In tracing and bringing into focus the main currents of thought and critical studies of twenty-five years of dramatic writings, the book demonstrates not only the consistently high quality of Currency publications, but also the debt of Australian drama to the determined efforts of Curren­ cy's directors, Katharine Brisbane and Philip Parsons. Publishing does not create good literature, but it influences it in several ways. Availability of play texts means critical studies and research, and a continuous debate; it means teaching of the texts in secondary schools and tertiary institutions, and an increased awareness on the part of the general public. Currency Press published about ninety Australian plays in the last decade, a remark­ able achievement considering the financial uncertainties of publishing exclusively in an art form which is still considered the step-child of Australian literature.

A pervasive problem in U.S. schools is a curriculum that perpetuates cultural hegemony, lacks multiple perspectives, and adheres to scripts to accommodate education policy. “Re-membering” history by producing and studying democratized knowledge can counter master narratives. Applying critical race theory and Afrocentricity, this research explores curriculum development, culturally responsive pedagogy, and student outcomes in the context of urban education.     African Presence in the Americas before Columbus “Africans not only came here (before the Vikings or any other Old World group) but they left an impact upon America’s first major civilization.” – Ivan Van Sertima Did African people come to the Americas (North, South, and Central America) before Columbus’s arrival in 1492? If so, what primary source of evidence do we have of their coming? The Olmec civilization is the oldest known civilization in the Americas (North America, South America, Central America, and the islands of the Caribbean). In fact, the Olmec high culture is considered the mother culture of America. The Olmec homeland was in what is today Mexico. The Olmec were known as the “jaguar people,” and they produced a very artistic, religious, and scientific culture. One of the important ceremonial centers for the Olmec was in La Venta, Mexico. The first evidence of African people interacting with the Olmec civilization comes from a team of archaeologists led by Matthew Stirling, which rediscovered a huge stone head in 1938. The massive head stood eight feet tall, weighed ten tons, and was first uncovered by peasants in Tres Zapotes, Mexico. It was a bodiless head that had on it a peculiar helmet. Stirling wrote in his description of it, “The features are bold and amazingly Negroid in character.” Later excavations at La Venta, right next to the oldest pyramid in America, would turn up even more colossal stone heads, with similar helmets and bearing resemblance to African people. How did these artifacts amount to evidence of an African presence and influence? Let’s examine the numerous facts below: The leading historian in this area, Ivan Van Sertima found that similar colossal, bodiless heads had been found in only one other location in the ancient world: Tanis, the main harbor for seagoing ships of ancient Egypt.

(1935-2009), Rutgers: The State University of New Jersey professor of Africana Studies, and editor-founder of The Journal of African Civilizations held July 7, 1987 before the U.S. Congress to discuss the Christopher Columbus Quincentenary Jubilee Act, established on August 7, 1984 (98 Stat.1257) and formed on September 12, 1985. The Commission consisted of 30 members whose mission was to plan, encourage, coordinate and conduct the commemoration of the voyages of Christopher Columbus and to set forth general provisions and policies governing the process of recognition and support of the Quincentenary projects. In accordance with the terms of the Act that established it, the Commission was terminated on December 31, 1993 after submitting a comprehensive report to Congress that incorporated the Commission's recommendations for the commemoration.     Ivan Van Sertima Ivan van Sertima was a world renown public intellectual. Author of fifteen books, he was a major force in scholarship of the African Diaspora and of South American history. They Came Before Columbus: The African Presence in Ancient America, published by Random House (1977) now in its twenty-first printing (published in French in 1981 and in the same year was awarded the Clarence L. Hotle Prize, a prize awarded every two years "for a work excellence in literature and the humanities relating to the cultural heritage of Africa and the African Diaspora") was his most well-known book. He was born in Guyana, South America (1935), educated at the School of Oriental and African Studies (London University) and the Rutgers Graduate School, held degrees in African Studies and Anthropology, and received an honorary D.H.L. from The City University of New York via Medgar Evers College in 2003. From 1957-1959 he served as a press and broadcasting officer in the Guyana Information Services; and during the decade of the 1960's he hosted broadcast weekly from Britain to Africa and the Caribbean. As a literary critic, he was the author of Caribbean Writers, a collection of critical essays on the Caribbean novel, and also the author of several major literary reviews published in Denmark, India, Britain and the United States. He was honored for his work in this field by being asked by the Nobel Committee of the Swedish Academy to nominate candidates for the Nobel Prize in Literature from 1976-1980; he had also been honored as an historian of world repute by being asked to join UNESCO's International Commission for Rewriting the Scientific and Cultural History of Mankind.

    THE SANKOFA UNIVERSITY THE STUDY OF AFRIKAN-CENTERED HISTORY AND CULTURE Written and Compiled by Kwadwo Afrikan-centered Study Groups Why a Study Group? There has been an intentional effort over the last 300 years to not only strip us of all knowledge of who we are but also to remove the desire to know who we are. Our history has been kept from us and what little has gotten through to us has been changed. Much of the accomplishments of our Ancestors has been claimed by other people and taught to us as their history. After all, people who don’t know their history make excellent slaves, regardless of the type of slavery or the time period (18th century or 21st century). Many people of Afrikan descent in America (the Ausa people, Afrikans from the United States of America) have realized that they don't know as much about their history as they'd like to know or need to know. They are beginning to understand that not only have they been misled but that they are Afrikan people with a history that starts thousands of years before our savage kidnapping and enslavement in the Hells of North and South America. Various aspects of our history have been well documented by scholars of Afrikan descent--who tell our story from our point of view. This method of telling our story from our point of view has been called Afrikancentrism. Studying with other people helps learning. Discussions can point out aspects of the material that you didn’t consider. The repetition of good analysis helps in the retention of information.
