It happened 20 years ago on September 11, 2011, here in Washington at the Pentagon, in New York City at the Twin Towers and in the open fields of Pennsylvania. It happened once again less than a week ago in Afghanistan, where 13 young men and women (and with them many others seeking freedom and dignity), were struck down and killed in cold blood by followers of the “Covenant of death.” As Christians, we are EASTER PEOPLE, and we know and believe that death does not have and will never have the last word. BE STRONG, FEAR NOT! HERE IS YOUR GOD, HE COMES WITH VINDICATION; WITH DIVINE RECOMPENSE HE COMES TO SAVE YOU. The prophet Isaiah also denounced the “Covenant of death” (Isaiah 28: 15,18) and summoned his people to have faith in the Lord, as the only hope. Isaiah lived in very crucial times: the nation of Israel was about to be swallowed up by powerful alliances all around. Israel, a very small nation but in a strategic location, joined one of these alliances to survive. But Isaiah, one of the most powerful prophets of the Old Testament, smelled the trap and openly opposed his faithless king and asked him to trust in God.

  • Saint Maria Goretti
Saint Maria Goretti Painting: “Saint Maria Goretti” Located in the Shrine Church Artist: Noah Buchanan [Permission granted to post article by Father Jacques Marie © Clairval Abbey] This past July 6th [year 2002] was the centenary of the passing away of Maria Goretti, whom Pope Pius XII at her canonization on June 26, 1950, called «the Agnes of the twentieth century.» God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God (1 Cor 1: 27-29). During a pilgrimage to the place of the martyrdom of the young saint, on September 29, 1991, Pope John Paul II remarked: «God chose, He glorified a simple young girl from the country, of modest origins. He glorified her with the power of His Spirit… Dearest brothers and sisters! Consider Maria Goretti… She has become a joy for the Church and a source of hope for us.» Maria was born on October 16, 1890, in Corinaldo, in the Ancone province of Italy, into a family poor in earthly goods, but rich in faith and virtues. Every day they had common prayer and the Rosary; on Sundays, Mass and Holy Communion. Maria was the third of seven children of Luigi Goretti and Assunta Carlini. On the day after her birth, she was baptized and consecrated to the Virgin Mary. She received the sacrament of Confirmation at the age of six.

  • St. Maria Goretti Feast: July 6
St. Maria Goretti Feast: July 6 Born on October 16, 1890 in Corinaldo, in the Ancona Province in Italy, her farmworker father moved his family to Ferrier di Conca, near Anzio. When he died of malaria, Maria's mother had to struggle to feed her children. Maria's mother, brothers, and sisters worked in the fields while she cooked, sewed, kept the house clean, and watched her youngest sister Teresa. Though the family's circumstances were extremely difficult, they were very close and loved God. On July 5, 1902, Maria was sitting outside the steps of her home sewing her 18- year-old brother or neighbor -it is unclear which - Alessandro's shirt while he threshed beans in the barnyard. As she concentrated on her sewing, Alessandro surprised her and grabbed her from her steps. When he tried to rape her, Maria cried that it was a mortal sin and warned he would go to hell. When Alessandro persisted, she fought him and screamed, "No! It is a sin! God does not want it!" At her words, Alessandro began to choke her and she said she would rather die than submit. Upon hearing her words, Alexander pulled out a knife and stabbed her eleven times. When she attempted to reach the door, he stabbed her three more times then fled. Teresa woke to the sounds of her sister's cries and began to cry. Maria's family returned home and found her bleeding on the floor. They quickly took her to the nearest hospital in Nettuno, where she underwent surgery without anesthesia.

Lives of Saints 1931 - 1957 Feastday: 6th April I was born in Fiobbio di Albino, Italy, in 1931. I was the eldest of eight children, and my family was poor. As a young girl, I was trained as a seamstress, and at the age of 15, I started to work in a textile factory. At the same time, I did what I could in the Parish. I helped with the Mass everyday and was active in the Female Youth Section of ‘Catholic Action’. In 1947, I participated in a pilgrimage to Rome for the beatification of Maria Goretti. I greatly admired Maria Goretti and I tried to imitate her in many ways. Like her, I lived the virtues in a simple way, and on a daily basis, at home and at work. Like her, I lived the same life of hard poverty and tried to show the same strength in bearing sacrifices. Like her I deplored sin. I lived a humble life, led by a profound faith in God and the Virgin Mary, I trusted in the teachings of the Church and I zealously worked for the Seminary where priests train, and for the missions. I did what I could, served as a catechist, helped the sick and I supported Catholic associations. I “May I never allow made a private vow of chastity to God, and considered myself even the religious life, but continued to live at home to help my smallest mother take care of the remaining children, since my father was unable to work. People got to know about my compromise with spiritual progress after my death, because I always kept a sin, whether in book in which I wrote down my resolutions and my dress, speech, inspirations.
