THE FALLEN WOMAN AND THE BRITISH EMPIRE IN VICTORIAN LITERATURE AND CULTURE by ELLEN J. STOCKSTILL Under the Direction of LeeAnne Richardson, PhD ABSTRACT This dissertation focuses on the triangulated relationship among female sexuality, patriarchy, and empire and examines literary and historical texts to understand how Britons increasingly identified as imperialists over the course of the nineteenth century. This project, the first book-length study of its kind, features analyses of canonical works like Mansfield Park, David Copperfield, and Adam Bede as well as analyses of paintings, etchings, conference proceedings, newspaper advertisements, colonial reports, political tracts, and medical records from Britain and its colonies. I challenge critical conceptions of the fallen woman as a trope of domestic fiction whose position as outcast illustrates the stigmatization of female sex during the nineteenth century, and I argue that the depiction and punishment of fallen women in multiple genres reveal an interest in protecting and maintaining an imperial system that claims moral superiority over the people it colonizes. My critical stance is both feminist and postcolonial, and my work complicates readings of fallen women in Victorian literature while also adding significantly to scholarship on gender and empire begun by Anne McClintock and Philippa Levine. I claim that during the nineteenth century, the fallen woman comes to represent that which will threaten patriarchal and imperial power, and her regulation reveals an intent to purify the British conscience and strengthen the nation’s sense of itself as a moral and exceptional leader in the world. My investigation into fallenness and empire through a wide range of texts underscores the centrality of imperialism to British society and to the lives of Britons living far removed from colonial sites like India or East Africa. If there are exceptions, they are like those of men born blind or lame among us. It is part of our patrimony: born with our birth, dying only with our death; incorporating itself in the first elements of our knowledge, and interwoven with all our habits of mental action upon public affairs. W.E. Gladstone, England’s Mission, 1878 This dissertation aims to reveal the ways Britons in the nineteenth century came to see themselves as imperialists. While at first glance it might not seem that the identity formation of people who lived over one hundred years ago would have much bearing on the world we inhabit today, understanding this past, in fact, has great importance in a new era of global dominance. The United States’ sense of exceptionalism and military, economic, and cultural power certainly share characteristics with Britain’s global supremacy in the Victorian period, and understanding how the Britons saw themselves and their duty to the larger world can help explain or, at least, provide context for how today’s global powers interact, seek to exert influence, and protect their interests. Many historical studies of the British Empire have provided an overview of how this world power developed and some have looked at the role of women in the Empire’s geographical expansion and in the formation and preservation of imperial identity. My dissertation seeks to remedy a gap in scholarship by focusing on a particular group of women whose experiences intersect with imperial expansion in fascinating ways in both historical and literary texts. These women, described during the period as “fallen” because of their sexual behavior, are the recipients of disciplinary action meant to purify the British conscience and strengthen the 2 country’s sense of itself as a moral leader in the world. This project incorporates primary material, historical studies, literary criticism, and critical theory in order to better understand the formation of British imperial identity, and it shows that empire building was not just a man’s game but a complex discursive process in which fallen women played a vital, though unrecognized, role. While in the nineteenth century the domestic space was viewed as the rightful place for women, I show how both Gaskell and Oliphant expanded this idea to demonstrate within their novels and short stories the importance of what I term an 'extended domesticity'.

