Continuing my Jostojoo journey with The Road, I have followed my passion for new influences across borders from northern Iran to Serbia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Morocco and Indonesia. I continue to be delighted by the ability of musicians from disparate backgrounds to collaborate, energize and inspire each other in creating innovative arrangements that joyfully transcend genre. My search for common threads and powerful traditional melodies remains a driving force behind my music and when I can use elements from my Iranian heritage such as the poetry of Rumi to reimagine a song from another culture, time and place, my emotions soar. The freedom of musical expression sustains me; when there is music there is community, there is acceptance, there is life. 1 A Thousand Strings 5:11 2 Romance 5:22 3 Do, Don’t 5:08 4 Flaming Sun 4:59 5 High Sea 3:31 6 Little Gem 3:41 7 STARDUST 5:12 8 Navaii 2:29 9 Pledge 4:44 10 Hunstman 4:13 11 Those Eyes 4:49 innova is the label of the American Composers Forum. © Banyan Tree Productions (ASCAP), 2015. ABSTRACT Iranian documentary filmmakers negotiate their relationship with power centers every step of the way in order to open creative spaces and make films. This dissertation covers their professional activities and their films, with particular attention to 1997 to 2014, which has been a period of tremendous expansion. Despite the many restrictions on freedom of expression in Iran, especially between 2009 and 2013, after the uprising against dubious election practices, documentary filmmakers continued to organize, remained active, and produced films and distributed them. In this dissertation I explore how they engaged with different centers of power in order to create films that are relevant -
