The Hon. Kevin Rudd AC Former Prime Minister of Australia

Kevin Rudd served as Australia's 26th Prime Minister (2007-10, 2013) and as Foreign Minister (2010-12). In office, Mr Rudd led the Australia's response to the Global Financial Crisis, reviewed as the most effective policy in the developed world. Australia was the only developed country to avoid recession. His government also ratified the Kyoto Protocol, apologised to Indigenous Australians, implemented a mandatory renewable energy target, delivered the national school curriculum, negotiated major reform of the health system, introduced national paid parental leave and pursued the world's first plain- packaging regime for tobacco.

Internationally, Mr Rudd co-founded the G20 Summit, drove the expansion of the East Asia Summit and steered Australia's successful UN Security Council bid. Since 2015, Mr Rudd has been president of the Asia Society Policy Institute, a 'think-and-do tank' based in New York. He chairs Sanitation and Water For All, chairs the International Peace Institute and co-chairs the National Apology Foundation. He has roles at the Harvard Kennedy School, Paulson Institute, Chatham House, Tsinghua University and the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Before politics, he was a diplomat, chief-of-staff to Queensland Premier Wayne Goss and Queensland Cabinet Office Director- General. He is researching an Oxford doctorate on China under Xi Jinping.

David Thodey AO Chair, NSW-Federal Financial Relations Review

David Thodey AO is Chair of the Commonwealth Science, Industry & Research Organisation (CSIRO) and Tyro Payments. He is also a Director of Ramsay Health Care, Vodafone Group and Xero (moving into the role of Xero Chair on 1 February 2020). Mr Thodey was formerly Chief Executive Officer of Telstra, and before joining Telstra, Chief Executive Officer of IBM (ANZ). Mr Thodey is currently Chair of an eminent Panel appointed by the NSW Government to lead an independent review of Federal Financial Relations.

Terry Moran AC Chair, Centre for Policy Development

Terry spent his early career as a public servant in the Australian (Commonwealth) and Victorian Public Services. Moran's first position as a public sector CEO was as Chief Executive of the Office of the State Training Board in Victoria from late 1987 until May 1993. In May 1993 he was appointed as the first Chief Executive Officer of the Australian National Training Authority in Brisbane. In August 1998 he became Queensland's Director-General of Education. Moran was appointed Secretary of the Department of Premier and Cabinet for the State of Victoria in July 2000 and held this position until his appointment as Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

Moran was the Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet from March 2008 to September 2011, the most senior position in the Australian Public Service. He was appointed by former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, and continued in the position under Rudd's successor Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

Tanya Smith Principal, Nous

Tanya has been a Principal at Nous Group, the largest Australian-founded management consulting firm, for almost 10 years. She leads Nous’ public policy practice and work with central agencies of government. With Nous, Tanya has led several significant intergovernmental projects and has advised several jurisdictions on potential improvements to our model of federalism.

In that work, Tanya drew on her experience serving for three years as Deputy Chief Executive in the South Australian Department of Premier and Cabinet, with responsibility for whole-of-government policy and Commonwealth-State relations. Her tenure coincided with the major overhaul of federal financial relations in 2008, which saw her involved in the development and implementation of new National Agreements and National Partnerships.

Tanya’s first career was in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade where she worked for some 16 years and undertook diplomatic assignments in London and Washington, D.C.

Michael Blythe Chief Economist and Managing Director, Commonwealth Bank of Australia

Michael Blythe is the Chief Economist and Managing Director at the Commonwealth Bank (CBA). His extensive experience as an economist reflects more than thirty years working in economic policy and financial market-related areas.

Michael’s role encompasses monitoring, analysing and forecasting trends in the Australian economy and financial markets. In addition, he prepares a wide range of research material on matters of current interest. In his capacity as the CBA’s Chief Economist, he is a regular conference presenter and media commentator on major economic developments and themes. Michael and his team have consistently ranked in the top three for macroeconomic analysis advice in various industry polls.

Michael works in the Institutional Banking and Markets division of the Commonwealth Bank. This division is responsible for managing the Group’s relationships with major corporate, institutional and government clients and providing a full range of capital raising, transactional and risk management products and services.

