We gather together today on this great Feast of Pentecost to celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles two-thousand years ago, and the continued outpouring of the Holy Spirit on all of us as Church today! This is a great Feast Day! For the Apostles, everything changed with the Holy Spirit! What they were unable to do on their own and by themselves, suddenly they were able to do with the help of the Holy Spirit! Suddenly they realized the great help that Jesus and His Father had sent them in the Holy Spirit! As we gather for this Feast we ask God to send us the same Holy Spirit today so that we can live out our Faith! We do welcome all of our guests and visitors who join us for this celebration today. And tonight, with the praying of Evening Prayer, we do come to the end of our Easter season, and go back into Ordinary Time. We are entering back into Ordinary Time in the Seventh Week of Ordinary Time. As we mentioned last weekend, the Diocese has announced that Fr. Sean is being transferred effective May 28. This weekend, we take the opportunity to say “Thank you” to Fr. Sean with a reception following our 10 am Mass this morning. I am sure that I speak for all of us when I say how grateful we are for all that Fr. Sean has done for us these last couple of years. May God continue to bless you and guide you as you continue to serve His Church! We are also quickly coming up on the ordination to the transitional diaconate of our own Will Summerlin. William will be ordained a Deacon Saturday, June 2, at 11 am, in a special Mass at our Cathedral in Lafayette. Deacon Will is to give his first homily as a transitional deacon at our 5:30 pm Mass Sunday evening, June 3. We all look forward to hearing him for the first time! A reception for our new Deacon will follow immediately in the Parish Hall. Please RSVP this week if you are planning on joining us for Deacon Will’s reception. You can RSVP through the St. Maria Goretti website. We also want to congratulate all of our graduates from our Parish Family who are graduating from college, high school, 8th grade, and even our Kindergarten graduates! We are proud of all of you! We are looking forward to our kindergarteners doing a lot greater things down the road, but if a little encouragement is what they need right now, far be from me to deny them any glory that might inspire them to persevere in their pursuit of academic excellence! St. Maria Goretti’s 8th grade graduation takes place here this week at a special Mass on Wednesday evening at 7 pm in the main sanctuary. We especially congratulate several longtime Parish families who are graduating their last child or only child from our school. Thank you for your ongoing support of our school. Because of the Graduation Mass on Wednesday, there will not be a Wednesday evening 5:30 pm daily Mass this week. The last day of school for St. Maria Goretti is this Friday, May 25. This week we begin the actual scheduled photo sessions for the new Parish Pictorial Directory. Again, we really would like to have everyone’s picture in this new directory. Please schedule your session as soon as possible. It’s very easy for all of us to think that we don’t need to do this. But part of being active members in a Parish today means we really want to know you and have you involved in our community. This pictorial directory is a huge help with building community! Please take the time to come in and get your picture taken. We’ll give you a free 8 X 10 print of the picture you like the best. And you will get a free copy of the new directory and its online version when the project is completed. Please sign up today! There is a lot going on these days. Graduations, weddings, Confirmations, family reunions, and now the vacation season starts! As we enjoy this summer of 2018, let us also remember to stay committed to our Faith and especially our commitment to attending Mass on Sunday! We need this strength and this help that we receive from Jesus in the Eucharist most especially when there’s a lot going on. And these days certainly qualify for that category! In Christ, Fr. Kevin God’s gifts are never loans, they are deposits. Welcome! For more than 22 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you! God Bless you. —Father Kevin May 20, 2018 Pentecost St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church · Westfield, IN | 3 PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS Sweet Sendoff for Father Sean Join the Holy Name Society and the Altar Rosary Society in the Parish Hall this weekend, immediately after the 10 am Mass for sweet treats and refreshments as we celebrate Father Sean and his service to our Parish Family. • Saint Maria Goretti
Saint Maria Goretti Painting: “Saint Maria Goretti” Located in the Shrine Church Artist: Noah Buchanan [Permission granted to post article by Father Jacques Marie © Clairval Abbey] This past July 6th [year 2002] was the centenary of the passing away of Maria Goretti, whom Pope Pius XII at her canonization on June 26, 1950, called «the Agnes of the twentieth century.» God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God (1 Cor 1: 27-29). During a pilgrimage to the place of the martyrdom of the young saint, on September 29, 1991, Pope John Paul II remarked: «God chose, He glorified a simple young girl from the country, of modest origins. He glorified her with the power of His Spirit… Dearest brothers and sisters! Consider Maria Goretti… She has become a joy for the Church and a source of hope for us.» Maria was born on October 16, 1890, in Corinaldo, in the Ancone province of Italy, into a family poor in earthly goods, but rich in faith and virtues. Every day they had common prayer and the Rosary; on Sundays, Mass and Holy Communion. Maria was the third of seven children of Luigi Goretti and Assunta Carlini. On the day after her birth, she was baptized and consecrated to the Virgin Mary. She received the sacrament of Confirmation at the age of six.

  • St. Maria Goretti Feast: July 6
St. Maria Goretti Feast: July 6 Born on October 16, 1890 in Corinaldo, in the Ancona Province in Italy, her farmworker father moved his family to Ferrier di Conca, near Anzio. When he died of malaria, Maria's mother had to struggle to feed her children. Maria's mother, brothers, and sisters worked in the fields while she cooked, sewed, kept the house clean, and watched her youngest sister Teresa. Though the family's circumstances were extremely difficult, they were very close and loved God. On July 5, 1902, Maria was sitting outside the steps of her home sewing her 18- year-old brother or neighbor -it is unclear which - Alessandro's shirt while he threshed beans in the barnyard. As she concentrated on her sewing, Alessandro surprised her and grabbed her from her steps. When he tried to rape her, Maria cried that it was a mortal sin and warned he would go to hell. When Alessandro persisted, she fought him and screamed, "No! It is a sin! God does not want it!" At her words, Alessandro began to choke her and she said she would rather die than submit. Upon hearing her words, Alexander pulled out a knife and stabbed her eleven times. When she attempted to reach the door, he stabbed her three more times then fled. Teresa woke to the sounds of her sister's cries and began to cry. Maria's family returned home and found her bleeding on the floor. They quickly took her to the nearest hospital in Nettuno, where she underwent surgery without anesthesia.