    eSharp Issue 9 Gender: Power and Authority Why Women Fell: Representing the Sexual Lapse in Mid-Victorian Art (1850-65) Jessica Webb (Cardiff University) The fallen woman relentlessly troubled the Victorian world. In a period obsessed with the idealisation of female virginity, the consequences of sexual experience outside wedlock often resulted in ruin.1 While Victorian society advocated the idea of the angel in the home, its art is overrun with images of the sexualised woman. Pre-Raphaelite paintings such as The Woodman’s Daughter by John Everett Millais and Abraham Solomon’s Drowned! Drowned! persistently attempt to explain the fall and, in doing so, controversially position the female as victim. In emphasising her blamelessness, the fallen woman is apparently separated from the dangerously independent figure of the prostitute. Masculine anxieties surrounding disease and illicit sex seem to be negated as, unlike a prostitute, the vulnerable female does not pose a threat to society. But it is not so clear cut; the boundaries between the fallen woman and prostitute blur, presenting them as equally vulnerable. Indeed, the issue of dishonour is never straightforward; the male artist reclaims an element of power by reducing sexualised women to objects of pity. Throughout the mid-nineteenth-century the use of subjects from literature was typical of many narrative paintings. Artists relied on the middle and upper class art audience belonging to a literate society. It will argue that the way young women attempt to conform to the ideology of evangelical Christian femininity promotes not so much young women’s faith in the kerygma of the Gospel, but in the rewards of attaining an appearance in compliance with a specific body-aesthetic. Yet, Lisa Isherwood's theology, articulated in her recent book The Fat Jesus (2007) and other texts, offers hope that the evangelical Christian woman can embrace both her body and her sexuality, despite the social, cultural, and spiritual pressure on women produced by the beauty and diet industries, as exposed by Natasha Walter and Naomi Wolf in their studies of those closely-related industries. The thesis seeks, then, to explore what it means for the evangelical Christian woman to feel acceptable before God and other Christians when her body, diet, beauty, and sexuality as a whole are seen as a visual indicator of her Christian self-discipline, virtue, and faith, and how Christian evangelical feminist theology can help us address and revisit this oppressive ideology.

Novels became best-selling sensations because of their risqué subject material, predominantly their positioning of women in places of power, even sexual power; content—which created a sensation in the titillated reader—became synonymous with this literary form. The sensation novelists were under no compunction to reiterate overwrought clichés to argue for a correspondence between sexual purity and moral goodness like their more conventional and canonical counterparts. I argue that because sensation novels allow sexual and powerful women admission into the institution of marriage, all the while insisting their fallen heroines’ moral fitness to be wives, the novels actively challenged Victorian ideals of femininity and female virtue and in doing so became a crucial component in the unmasking of nineteenth-century sexual hypocrisy.

Female wrongdoing was not only judged according to the law, but also according to the idealized conception of womanhood. It was this implicit cultural measure, and how far the woman contravened the feminine norms of society, that defined her criminal act rather than the act itself or the injury her act inflicted. When a woman deviated from the Victorian construction of the ideal woman, she was stigmatized and labelled. The fallen woman was viewed as a moral menace, a contagion. Foreign women who committed crimes were judged for their 'lack of Englishness.' Insanity evolved into not only a medical explanation for bizarre behaviour, but also a legal explanation for criminal behaviour. Finally, the habitual woman criminal and the infanticidal mother were seen as unnatural.

    116 A personal encounter with purity culture: Evangelical Christian schooling in Aotearoa/New Zealand OLIVIA STANLEY Abstract In this article, I employ an autoethnographic lens to look at the evangelical Christian purity movement, which I experienced within my high school and church in Aotearoa/New Zealand. To frame my discussion, I focus on two best-selling books by evangelical Christian writer Dannah Gresh: Secret keeper: The delicate power of modesty (2002) and also And the bride wore white: Seven secrets to sexual purity (2012). Both of these books were reverentially passed around my school and church circles as though they were sacred scripture. My analysis of Gresh’s writing and evangelical purity culture does not arrive without an agenda, but comes with a plea to end abstinence-only sex education and purity teachings. Introduction In the early 1990s and 2000s, there was a particularly potent, purity-based evangelical Zeitgeist that stormed America and swept overseas to Aotearoa/New Zealand. What washed up on our shores were the adopted principles of abstinence – the virtues of feminine virginity and the morality of marriage – which constituted a minefield of values that many evangelical Christians here embraced. Embedded in this mania, we buried our heads in the sand and accepted it without question. I say ‘we’, as I employ an autoethnographic lens in this article to look within the evangelical purity movement. What follows are my own stories and I am present in them as a privileged, Pākehā, middle-class, tertiary-level educated, self-identifying woman who benefits from the current heteronormative order.
