Thupten Jinpa's Presentation October 2-5, 2014 | Keystone, Colorado, USA Plenary Session | Room: Castle Peak | 11:00am, October 3, 2014 Translation with Sarah Harding, Thupten Jinpa, Roger Jackson, Elijah Ary Thupten Jinpa (Institute of Tibetan Classics) Thupten Jinpa, PhD, received his early education as a monk and obtained the Geshe Lharam degree from the Shartse College of Ganden Monastic Uni- versity, South India. In addition, Jinpa holds a B.A. Honors in philosophy and a PhD in religious stud- ies, both from Cambridge University. He taught at Ganden monastery and worked also as a research fellow in Eastern religions at Girton College, Cam- bridge University. Jinpa is an adjunct professor at the Faculty of Religious Studies at McGill Univer- sity, Montreal. Associated with the Center for Compassion and Altruism Re- Thupten search and Education (CCARE) at the School of Medicine, Stanford University, he is the main author of CCARE’s Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT) program. Currently the board chair, Jinpa has been a core member of the Mind and Life Institute, the founder and president of the Institute of Tibetan Classics Jinpa’s and the general editor for The Library of Tibetan Classics. Since 1985 he has been the principal English translator to H.H.the Dalai Lama. Jinpa’s published works include, in addition to translations of numerous books by the Dalai Lama, Songs of Spiritual Experience (co-authored), Self, Reality and Reason in Presentation Tibetan Philosophy: Tsongkhapa’s Quest for the Middle View, as well as Mind Training:The Great Collection, and The Book of Kadam: The Core Texts, the last two being part of The Library of Tibetan Classics. His Tibetan publica- tions include Chos kyi snang ba gsar pa (A New Light on Dharma), a first ever introduction to Buddhism in vernacular Tibetan, a comprehensive modern Ti- betan grammar entitled bod skad kyi brda sprod gsar bsgrigs smra sgo’i lde mig (A Modern Tibetan Grammar, Key Opening the Door of Speech), as well as a series of essays as introductions to the critical Tibetan editions of The Library of Tibetan Classics (bod kyi gtsug lag gces btus pod phreng). Most recently he translated (with Donald Lopez, Jr.) Grains of Gold: Tales of a Cosmopolitan Traveler by Gendun Chopel (University of Chicago Press). “What is best in any book is translatable – any real insight or human sentiment.” Ralph Waldo Emerson “With respect to the approach to translating the sublime dharma, undertake this in a way that does not violate the meaning and, at the same time, is appealing to [sensibilities of] the Tibetan language.” • Word order and syntax – Unless resulting in error, sensibilities of Tibetan priority • Integrity of verse must be preserved • Words with multiple meanings e.g. གོa་ཏམ་ ཀོa་ཤི་ཀ should not be reduced to one Tibetan translation • Names of places, animals and flora – where creating neologisms causes more confusions retain the original • Grammatical particles, e.g. prepositions, intensifiers • Synonyms Development of indigenous study aids: • Summary Points - བsས་དོན། • Scholarly commentaries - འgེལ་པ། Invention of ས་བཅད་ “outline” or text- template system • Idiosyncratic approach to translation – using distinct local vernaculars, excessive literal approach, lack of harmonization of old and new terminologies • Misunderstanding literal meaning of synonyms, mistakes in word divisions, and blind guesswork • Ignorance of mythologies, especially of the Puranas – e.g. Sarasvati should be མཚ་bང་l་མོ་ not དbངས་ཅན་མ་ (which is Svarasita) • Reverse reading of etymology ཡེ་ཤེས་ “primordial wisdom” yག་r་ “hand seal” • Faithfulness to the source (rigor, literalness) • Accessibility in the target language (flexibility, creative appropriation) • Allegiance to the reader • to the cultural context of the text • being true to the translator himself .

  • Early Buddhist Metaphysics: the Making of a Philosophical Tradition
    EARLY BUDDHIST METAPHYSICS This book provides a philosophical account of the major doctrinal shift in the history of early Theravada tradition in India: the transition from the earliest stratum of Buddhist thought to the systematic and allegedly scholastic philosophy of the Pali Abhidhamma movement. Conceptual investigation into the development of Buddhist ideas is pursued, thus rendering the Buddha’s philosophical position more explicit and showing how and why his successors changed it. Entwining comparative philosophy and Buddhology, the author probes the Abhidhamma’s shift from an epistemologically oriented conceptual scheme to a metaphysical worldview that is based on the concept of dhamma. She does so in terms of the Aristotelian tradition and vis-à-vis modern philosophy, exploiting Western philo- sophical literature from Plato to contemporary texts in the fields of philosophy of mind and cultural criticism. This book not only demonstrates that a philosophical inquiry into the conceptual foundations of early Buddhism can enhance our understanding of what philosophy and religion are qua thought and religion; it also shows the value of fresh perspectives for traditional Buddhology. Combining philosophically rigorous investigation and Buddhological research criteria, Early Buddhist Metaphysics fills a significant gap in Buddhist scholar- ship’s treatment of the conceptual development of the Abhidhamma. Noa Ronkin received her PhD from the University of Oxford. She is currently a lecturer in the Introduction to the Humanities Programme and a Research Fellow at the Center for Buddhist Studies, Stanford University. Her research interests include a range of issues associated with Indian Theravada Buddhist philosophy and psychology, the Abhidhamma tradition and comparative Indian philosophy.

