The announcement from Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) will see Stagecoach Metrolink taking over the 37km system and the associated infrastructure. Innovative science, engineering and technology are as fundamental to Scotland’s future economic prosperity as they have been to its economic development over the past two centuries, driving growth in the fast-changing world of the 21st century. They are a major element of Scotland’s heritage, culture and well-being, and our prospects as a successful nation in the 21st century will require new generations of ambitious young scientists and engineers to drive forward innovative technologies. Scotland also needs a scientifically-literate population of well-informed and responsible citizens to engage in driving forward not only our economic ambitions but also those of sustainability, the improvement of our natural and living environments, and the delivery of our climate change targets.
