258 BOOK REVIEWS Michael R. Reder, ed. Conversations with Salman Rushdie. Jackson: U of Mississippi P, 2000. Pp. xvi, 238. $18.00 pb. The apparently inexorable obsession of journalist and literary critic with the life of Salman Rushdie means it is easy to find studies of this prolific, larger-than-life figure. While this interview collection, part of the Literary Conversations Series, indicates that Rushdie has in fact spo• ken extensively both before, during, and after, his period in hiding, "giving over 100 interviews" (vii), it also substantiates a general aware• ness that despite Rushdie's position at the forefront of contemporary postcolonial literatures, "his writing, like the author himself, is often terribly misjudged by people who, although familiar with his name and situation, have never read a word he has written" (vii). The oppor• tunity to experience Rushdie's unedited voice, interviews re-printed in their entirety as is the series's mandate, is therefore of interest to student, academic and reader alike. Editor Michael Reder has selected twenty interviews, he claims, as the "most in-depth, literate and wide-ranging" (xii). The scope is cer• tainly broad: the interviews, arranged in strict chronological order, cover 1982-99, encompass every geography, and range from those tak• en from published studies to those conducted with the popular me• dia. There is stylistic variation: question-response format, narrative accounts, and extensive, and often poetic, prose introductions along• side traditional transcripts. However, it is a little misleading to infer that this is a collection comprised of hidden gems. There is much here that is commonly known, and interviews taken from existing books or re-published from publications such as Kunapipi and Granta are likely to be available to anybody bar the most casual of enthusiasts. -

By FABIANA DALLA VALLE The Albanian poet Ismail Kadare, the philosopher Giorgio Agamben and the P(our) project are respectively the winners of the International Nonino Prize, the “Master of our time” and the “Nonino Risit d’Aur – Gold vine shoot” of the forty-third edition of the Nonino, born in 1975 to give value to the rural civilization. The jury presided by V.S. Naipaul, Nobel Laureate in Literature 2001, and composed by Adonis, John Banville, Ulderico Bernardi, Peter Brook, Luca Cendali, Antonio R. Damasio, Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie, James Lovelock, Claudio Magris, Norman Manea, Edgar Morin and Ermanno Olmi, has awarded the prestigious acknowledgements of the 2018 edition. Ismail Kadare, poet, novelist, essay writer and script writer born in Albania (he left his country as a protest against the communist regime which did not take any steps to allow the democratization of the country ndr.), for the prestigious jury of the Nonino is a «Bard fond and critical of his country, between historical realities and legends, which evoke grandeur and tragedies of the Balkan and Ottoman past and has created great narrations. An exile in Paris for more than twenty years “not to offer his services to tyranny”, he has refused the silence which is the evil’s half, often immersing his narration in imaginary worlds, becoming the witness of the horrors committed by totalitarianism and its inquisitors. ENGL 4431: Contemporary British and Irish Fiction Spring 2020 Course Description How have British writers responded to the legacy of two world wars, the end of empire and the Cold War, economic decline (coupled with globalization), and radical changes in racial and sexual politics? This course offers an introduction to contemporary British and Irish fiction in an era of profound political and economic change and social upheaval. We will focus on fiction (novels and at least one film) profoundly influenced by the shadow of war, by immigration from the former colonies, by dramatic shifts in gender relations and sexuality, by class conflict and deindustrialization, by the impact of global capitalism, by media obsessions with urban violence and the underclass, by the so-called war on terror after the events of 2001, and by the question of Ireland in relation to the imperial past and its place in the global present. In light of some of these vast historical transformations, how has British culture adapted to its uneasy geopolitical position? How does a nation that is often nostalgically obsessed with images of its past power and traditions produce literature that might imagine alternative, post-imperial futures? How have Irish writers negotiated that nation’s independence, the legacies of colonial history, and its place in a global economy? “Contemporary literature” is an evolving field, and in attending to how authors engage with the present, we will also explore how fiction helps imagine and shape present and future identities, national and global. The course will cover the period from the 1980s rise of Thatcherism and the New Right through the first decade of the twenty-first century. -

It means revisiting their work, certainly, but also, more carefully, studying how the impress of their authorship evolves over time, and what core elements remain that make them recognizably themselves. Of those authors writing today, Kazuo Ishiguro lends himself exceptionally well to rereading in part because his oeuvre, especially his novels, are so coherent. Featuring first-person narrators reflecting on the remains of their day, these protagonists struggle to come to terms with their participation in structures of harm, and do so with a formal complexity and tonal distance that suggests unreli- ability or a vexed relationship to their own place in the order of things. Ishiguro is also an impeccable re-reader, as the intertextuality of his prose suggests. He convincingly inhabits, as well as cleverly rewrites, existing genres such as the country house novel, the novel of manners, the English boarding school novel, the mystery novel, the bildung- sroman, science fiction, and, most recently, Arthurian fantasy. Artist, detective, pianist, clone: to read Ishiguro always entails rereading in relation to his own oeuvre, as well as to the literary canon. -

