Canada i I would like to dedicate this thesis to my parents, Brian and Sandi Sissons my brother Darren Sissons. ii Abstract Elsie Gregory MacGill: Engineering the Future and Building Bridges for Canadian Women, 1918-1980 Crystal Sissons Supervisor University of Ottawa 2008 Professor Ruby Heap This thesis is a feminist case study of the public life and experiences of pioneering Canadian woman engineer, Elsie Gregory MacGill. Earning her undergraduate degree in electrical engineering at the University of Toronto in 1927, she then became the first woman in North America to obtain a Master's degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Michigan in 1929. In 1938, she was appointed Chief Aeronautical Engineer at Canadian Car and Foundry in Fort William, Ontario (presently Thunder Bay), achieving celebrity status during the war for her work at the company. MacGill later established herself as a key social reformer and feminist activist. Between the 1950s and 1980s she was actively involved in the Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs (CFBPWC), served on the Royal Commission on the Status of Women (RCWS), and was a founding member of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women (NAC). This thesis discusses MacGill's training and career in engineering at a time when women's access to this male-dominated profession was extremely limited. She devoted years of dedicated service to her profession. She strongly believed that engineers needed to reach out beyond their field and interact with the larger Canadian society. However, MacGilFs firm belief in the principle of equality led her to challenge her profession's iii ability to attract and retain women; after the war, she thus became a public advocate for women in the profession, and served as a role model and mentor. This thesis also examines MacGill's multidimensional feminism, which is difficult to label. It was certainly shaped by her experiences as a professional engineer. In this respect, this thesis offers important insights into the links between engineering and feminism. Acknowledgements This thesis was first contemplated while discussing the possibilities of exploring the MacGill Fonds at the National Library and Archives of Canada with Dr. Ruby Heap in the spring of 2003. At the time, I was still residing in Thunder Bay, Ontario, which in fact, has an interesting link to Elsie MacGill, as she worked there during the Second World War, at which time it was known under the names of Fort William, Ontario and Port Arthur, Ontario respectively. It was thus with enthusiasm that I contemplated the opportunity to further elaborate on the life of a Canadian woman who had also been a temporary resident of the region. In September 2003,1 began work and research with Dr. Heap towards a Masters degree on Elsie MacGill's work on the Royal Commission on the Status of Women, and in September 20041 began work on the current doctoral dissertation with Dr. Heap. To Dr. Heap I owe immense gratitude for her guidance, support and motivation and friendship throughout the duration of my graduate studies at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Heap also allowed me the opportunity to work concurrently as the Program Manager of the University of Ottawa's Women in Engineering Research Group (UOWERG). This opportunity allowed for additional training and experience as well as financial aid to my studies. Moreover, the opportunity allowed for important interdisciplinary work and an opportunity to link historical studies to contemporary research problems. I would also like to thank Professors Ann Denis, Janice Ahola-Sidway, and Monique Frize for their encouragement throughout my studies and work with the team. Thanks also to Debra Hauer for her support and friendship.     3/22/2018 The Elsie Initiative on Women in Peace Operations | Prime Minister of Canada The Elsie Initiative on Women in Peace Operations Vancouver, British Columbia ‑ November 15, 2017 Through our feminist foreign policy, Canada is demonstrating its deep commitment to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment around the world. In 2015, the United Nations (UN) Security Council adopted Resolution 2242, which noted the substantial link between women’s meaningful involvement in peace operations and the achievement of long-term, sustainable peace. The resolution set targets to double the current rate of women’s participation of 3.7 percent of military peacekeepers and 9.5 percent of police peacekeepers by 2020. However, despite broad agreement that their increased participation would contribute to the eectiveness of UN peace operations, the percentage of women deployed in uniform has only increased by 0.2 percent. That is why Canada will launch the Elsie Initiative on Women in Peace Operations. Canada will work with the UN and interested member states to develop innovative approaches to overcome the barriers to women’s meaningful participation in peace operations. Canada will pilot these approaches with a small number of countries that share Canada’s ambition. The Elsie Initiative will: Support the development of a systematic approach to deploy more women in peace operations. Design tailored technical assistance support for countries that contribute peacekeepers to ensure the right conditions are in place for the deployment of women. Provide assistance to designated UN missions to improve their ability to support and benet from women’s increased participation in peace operations.

    CanadianStories of Canadian Innovations Innovation McIntosh Red Apple The McIntosh Red is a world-famous apple that was discovered in Ontario in 1811. John McIntosh, a settler from New York, found apple-tree seedlings as he cleared brush on his Dundela farm, near Morrisburg on the St Lawrence River. McIntosh transplanted the trees and one bore delicious fruit: a deep-red apple with tart flavour and tender white flesh. Over the decades, the McIntosh family propagated their unique apple by grafting scions, or cuttings, to other fruit trees in their orchard. Allan McIntosh, John’s son, continued this work. He established a McIntosh Red nursery in 1870 and sold trees to other orchardists. By the early 1900s, the McIntosh Red was popular across North America. Apple breeders, such as W. T. Macoun at the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa, used the hardy McIntosh Red to create new varieties including Lobo, Cortland, Empire, and Spartan. Farm botanist and artist Faith Fyles recorded some of this breeding work in beautiful watercolours. And while new apple varieties like Gala and Honeycrisp have challenged the McIntosh Red’s supremacy, the McIntosh apple remains a favourite both for cooking and for eating fresh. Notably, the McIntosh Red inspired the name of the Macintosh computer. Possibly the largest flotilla of C- 47's and other DC-3 variants since the Second World War will cross the Atlantic in late May to take part in a re-enactment of the first stage of the D-Day invasion. A total of 18 “Daks” will fly to Scotland for the 75th anniversary of the most pivotal battle of the war. The 18 U.S.-based aircraft will be joined by 17 European aircraft for the flypast, which will include parachute jumps by reenactors using round canopies. Many of the aircraft took part in the original raid, including "That’s All Brother", the plane that led the assault and was the first one over the beaches. The aircraft, which flew at Sun ’n Fun, was rescued from a scrap heap and refurbished by the Commemorative Air Force over the past three years.