Consciousness at the Crossroads is the result of a series of meetings between the Dalai Lama and a group of eminent neuroscientists and psychiatrists. The Dalai Lama regularly dedicates several days out of his busy schedule to engage in these kinds of meetings, which have resulted in more than a decade of fruitful dialogue between Buddhism and Western science. Is the mind nothing more than an ephemeral side-effect of the brain’s physical processes? Are there forms of consciousness so subtle that science has not yet identified them? How does consciousness begin? How do we know what we know? Buddhism, with its emphasis on empirical observation of mental processes, offers insights into these thorny questions, while the Dalai Lama’s own incisive, clear approach and open-minded pursuit of knowledge both challenges and offers inspiration to Western scientists. Born in Amdo, Tibet in 1935, Tenzin Gyatso was recognized as THE FOURTEENTH DALAI LAMA, spiritual and temporal leader of Tibet. He has served as head of the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamsala, India, since the Chinese takeover of Tibet in 1959. Tibetan Buddhist Dream Yoga and the Limits of Western Psychology Eleanor Rosch Department of Psychology University of California, Berkeley “Look to your experience in sleep to discover whether or not you are truly awake.”1 The Buddha has been called both The Awakened One and The Enlightened One, and both of these qualities are evoked by the word lucid in the way that we now use it to refer to lucid dreaming. However, the uses to which lucidity in dreams has been put by the West is limited and relatively superficial compared to lucidity in dreams, dreamless sleep, daily life, and even death in the practices of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism. As the Tibetan teacher Tendzin Wangyal puts it, “Dream practice is not just for personal growth or to generate interesting experiences. It is part of the spiritual path and its results should affect all aspects of life by changing the practitioner’s identity, and the relationship between the practitioner and the world.”2 What does that mean? How can it be accomplished? And what implications might these practices have for our psychology and for Western science more generally? In this chapter I will address such questions, first by discussing the Buddhist material, and then by examining the ways in which the effects of lucidity in Tibetan Buddhist practitioners challenge basic assumptions about bodies and minds in Western science.

    Spiritual Materialism What Christians can learn from Buddhists about integration in the inner life Thomas A. Baima Mundelein Seminary March 4, 2019 This academic year had a difficult beginning. The scandals pushed aside virtually everything else. The attractiveness of the priestly and theological vocation was obscured. Consequently, my annual academic address will reflect on the struggles which this year has brought to the seminary, especially as they affect the inner life. I’m not going to rehearse the whole story but let me begin with two quotations.   • Metaphor and Literalism in Buddhism
    METAPHOR AND LITERALISM IN BUDDHISM The notion of nirvana originally used the image of extinguishing a fire. Although the attainment of nirvana, ultimate liberation, is the focus of the Buddha’s teaching, its interpretation has been a constant problem to Buddhist exegetes, and has changed in different historical and doctrinal contexts. The concept is so central that changes in its understanding have necessarily involved much larger shifts in doctrine. This book studies the doctrinal development of the Pali nirvana and sub- sequent tradition and compares it with the Chinese Agama and its traditional interpretation. It clarifies early doctrinal developments of nirvana and traces the word and related terms back to their original metaphorical contexts. Thereby, it elucidates diverse interpretations and doctrinal and philosophical developments in the abhidharma exegeses and treatises of Southern and Northern Buddhist schools. Finally, the book examines which school, if any, kept the original meaning and reference of nirvana. Soonil Hwang is Assistant Professor in the Department of Indian Philosophy at Dongguk University, Seoul.     MIND & LIFE INSTITUTE MIND AND LIFE XXVII Craving, Desire, and Addiction DHARAMSALA, HIMACHAL PRADESH, INDIA OCTOBER 28–NOVEMBER 1, 2013 OVERVIEW The mission of the Mind & Life Institute is to alleviate suffering and to promote human flourishing. We seek to achieve these broad goals in specific ways, especially by bringing together scientists, contemplatives, and scholars in order to deepen our insights into the causes of suffering and the means by which we can support human life at its most holistic. Desire is a natural part of life that provides the motivating force for our achieve- ments. Our highest aspirations are animated by desire. Yet, when desire becomes obsession or craving, we cross over into the territory of suffering. What before was an aid to accomplishment can devolve into a source of personal anguish and social violence. Behavioral and substance addictions are the expression of desires that have become obsessions. The harmful patterns of addiction take a profound toll on both the individual and society. Addiction to alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs, for example, is estimated to cost the United States $600 billion per year. The Mind & Life Institute has chosen to focus its attention on craving, desire, and addiction, as these are among the most pressing causes of human suffering. By bringing contemplative practitioners and scholars from Buddhist and Chris- tian traditions together with a broad array of scientific researchers in the fields of desire and addiction, we hope new understandings will arise that may ultimately lead to improved treatment of the root causes of craving and its many manifesta- tions.
