Michelle: The Rebellious Soul Musical Soundtrack, 2013. My Life, 02:54. DailyDoseNY. Album Review: K. Michelle “Rebellious Soul” If you’re a fan of VH1’s “Love and Hip Hop Atlanta,” then you just gotta love that K. Michelle. One of the most controversial cast members, K. Michelle has been hard at work recording her studio album “Rebellious Soul.” The album’s title pretty much sums up the K. Michelle we all know and love. With her big personality and even bigger mouth, K. Michelle really did this one! K. Michelle begins the album with “My Life” featuring rap artist Meek Mill. With its raw take on the everyday life growing up as a youth from the hood, this song is one fans may definitely find themselves humming to as they reminisce on their own upbringings. On one of the verses, K offers explanation as to why she’s such a “rebellious soul” saying “all my life I been struggling and stressing, that’s why I come up in the b**ch with aggression.” She says in the chorus “I know about it, don’t judge if you don’t know nothing ’bout it,” which is just a way to say unless you’ve been through it, who are you to judge? “Damn,” the second song on the album, K revealed in a recent radio interview, was written for football star Chad Ochocinco. K says the song was just saying “I ain’t got time for that!” “I Don’t Like Me” is a song that looks deep into the thoughts of a woman. The songs speaks from the point of view of a damaged woman. It’s a cry for help. It shows how the words and thoughts of others effect people’s self esteem in a negative way. The lyrics of this song will touch the hearts of those going through issues with self perception. “Can’t Raise A Man” might just be the breakup anthem of years to come. Ladies can easily picture themselves with their wine glasses sitting alone with dim lighting singing right along with the words. The song has the feel of a best friend or sister figure speaking to a young girl trying everything to change the man she’s with. K offers this advice to the ladies, because so many women give up and deal with so much to be with a grown a** boy. “V.S.O.P.” (Very Special Old Pale) was K’s hit single off the album. Definitely a club banger this one is. The song explains the perfect date night for a budding couple. With all the right things for the night to set the mood, how could you not fall in love listening to this song? This is one of those songs that you’d play in your head during that very special kiss. “Pay My Bills” finally delivers that sexually free K. Michelle us Love and Hip Hop Atlanta fans know and love. As soon as the song starts you get X rated flavor that only K. Michelle can deliver. It’s like her naughty is a special kind of naughty. K sings “Imma f**k you like I’m tryna pay bills” in the chorus. K schools ladies on how to get the bills paid the quick, easy and down right nasty way! “Sometime ” is a song of reflection. This song really speaks to the fans. K seems to be one of those friends that always got her nose in your business, but only because she has your best interest at heart. Listeners might sit and say “this song got me feeling like K talking right to me.” The song ends with a comedic relief to the advice offered with a “Coochie Symphony.” That one you just have to hear for yourself! “Ride Out” is one of those songs you listen to when you out at the club and you see your partner with somebody else. K tells that guy “you gon’ be mad when another n*gga show up and show out” and she means it. Sounds like K is definitely somebody you don’t want to cross. “Hate On Her” tells a story of a broken hearted girl who has to sit back and see her man with another love. But she continuously says “I can’t hate on her,” because she just knows the type of guy she’s dealing with. K just feels like why hate on the next one, that’s not who I’m upset with. “When I Get A Man” is a promise to the next guy K. Michelle falls for. She wants the next guy to know that she’s all for him. The man is definitely going to love her and she’s determined to make sure of that. “A Mother’s Prayer” is written for K’s son Chase. She prays for her son to never have to go through any heartache or troubles. K. Michelle inspires her son to do everything he puts his mind to and to know that the mother is behind them 110%.

