advertising card used in 1927, bumped corners; plus small straining spoon with enamelled White Star emblem & 'RMS MAJESTIC'. [We are mindful of the fact that many "Titanic" cards are actually of her sister-ship "Olympic" with "Titanic" captions. It seems highly unlikely that two contemporary American cards could actually be of the doomed ship]

The card signed "Ella" is believed to be from Ella Bertha Holmes White, a Boston socialite & First Class passenger aboard the "Titanic", who survived the disaster. At the official inquiry she gave scathing testimony about the crew of her lifeboat, labelling them "inept & rude". Of the collision with the iceberg, she characterised the incident as "going over about a thousand marbles". This may be the postcard recorded by Hoggarth & Gwynn: see previous lot. German Philatelic Society (USA) Certificate (1975).

Although this is a doubly contrived cover, it does have redeeming features. 1) First Day Covers are scarce; and 2) because the surcharged registration labels were not issued until Jan 1915, it is a very late usage of #P51 which Powell notes was used only in Dec 1914, although Loughran's LRD is 15.1.1915. Lot 1318 1318 CB 1942 (May 28) unfranked cover from USA to Marine Corps serviceman "Joseph J. Reardon, Quartermaster Clk, Formerly in Philippine Islands, American Prisoner in Japan, c/- International Red Cross, Geneva, Switzerland" endorsed "Postage Free" with San Diego d/s carried on the first Prisoner of War mail exchange with Japan by the Red Cross ship Gripsholm, US censor tape but without any Japanese censor markings, some edge faults. [The Japanese invasion of the Philippines commenced within hours of the Pearl Harbour attack but most US POWs were not captured until the fall of the Bataan Peninsula in April 1942 and Corregidor in May 1942. Tett states (Vol 5, p75) only a "small amount of mail from the USA" was carried on this first exchange as very few next of kin had been notified, and does not illustrate a single example. Ruggiero (pp8-9) gives the exact amount as 3719 individual items addressed to US prisoners; by comparison the second exchange in 1943 carried 3,043 bags of mail. The Gripsholm left New York on 18 June arriving Lourenco Marques 22.7.1942 where the mail was transferred to the Conte Verde and Asama Maru arriving at Yokohama on 17.8.1942] 2,000 Page:98 Website:www.mossgreen.com.au Nov 28, 2016

Ex Lot 1319 1319 CB 1943-45 three covers sent unfranked plus a letter (without envelope) to US servicemen held in Japanese Prisoner of War Camps in the Philippines with range of censor markings, the first two in early 1943 carried by Red Cross ship Gripsholm on the second POW mail exchange (leaving New York on 2.9.1943 to meet the Japanese ship Teia Maru at Marmogoa, Portuguese India on 15.10.1943) and the other from late 1943 all endorsed "Camp #1" or similar on arrival at Bilibid Prison Camp for delivery to Cabanatuan Camp, also 1943 cover and 1945 postcard to US POWs in Japan both endorsed "12D" on face for delivery to Motoyama (Hitachi) Camp for labourers in the mines near Osaka, some faults as usual. [In 1945, prior to the Japanese surrender, American 'Rangers' launched a daring operation against Cabanatuan POW Camp. All of the 500+ prisoners were liberated for the loss of only two soldiers. This is still the most successful rescue in US military history and is the subject of the feature film 'The Great Raid'] (6) 800 RUSSIA - Postal History
