The 1989 AMS summer conference on integral geometry and tomogra- phy at Humboldt State University, Arcata, California, was a lively successor to the 1984 AMS integral geometry conference. This later gathering saw a greater representation of applied mathematics as well as combinatorics. The interaction among conferees was remarkable: theorems announced during one lecture were used a few days later in another. Participants shared ideas, experiences, and data. Results in seemingly different fields were found to be manifestations of the same abstract principles. The papers in these proceed- ings represent lectures presented at the conference, results emanating from conference activities and reports from researchers who were not able to at- tend the conference but whose influence was significant nonetheless. All the papers in this volume were submitted in final form, and no versions will be submitted for publication elsewhere.

The pure mathematical articles in these proceedings are in areas as diverse as combinatorics, geometric inequalities, microlocal analysis, group theory, and harmonic analysis. Balker, Grinberg, and Kung explore the parallels be- tween the combinatorial Radon transform and the admissibility problem for the continuous Radon transform. The interplay between n-dimensional data and induced k-dimensional data occurs throughout integral geometry and to- mography. Goodey and Howard study this theme in the context of stochas- tic geometry: they investigate the k-dimensional processes induced by an n-dimensional stationary process. Lutwak gives some formulations of affine isoperimetric inequalities using a number of integral-geometric functionals. The techniques of microlocal analysis have become increasingly popular and successful in dealing with Radon transforms. Boman uses pseudodifferen- tial operators to understand the identification problem for X-ray transforms with general measures. Greenleaf and Uhlmann give a survey of the relevant microlocal machinery and show how it can be applied to admissibility and Sobolev estimate problems.

The interplay between theory, harmonic analysis, and Radon transforms is well represented in the proceedings. Ehrenpreis discusses the notion of Radon transform and its relationship to geometry and linear and nonlinear harmonic analysis. Helgason gives inversion and support theorems for the totally geodesic Radon transform on spaces of constant curvature.

XI xii PREFACE

Goldschmidt studies the Radon transform for symmetric forms on real pro- jective spaces. Tarabusi inverts the X-ray transform on both the real hyper- bolic plane and on locally finite trees. Gonzalez characterizes the range of the complex d-plane transform by a single partial differential operator. Bray and Solmon prove range theorems for the horocycle transform, and Orloff gives a support theorem for the K invariant horocycle transform on noncompact rank-one symmetric space using integral equations techniques.

Over the years tomography has broadened to include topics such as radia- tion dose planning [Cormack and Quinto], radar [MaaB], and partial differen- tial equations [Natterer]. The interplay between fields is remarkable. MaaB uses ideas in [Ehrenpreis] to prove injectivity of a transform in wideband radar; Natterer uses information about the attenuated Radon transform to prove uniqueness and stability for an inverse problem for the transport equa- tion; and Cormack and Quinto investigate the mathematics and physics of radiation dose planning using dual Radon transforms. Significant progress has occurred in X-ray tomography as well. Gri.i.nbaum solves a finite tomo- graphic problem using a model that incorporates scattering as well as absorp- tion. Faridani gives efficient X-ray sampling geometries using a new sampling theorem for multi-dimensional band-limited functions. Izen develops an in- version method for severely limited X-ray tomographic data in space, and Madych develops convolution formulas for complete and incomplete data problems. Solmon proves a necessary and sufficient condition for a function to be in the null space of the finite divergent beam transform.

The conference organizers, Leon Ehrenpreis, Fulton Gonzalez, Eric Grin- berg, and Todd Quinto, would like to thank the American Mathematical Society, the National Science Foundation, and the U.S. Army for their finan- cial support, without which this conference would not have been possible. In particular, we would like to thank Carole Kohanski and Donna Harmon, our liaisons with the AMS, for their patient help during the conference and their quick and efficient work producing these proceedings. The editors of these proceedings, Eric Grinberg and Todd Quinto, would like to thank the authors for submitting articles of such high quality and the referees for prompt, in- sightful reviews. Finally, we would like to thank the conference participants, who made the bureaucratic work worthwhile, and without whom the proceed- ings would have been rather slim.
