The Beetle Fauna of Dominica, Lesser Antilles (Insecta: Coleoptera): Diversity and Distribution

Peck Department of Biology, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa, Ontario K1S 5B6, Canada stewart_peck@carleton. ca Abstract. The beetle fauna of the island of Dominica is summarized. It is presently known to contain 269 genera, and 361 species (in 42 families), of which 347 are named at a species level. Of these, 62 species are endemic to the island. The other naturally occurring species number 262, and another 23 species are of such wide distribution that they have probably been accidentally introduced and distributed, at least in part, by human activities. Undoubtedly, the actual numbers of species on Dominica are many times higher than now reported. This highlights the poor level of knowledge of the beetles of Dominica and the Lesser Antilles in general. Of the species known to occur elsewhere, the largest numbers are shared with neighboring Guadeloupe (201), and then with South America (126), Puerto Rico (113), Cuba (107), and Mexico-Central America (108). The Antillean island chain probably represents the main avenue of natural overwater dispersal via intermediate stepping-stone islands. The distributional patterns of the species shared with Dominica and elsewhere in the Caribbean suggest stages in a dynamic taxon cycle of species origin, range expansion, distribution contraction, and re-speciation. One important foundation for the conservation of biodiversity on islands is an inventory of endemic species. In the absence of a comprehensive inventory, conservation effort often defaults to a focus on the better-known and more conspicuous species (typically mammals and birds). Although this component of island biota often needs such conservation attention, such focus may mean that less conspicuous endemic species (especially invertebrates) are neglected and suffer high rates of loss. In this paper, we review the available literature and online resources to compile a list of endemic species that is as comprehensive as possible for the 137 km2 oceanic Christmas Island, an Australian territory in the north-eastern Indian Ocean. -

O Brasil é considerado uma das nações mais ricas em biodiversidade de insetos, porém possui uma grande desigualdade de estudos na área de zoologia ao longo de suas regiões geográficas, devido a desigual divisão de recursos e de mão de obra especializada. A falta de coleções zoológicas importantes na região nordeste, as dificuldades em obter os recursos necessários para arcar com os altos custos de manutenção destas coleções e a falta de divulgação de suas bases de dados são pontos chaves das causas dessa desigualdade. O objetivo deste trabalho é divulgar a lista das espécies da família Cerambicydae, incluindo 12 holótipos, presentes na coleção entomológica Professor Johann Becker do Museu de Zoologia da Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (MZFS) e fazer o primeiro registro da espécie Chrysoprasis airi Napp & Martins para o Brasil. Foram contabilizados mil e sessenta e quatro espécimes de Cerambycidae distribuídas em cento e cinqüenta e quatro espécies, cento e nove gêneros, quarenta e cinco tribos e três subfamílias, depositadas no MZFS. -

GAHA N (1895 : 125) la met dans Hypsioma Serville, en indiquant quil ne dout e pas que cette espèce (grisea) ait été placée par leurs descripteurs dans le genre Hypomia Thomson par inattention, et quil « suspecte quelle (grisea) serait identique à la précédente (picticornis Bates) » . -

Ninety seven species are recorded for the first time in Maranhão. The majority of the species belongs to two or more morphoclimatic domains of Brazil. New species described of Lamiinae: Punctozotroctes inhamum sp. nov. (Acanthoderini) from Caxias; Oncideres mirador sp. nov. from Mirador and Oncideres coites sp. nov. (Onciderini) from Caxias. Les clés de détermination des larves connues d’Ibidionini, d’Onciderini et de tous les cérambycides des Antilles françaises sont également fournies. Key for the determination of known Ibidionini, Onciderini, and even of all cerambycids larvae of French West Indies are yielded. Key-words : Coleoptera, Cerambycidae, larvae, new descriptions, French West Indies. _______________ INTRODUCTION La faune des longicornes des Petites Antilles est relativement pauvre. La Guadeloupe, par exemple, ne compte que 64 espèces connues (TOUROULT & CHALUMEAU, en prép.). L’intérêt de cette faune insulaire réside dans son fort taux d’endémisme : 57 % des espèces sont inféodées aux Petites Antilles. Les longicornes font partie des coléoptères les mieux connus de l’archipel, grâce notamment aux travaux de Charles GAHAN (1895) et d’André VILLIERS (1980).
