Black Women, Natural Hair, and New Media (Re)Negotiations of Beauty
“IT’S THE FEELINGS I WEAR”: BLACK WOMEN, NATURAL HAIR, AND NEW MEDIA (RE)NEGOTIATIONS OF BEAUTY By Kristin Denise Rowe A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of African American and African Studies—Doctor of Philosophy 2019 ABSTRACT “IT’S THE FEELINGS I WEAR”: BLACK WOMEN, NATURAL HAIR, AND NEW MEDIA (RE)NEGOTIATIONS OF BEAUTY By Kristin Denise Rowe At the intersection of social media, a trend in organic products, and an interest in do-it-yourself culture, the late 2000s opened a space for many Black American women to stop chemically straightening their hair via “relaxers” and begin to wear their hair natural—resulting in an Internet-based cultural phenomenon known as the “natural hair movement.” Within this context, conversations around beauty standards, hair politics, and Black women’s embodiment have flourished within the public sphere, largely through YouTube, social media, and websites. My project maps these conversations, by exploring contemporary expressions of Black women’s natural hair within cultural production. Using textual and content analysis, I investigate various sites of inquiry: natural hair product advertisements and internet representations, as well as the ways hair texture is evoked in recent song lyrics, filmic scenes, and non- fiction prose by Black women. Each of these “hair moments” offers a complex articulation of the ways Black women experience, share, and negotiate the socio-historically fraught terrain that is racialized body politics -

He not only races boats and wins multiple championship, he builds the boats and sells them to high-powered clientele. But his long-established mob ties catch up with him when Meyer Lansky forces him to build boats for his drug-running operations. Ben lives a double life, rubbing shoulders with kings and politicians while at the same time laundering money for the mob through his legitimate business. -

Media and Culture
CHAPTER 5 Media and Culture Although literature and the arts remain important cultural forms, popular culture— television, movies, music, print media, and the Internet—also plays a signifi cant role in refl ecting, reinforcing, and sometimes subverting the dominant systems and ideologies that help shape gender. Popular culture is very seductive; it refl ects and creates societal needs, desires, anxieties, and hopes through consumption and participation. Popular culture also provides stories and narratives that shape our lives and identities. It gives us pleasure at the end of a long day and enables us to take our minds off work or other anxieties. In this regard, some scholars have suggested that popular culture regulates society by “soothing the masses,” meaning that energy and opposition to the status quo are redirected in pursuit of the latest in athletic shoes or electronic gadgets. Of course, popular culture creates huge multi-billion-dollar industries that themselves regulate society by providing markets for consumption, consolidating power and status among certain groups and individuals. Media conglomerates have merged technologies and fortunes, consolidating resources and forming powerful corporations that control the fl ow of information to the public. Over the last few decades globalization (those forces integrating communities and economies into a global marketplace) has created global media with powerful mass media corporations that both dominate domestic markets and infl uence national governments. The Walt Disney Company, for example, is the largest media conglomerate in the world with almost U.S. $50 billion in revenue and $5 billion in profi ts in 2012. Disney is closely followed by Comcast with more than $4 billion in profi ts and then Time Warner with almost $3 billion. -

Glass Literary Management Rights Guide—Spring 2018
GLASS LITERARY MANAGEMENT RIGHTS GUIDE—SPRING 2018 NEW FICTION Very Nice By Marcy Dermansky Knopf, expected pub date Summer 2019. Just sold in a major six-figure pre-empt. Acquired by Jenny Jackson. A blistering comic satire of our post-Obama era, featuring a wealthy Connecticut divorcee, her college-age daughter, and the famous Pakistani-American novelist who seduces them both, positioned as the author’s breakout novel In VERY NICE, Marcy takes the typically male-driven, suburbia-gone-awry novel and sets it on fire. Rachel Klein is an inexperienced college student and aspiring writer. Becca Klein is a beautiful and newly separated Connecticut middle school teacher. Zahid Azzam is a once-heralded Pakistani- American novelist and professor. Jonathan Klein is a wealthy banker, just separated. Khloe Taylor is a biracial MBA graduate and aspiring banker. Marcy takes these characters and ingeniously interweaves them in a stew of sex, secrets, and betrayal. Navigating between the worlds of high finance and creative writers, this novel takes on everything—divorce, rich people, the suburbs, writers, bankers, sexual harassment and abuse, race, sexual identity, school shooters, STDs. Nothing is safe, and the result is a subversive, darkly hilarious and amazingly readable satire about the way we live now. Complete manuscript available. Press and reviews for the author’s previous books available on request. The Translator’s Daughter By Kate McQuade William Morrow, expected pub date Fall 2019. Sold in a pre-empt to Kate Nintzel. A gorgeously written, linked collection that begins with six girls as they meet in boarding school at age twelve and follows their lives after their favorite teacher dies tragically, showing how an early loss can reverberate to destructive, restorative, and sometimes magical ends THE TRANSLATOR’S DAUGHTER tells the story of six girls as they turn into women over the course of fifty years, starting when they’re twelve. -

He's Gotta Have It All: the Commercial Impulse in the 21
HE’S GOTTA HAVE IT ALL: THE COMMERCIAL IMPULSE IN THE 21ST-CENTURY SPIKE LEE JOINT by Jesse Williams, Jr. A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Faculty of the Graduate School at Doctor of Philosophy in English Middle Tennessee State University 2013 Dissertation Committee Dr. Laura Dubek, Chair Dr. Will Brantley Dr. Robert Holtzclaw For Roger Ebert, who “saw it all.” ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I extend my heartfelt gratitude to my parents for not raising a quitter. As a result, entering the academic profession will ensure that I will not quit digging in their pockets. Likewise, thank you to the College of Graduate Studies for the Provost’s Writing Fellowship and the Department of English for the Peck Award: the stipends were much appreciated. Thank you to Dr. Philip Phillips for his graduate seminar, in which this project originated, and for his enthusiasm and encouragement. Finally, to my dissertation committee, especially the chair: I salute you. Your patience knows no bounds. iii ABSTRACT The 2008 publication of Paula J. Massood’s The Spike Lee Reader by Temple University Press legitimized Spike Lee as a focus for academic study. A writer, director, and actor, Lee produced the first of his twenty-eight feature films, She’s Gotta Have It, in 1986, and in the last twenty-seven years, countless interviews, movie reviews, children’s books, and unauthorized biographies about the filmmaker have entered the marketplace. Although there are several book-length studies on the Spike Lee Joint, Massood’s is the first to contextualize the filmmaker’s entire oeuvre within the framework of cinema studies. -