May 2020 Dear Student, You are enrolled in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition for the coming school year. Bowling Green High School has offered this course since 1983. I thought that I would tell you a little bit about the course and what will be expected of you. Please share this letter with your parents or guardians. A.P. Literature and Composition is a year-long class that is taught on a college freshman level. This means that we will read college level texts—often from college anthologies—and we will deal with other materials generally taught in college. You should be advised that some of these texts are sophisticated and contain mature themes and/or advanced levels of difficulty. In this class we will concentrate on refining reading, writing, and critical analysis skills, as well as personal reactions to literature. A.P. Literature is not a survey course or a history of literature course so instead of studying English and world literature chronologically, we will be studying a mix of classic and contemporary pieces of fiction from all eras and from diverse cultures. This gives us an opportunity to develop more than a superficial understanding of literary works and their ideas. Writing is at the heart of this A.P. course, so you will write often in journals, in both personal and researched essays, and in creative responses. You will need to revise your writing. I have found that even good students—like you—need to refine, mature, and improve their writing skills. You will have to work diligently at revising major essays. -

Postmodern Love, Postmodern Death and God-like Authors in Irish Fiction: The Case of John Banville Roberta Gefter Wondrich University of Trieste Abstract This article aims at exploring the crucial correlation between love (erosldesire) and writing, death and writing and God-like authorial strategies as a relevant feature of postmodernist fiction mainly as it unfolds in the work of Ireland's most important (postmodernist) novelist, John Banville. This issue is highly relevant in the context of postmodernism as, according to Brian McHale, postmodern fiction has thoroughly exploited both love and death not only as topics but essentially as formally relevant features of the novel, by systematically foregrounding the relation existing between author, characters and reader, al1 entangled in a web of love, seduction and deferred annihilation, and by transgressing the related ontological boundaries. In this regard, then, Banville's novels (notably the 'tetralogy of art', narnely The Book ofEvidence (1989), Ghosts (1993), Athena (1995) and The Untouchable (1998)) thoroughly explore and foregromd-probably for the first time in Irish writing-both the notion of love and desire as a creative activity, of textual narrative as necessarily seductive and, finally, the time-hoiioured equation of life with discourse/narration, thus recalling the problematic motif of the impossibility and necessity of discourse. In the context of Irish fiction, postmodernist literary strategies have not been practised too extensively in the last decades, while it is by now widely acknowledged that a great many of the main features of postmodernist writing had already been inaugurated by the titans of the protean Irish 'modernism': 1 am obviously thinking of Joyce-especially in Finnegan S Wake-and Flann O'Brien. -

The Revival of the Satiric Spirit in Contemporary British Fiction1 Luis Alberto Lázaro Lafuente University of Alcalá Satiric novels have traditionally been regarded as a minor form by many critics and scholars. Aristotle had already referred to the satirists as "the more trivial" poets who wrote about the actions of meaner~persons, in stark contrast to the "more serious-minded" epic poets who represented noble actions and the lives of noble people (1965: 35-36). This attitude has persisted throughout many centuries in the history of English literature. Even though satire enjoyed its golden age in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, especially with the poetry of such distinguished writers as Dryden or Pope, satiric compositions in prose did not really achieve the same high position2• When with time the novel became a well• established genre, it was mainly naturalistic fiction and psychological stories that commonly attained a prominent status among the literary critics, whereas the comic and satiric novel, with a few exceptions, was relegated to a status of popular prose on the fringe of the canon, or even outside it. Indeed, in the twentieth century, several prestigious authors have offered a rather gloomy picture of the state of novelistic satire. Robert C. Elliott, for instance, said in 1960 that the great literary figures of this century were not "preeminently satirists" (1970: 223); and Patricia Meyer Spacks, in her artide "Some Reflections on Satire" first published in 1968, even stated that satiric novel s by authors such I Some ideas oí this paper have already appeared in my essay "El espíritu satírico en la novela británica contemporánea: Menipo redivivo", included in the volume edited by Fernando Galván Már• genes y centros en la literatura británica actual. -

Postcolonial Text, Vol 9, No 1 (2014) On Not Yet Being Christian: J.M. Coetzee’s Slow Man and the Ethics of Being (Un)Interesting Craig Smith Independent Scholar Slow Man, J.M. Coetzee’s first Australian novel, has been widely perceived as somewhat of a non-event in an otherwise celebrated literary career. As Roman Silvani explains, the novel “got mixed reviews”1 upon its initial publication and subsequently “has not provoked a great number of literary critics to analyze it” (135), making it a marginal text in the Coetzeean canon. The relatively few extant commentaries on Slow Man are in broad agreement on two issues: on the one hand, it appears radically disconnected from the fiction Coetzee wrote before emigrating to Australia,2 and, on the other, it is anything but a fast-paced, stimulating novel. One might be tempted to suspect that there is a connection to be made here, and, indeed, critical opinion tends toward this conclusion. If, as Tim Mehigan contends, “Coetzee’s thematic concerns in the first novel published after his relocation to Australia bear no South African imprint, nor even a faint afterimage of South Africa” (“Slow Man” 192), the apparent correlative of this emerges in critical assessments of the novel that deem it to be “a slow book” (Silvani 135) that is less “successful” when contrasted with Coetzee’s other novels (Hayes 225). If the book’s initial minimal “momentum…is lost” (Hope) with the appearance in the novel of Coetzee’s familiar Australian authorial alter-ego, the “tiresome” and “tedious” (Banville) Elizabeth Costello, that loss of momentum has much to do with Slow Man’s apparent inability to engage with its readers’ emotional and critical sensibilities following its author’s relocation to an Australian setting that, in Slow Man at least, does not bring with it the contextual relevancy attendant to his South African fiction. -
