Based on the classic 1989 film, Westerberg High is ruled by a posse of mean girls: Heather, Heather and Heather, the hottest and cruelest girls in all of Ohio. When misfit Veronica rejects their evil regime for the dark and sexy new guy, J.D., their relationship starts racking up a body count. From the writers of “Desperate Housewives” and “Bat Boy” comes this explosive new musical. Critics have praised Heathers: The Musical as “Sassy, sexy, and oh so smart! Heathers deserves to run with the popular crowd!” — David Cote, Time Out New York; “A rowdy guilty pleasure!” — Ben Brantley, New York Times; and “Heathers still cliques…Ingenious, naughty and very funny!” — Elisabeth Vincentelli, New York Post. Directed by Cynthia Levin and Missy Koonce, the play features Katie Karel as Veronica Sawyer; Molly Denninghoff as Heather Chandler; Colleen Grate as Heather McNamara; Chioma Anyanwu as Heather Duke; Shon Ruffin as Martha Dunnstock; Teddy Trice as Ram Sweeney; Jacob Aaron Cullum as Kurt Kelly; Thomas Delgado as J.D.; Vincent Onofrio Monachino as Ram’s Dad, Bud Dean, Coach Ripper; Val Fagan as Ms. Fleming, Veronica’s Mom; Mike Ott as Kurt’s Dad, Veronica’s Dad, Principal Gowan; and Josh Atkins, Sara Kennedy, Molliann McCulley and Zachrey York as the Ensemble. • About Content Advisory
In 1988 the film version ofHeathers , a black comedy by Daniel Waters and directed by Michael ABOUT Lehman, was released. It starred a very young Winona Ryder (whose agent asked her not to take the role) as Veronica, a brilliant teenage outcast elevated to the lofty heights of the Heathers, Westerberg High School’s queen bees. But Veronica quickly abandons the narcissistic Heathers to play Bonnie and Clyde with J.D. (Christian Slater), a charismatic yet unstable high school misfit. Caught in a struggle between mindless violence and impotent goodness, Veronica must come up with another option, or literally die trying. The film was critically successful; the satire and dark honesty struck a chord with critics, so of course it was a box office flop. However, whenHeathers was released to VHS in 1989, it found an audience, and has since become a landmark teen angst film. When approached about making the film into a stage musical, Laurence O’Keefe, writer of Bat Boy The Musical, had concerns. The film was gorgeously dark and violent, which doesn’t always play well to Broadway houses – Sweeney Todd, for example, is always a critical delight but mediocre at the box office. “We have a hard choice”, O’Keefe said. “… stay true to the dark heart of the movie and risk alienating Broadway audiences, or soften the edges for theatergoers’ tastes and dilute the honesty that made the film iconic in the first place.” O’Keefe and the Heathers team were able to blend the dark edges into something a bit more palatable for theatre-goers, without losing the truth of the story and create a piece that resonated with teenagers, and those who had ever been teenagers.
