This project investigates the potential of self-directed, technologically mediated composition as a means of reconfiguring gender stereotypes within the operatic tradition. This practice confronts two primary stereotypes: the positioning of female performing bodies within narratives of violence and the absence of women from authorial roles that construct and regulate the operatic tradition. The Pomegranate Cycle redresses these stereotypes by presenting a new narrative trajectory of healing for its central character, and by placing the singer inside the role of composer and producer. During the twentieth and early twenty-first century, operatic and classical music institutions have resisted incorporating works of living composers into their repertory. -

Williams: Interview with Corey Washington, Independent Scholar on Jimi Hend Interview with Corey Washington, Independent Scholar on Jimi Hendrix Seretha D. Williams (3/6/2019) Most people in Augusta, GA, know Corey Washington. He is a popular history teacher, beloved by his students and their parents. He is a patron of music, attending local cultural events and supporting the burgeoning live music scene in the region. He is an independent author and expert on the life and music of Jimi Hendrix. Having seen him at the Augusta Literary Festival on multiple occasions and purchased one of his books on Hendrix for a friend, I decided to reach out to Mr. Washington for an interview on Hendrix, whom scholars describe as an icon of Afrofutur- ism. 1. How did you first become interested in Jimi Hendrix? I always have to mention the name of a disgraced individual Hulk Hogan, who was later exposed as a racist. But he was the one that hipped me to Hendrix because of his ring entrance music: “Voodoo Child.” The song opened with some weird scratching sounds, which I later learned was Jimi’s pre- cursor to a DJ scratching. He was manipulating the wah-wah pedal to get those sounds from his guitar. That drew me in, and I’ve been collecting his music and researching him ever since. That was in 1996. Follow ups: Washington grew up listening to Disco, House, and Hip-Hop. Born in 1976, Washington identifies a cultural “dead spot” for Hendrix between 1976 and 1990. I asked him why he thought that was. -

Arising out of "Negro History Week," which first began in the 1920s, February has since been designated as Black History Month by every U.S. president since 1976. Answer key are included. Some activities do not have answer keys because the answers will vary depending on the student. Pages 18 – 22 Reusable Activities for Students to Use with the Trading Cards – Students choose a few trading cards to complete the activities. Making and Using the Trading Cards Making the Cards 1. Cut on the straight dotted lines. Do NOT cut the solid line. 2. Fold the card on the solid line. 3. Glue the backs of the cards together so that one one side has the famous African American picture and the other side has information. 4. Save time by having the students create the cards! Or, create them yourself and laminate for multiple uses. Using the Cards 1. Place the cards in a center, and have students use the cards to complete the activities. 2. Give partners a card to study and present to the class. 3. Give partners a set of cards and have them complete the activities together. 4. Teresa: It's extraordinary etiquette... Travis: For ordinary occasions! Hello, my dove. Teresa: Hello, dear. Travis: How are you on this snowy Thursday? Teresa: You know, fine. Travis: Would you still call—I mean, there's snow outside, but it's not snowing. Teresa: Not snowing anymore. Uh, it's, you know... fine. [laughs quietly] Travis: It's fine. Bebe went sledding for the first time this morning, after asking about it—so, we've had a couple, like, light flurry snowfall, and any time there's snow in the air she's like, "[excited] We can go sledding!" And it, uh, never sticks. And this time it stuck, and there was enough to go sledding. She went down a tiny hill twice. Teresa: Yeah. Travis: And then we were like, "Do you wanna go down again?" Photo: Rick Koeshall Photography ii George Washington Carver National Monument About Interpretive Planning Planning is organized decision-making. Park staff and partners work in collaboration to determine direction, think through parameters and mutually agreed-upon criteria, and use data to make informed, strategic, and realistic decisions about future actions. The goal of visitor experience planning is to make decisions and set priorities that help to strategically apportion limited NPS resources to their best advantage to do the most good in service to the public. A good interpretive plan has focus, provides direction, and reflects informed choices to move an organization forward. Good plans don’t overwhelm or promise to do too many things. Good plans also experiment and stretch organizations and challenge their individual members to experiment to meet current and future audience needs and expectations. Interpretation planning is built on data, regular reviews and analysis, and annual adjustments to the action plan. With attention to annual reviews and incremental adjustments, large-scale, “one-and-done” planning efforts become less necessary, and incremental iterative planning becomes more effective, tailored, flexible, and responsive to current audiences, needs, and circumstances. These shorter cycles Park ranger talking have the added benefit of better matching the strategic planning cycles of partners to visitors at the Boy and philanthropies. -

Sacagawea, a Lemhi Shoshone women, served as interpreter and guide for Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery, starting in 1804. As a teenager, she traveled with her infant, helping negotiate passage over lands inhabited by various tribes and securing additional guides and horses for the party. She received no compensation for her services, but her French husband received $500. Tie Sing, a Chinese backcountry cook, worked for the U.S. Geological Society as they mapped and explored Yosemite National Park in 1915. Sing fed an expedition of men who would eventually be instrumental in the management of public lands, including Stephen Mather, first director of the National Park Service. Printed Stories The Buffalo Soldiers, an all African American army regiment, were among the first park and backcountry rangers, patrolling Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks both on horse and bicycle. Charles Young became acting military superintendent in 1903 and is considered the first African American park superintendent. Young oversaw the creation of infrastructure and worked to suppress wildfires, poaching, and illegal grazing within the parks. George Washington Carver (1864-1943), was an African American born a year before the abolishment of slavery. He was a notable agricultural scientist, botanist, and environmentalist who developed methods for improving soil in order to maintain sustainable harvests. Module 3 | Lesson 1 Materials In the 1770’s, Brister Freeman and Zilpah White were freed slaves who lived around Walden Pond, famed retreat of writer, environmentalist and activist Henry David Thoreau. Walden was a settlement for freed slaves prior to Thoreau’s residency and the stories of Freeman and White, among other freed slaves and individuals from marginalized communities, served as an inspiration to Thoreau. -

George Washington Carver and Friends January 13th, 2020 10-11am, Grades 1-5 This study guide will give you background information, discussion questions, and activity ideas to do with your class before and after the performance at the PAEC. Performance Information: George Washington Carver and Friends by Bright Star Touring Theatre gives students a fast- paced and accessible introduction to many influential Black Americans who have shaped our nation over the last 150 years. The lives and accomplishments of George Washington Carver, Booker T. Washington, Jackie Robinson, Thurgood Marshall, Madame C. J. Walker, and other famous leaders are brought to life in this empowering production. Two actors perform this play by portraying multiple characters. George Washington Carver (1860s – 1943), was born into slavery and grew up to be a scientist, inventor, and professor. He worked to help farmers, protect the environment, inspire students, and make new discoveries in agricultural and chemical research. He saw clearly how the health of the land and the health of the people connect, and worked to improve both. He is famous for encouraging farmers to grow peanuts (and sweet potatoes) because he saw how only growing cotton was destroying the soil and keeping the struggling Black farmers poor. Carver's gravestone reads: “He could have added fortune to fame, but caring for neither, he found happiness and honor in being helpful to the world.” The George Washington Carver National Monument in Missouri was the first national monument dedicated to an African-American and the first to honor someone other than a president. It opened in 1953.