  • K. Michelle Flaunts Her Versatility at 'More Issues Than Vogue' Album Release Concert in New York City
March 31, 2016 K. Michelle Flaunts Her Versatility at 'More Issues Than Vogue' Album Release Concert in New York City Memphis multi-hyphenate K. Michelle celebrated the release of her third album, More Issues Than Vogue, with a full concert on Tuesday night (March 29) at New York City's Webster Hall. Sporting a black one-piece that would make Wonder Woman jealous, the singer commanded the stage, proving she’s more than a reality TV personality. That’s not to say her set wasn’t loaded with outrageous soundbites. “You may have broken up with him, but you forgot that you also broke up with that dick,” she lamented about no-good lovers in between songs. Before launching into the piano-driven slow jam, she also said, “On my nightstand, I have my dildo, a Bible and my pills -- everything that keeps me calm. That’s where “Nightstand” came from.” She also started the party with the T-Pain assisted jam "Mindful" and threw it back to her 2013 debut with the raunchy "Pay My Bills." The evening carried its more somber moments, as well. At one point, K. Michelle gave her back-up singers the chance to shine, allowing them each to sing a solo as they banded together for an impressive medley that included Adele’s “Hello” and Chaka Khan’s “Ain’t Nobody.” She also noted how she took pride in hand-picking each backup vocalist. She even delivered earlier fan favorites like "Ain't You" off Issues as well as "Maybe I Should Call" off her 2014 effort Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart? The most vulnerable moment of the evening came when K.

  • I'm Every (Black) Woman: Negotiating Intersectionality in the Music Industry
I'M EVERY (BLACK) WOMAN: NEGOTIATING INTERSECTIONALITY IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY Jacqueline P. Hudson A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2021 Committee: Katherine Meizel, Advisor Lee Nickoson Graduate Faculty Representative Radhika Gajjala Angela Nelson © 2021 Jacqueline P. Hudson All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Katherine Meizel, Advisor Black women singers have often been lauded and emulated for their musical talents, but also have been regulated to the lower level of societal hierarchy in the music industry. They had to endure racialized and gendered power structures in the field that positioned white men at the top where they had the authority to make music-industry related decisions, white women who achieved success often on the backs of black women’s labor, and black men who took credit in the music-creating process. While this is standard in the music industry for quite some time, there has been long history of this hierarchy in social phenomena such as the institution of slavery, the women’s suffrage movement, the Civil Rights Movement, and the second/third/ fourth-wave feminist movement. In both the music industry and social history, black women had to create and maintain agency against these power structures. This dissertation explores how the concept of intersectionality, coined by critical race theorist Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989, informs the way black women singers navigated their identity through the music industry. Incorporating historical context of the social phenomena that was mentioned above, this dissertation also takes a cross section of black women singers from both different eras and genres of music (Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton, Nina Simone, Janet Jackson, Janelle Monáe, and Lizzo) in illustrating the narrative on how that they used their personal intersectional experiences in the music industry to fight against racism and sexism in the music industry.

  • Streeter Is One of Mainstream R&B's Secret Weapons
www.sevynstreeter.com www.facebook/sevynstreeter www.twitter/sevyn Instagram: @sevyn BIOGRAPHY “Music is emotional. Your job is to make people feel something. The best way to do that is to sing and speak from something they’ve personally been through. That’s where I write from,” Amber ‘Sevyn’ Streeter says. Sevyn Streeter has cemented herself as a rising musical sensation. Having most recently dropped a new collection of music titled Shoulda Been There Pt. 1, Streeter takes her fans through a musical journey of 13 tracks, which include the Chris Brown assisted single, “Don’t Kill The Fun,” plus additional hits “Boomerang” with Hit-Boy and the lead title track, “Shoulda Been There” featuring B.o.B.(https://youtu.be/nFzodv8Orqs). With her full-length album in-the-works, Sevyn refers to Shoulda Been There Pt.1 as “the prelude or an appetizer before the main course”. She adds, “If I experience it, I write it, and I make a song out of it. And that’s what these records are…so I just kinda want to let y’all into the last year and a half of my life and let’s talk about it.” Streeter joined forces with longtime friend and co-collaborator, Chris Brown, on her smash single, “Don’t Kill The Fun”. The upbeat, party-starting track is being celebrated as one of the most “feel-good” songs of 2015. The colorful companion video- which was directed by and features Chris Brown – has over 8 million views on YouTube to date (https://youtu.be/WvOo-SYN0mY).
