Beading workshop and discussion with Anita This beading workshop will introduce some beading techniques. Every artesian has their own tips and style of work. For this demonstration Anita will show some examples of work and introduce the applique or 2 needle flat stitch as used to make hair ties, applique bead onto clothing etc. Supplies: For this workshop if you want to start a project to create something you can select something you might like to bead on. You can also use a piece of felt or canvas if you just want to practice. You will need beads preferably all the same size; 2 needles one that is a little smaller than the beads you are using and nylon thread. Nylon is recommended as it is strongest, but you can also use whatever you have. Beads should be available in places like Michaels, Joann’s Fabrics, Walmart or online. Nymo is a brand that is widely used. The thread comes in different thicknesses, O, OO, B, D etc. Sizes of glass seed beads typically used range from around size 10 to 13. The smaller the number the larger the bead. Size 13 are the smallest available with a wide selection of colors. The image to the right is a beaded hair tie. You would need a button if you would like a button for the center. These can also be all beaded without a center button. The 2 needle flat stitch is used for this project. The beads are size 13 Czech cut glass beads. The back is leather, and the piece is sandwiched together with an edging stitch to finish it. The baby moccasins pictured to the left show beadwork that is the 2 needle flat stitch and the lighter case is an example of Peyote stitch. Both of these used size 13 beads. 2 There are quite a few different YouTube or other videos available. The following are just a few links. Once you start looking you will see many other available links. This could also be used to do something like a Chapstick cover and a pen for example. Pay attention to the bridge (area where you are stepping up to the next row) area on your work. It will be an area where you might get confused. https://youtu.be/2g0i0VxWt7A The same artist demonstrates how to make a pattern in the project continuing on from the first video with this next link. https://youtu.be/pcFnZ6cDU8s The artist also shows how to do the bottom of the case in this next video https://youtu.be/ixdqilyTGvs so that it looks like a beaded bottom. *note I generally use a piece of leather or something sturdy to put around the lighter case and then you can remove the lighter once it is used up and replace it easier.