After graduating in economics from the in 1982, he spent a total of 13 years in various roles within the Economic Group of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). This included a stint at the International Monetary Fund in 1988. He was the RBA's Senior Economist from 1991-95. Key features of these roles involved the provision of economic analysis and policy advice. Jennifer Hewett National Affairs Columnist, The Australian Financial Review

Jennifer Hewett is National Affairs Columnist at The Australian Financial Review and writes a daily column on politics, business and the economy. A journalist with more than 30 years’ experience, Jennifer previously worked for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Australian. She has also worked in New York and Washington as a foreign correspondent.

Arturo Bris Professor of Finance, International Institute for Management Development (IMD)

Arturo Bris is Professor of Finance at IMD. Since January 2014 he is also leading the world-renowned IMD World Competitiveness Center. At IMD he directed the Advanced Strategic Management from 2009-2014. He has directed programs for senior executives in several industries and continents. Prior to joining IMD, Professor Bris was the Robert B & Candice J. Haas Associate Professor of Corporate Finance at the Yale School of Management (USA). A Research Associate of the European Corporate Governance Institute, and a member of the Yale International Institute for Corporate Governance, he has worked extensively on issues of Corporate Governance, Financial Regulation, and International Valuation.

His research and consulting activities focus on the international aspects of financial regulation, and in particular the effects of bankruptcy, short sales, insider trading, and merger laws. Arturo has also researched and lectured on the effects of the Euro on the corporate sector, as well as on the valuation impact of corporate governance changes.

Arturo is passionate about global competitiveness, financial development, and macroeconomics. His latest research identifies the relationship among income inequality, social mobility, and competitiveness. He is also developing a competitiveness-based investment portfolio that tracks the best and worst economies.

His work has been published in the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, The Review of Financial Studies, the Journal of Legal Studies, and CEDA will be tweeting from this the Journal of Business, among others. Melinda Cilento Chief Executive, CEDA

Melinda is a company director, economist and experienced senior executive. She is a non-executive director of Australian Unity and Co-Chair of Reconciliation Australia. Melinda is also a member of the Parliamentary Budget Office panel of expert advisors. She was previously a Non-Executive Director with Woodside Petroleum, Commissioner with the Productivity Commission and Deputy CEO and Chief Economist with the Business Council of Australia. Melinda has also previously held senior roles with the Federal Department of Treasury, Invesco and the International Monetary Fund.

Penny Burtt Group Chief Executive Officer, Asialink

Penny is the Group CEO of Asialink at the University of Melbourne, Australia’s leading centre for the promotion of public understanding of the countries of Asia and of Australia’s role in the region. She joined Asialink from global payments company Visa, where she served on the Asia Pacific leadership team based in Singapore. Prior to Visa, Penny led External Relations and Client Service Risk for the Asia Pacific with global management consultancy, McKinsey&Company.

Penny is a former diplomat and represented Australia at a senior level in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and at the United Nations in Geneva and New York. She previously served as a Senior Advisor to the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs.

In the course of her career, Penny has participated in key regional political and security forums, both as a senior diplomat and as a business representative. She has served on the Boards of the U.S. National Center for APEC, the American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore, and the Singapore Institute of International Affairs. Penny is an advisor to the ASEAN-Australia Strategic Youth Partnership. She is an Asia Pacific Board member of Meridian 180 academic network and was appointed to the India-Australia CEO Forum by the Minister for Trade in 2018.

David Stone Chief Growth Officer, Stellar

David Stone is Chief Growth Officer for Stellar, charged with implementing the company’s growth strategy in domestic, Asian and US markets across a range of customer experience products.

An industry veteran with 25 years’ experience David works with enterprise and government organisations to deliver customer experience transformation through digital strategies that include the careful consideration of people, process and intelligent automation.

Prior to joining Stellar, David was Group Manager at Telstra for the Customer Experience and Contact Solutions sales team. David has been a pioneer of speech recognition and biometrics, and is at the forefront of cloud automation, deploying cloud contact centres into government agencies. David has keen interest in innovation but with a philosophy of "people will always make the difference and the ultimate differentiator is customer experience"

David Orsmond has recently been appointed as a Professor of Economics at Macquarie Business School.
