Emerging Oil and Gas Development in Northwestern New Mexico HORIZONTAL GALLUP / MANCOS PLAY Gallup / Mancos Oil Play Northwestern New Mexico Bob Just, Petroleum Geologist, Ron Lloyd, Petroleum Geologist Robert Anderson, Branch Chief / Petroleum Geophysicist Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs, Division of Energy and Mineral Development Introduction of the EnCana well have had cumulative production ranging from around 7,800 to 21,000 barrels of oil A new oil exploration play is beginning to develop and 114 million to 345 million cubic feet of gas. These in Sandoval and San Juan Counties, New Mexico. A production values are relatively poor except that Calgary based company (with offices in Denver, CO), water production is low, ranging from 1,000 to 3,400 Encana Oil and Gas (Encana) has recently horizontally barrels cumulative. Early Play Development and Reported Results One of Encana’s wells, the Lybrook #H36-2307 (located in se se 32-23n- 7w, Figure 1) was reported flowing at a rate of 838 mcfgpd (natural gas) and 786 bopd (oil) from a lateral leg in the Gallup sandstone formation. Daily production through the initial 30-day period was around 440 barrels of oil per day. This well is a horizontal well with a 4,100 foot lateral section. -

Humphrey, Department Head Department of Geology and Geological Engineering ii ABSTRACT The basal Niobrara sandstone in the eastern San Juan Basin is an important oil producing reservoir. The West Puerto Chiquito (WPC) Field has produced approximately 18 million barrels of oil from Fort Hays age equivalent sandstones. Most of the Late Cretaceous oil producing stratigraphic traps that have been identified in the Rocky Mountain region are associated with unconformities. The boundary between the Carlile Shale and Niobrara is a well- known regional unconformity that has been extensively studied on the west side of the San Juan Basin in association with large oil fields such as Bisti and Horseshoe. A study of well log correlation, outcrop, core and source rock analysis was conducted in order to identify the resource potential of the Niobrara sandstone in the eastern part of the San Juan Basin. The Niobrara Sandstone is encased within 2000 feet of organic-rich, thermally mature Mancos source rock. Core analyses, including petrographic thin sections help to characterize the porosity and permeability of this tight reservoir. Surface lineaments were studied in order to identify reservoir connectivity. -

Strata are represented by the Turonian-Coniacian Gallup Sandstone, Mancos shale and Crevasse Canyon Formations. This high-resolution genetic stratigraphic study was conducted in a 1000 km2 area, and used 2000 m of measured section calibrated with 1200 m of outcrop gamma ray from 25 sections and 85 plugs. Twenty short-term cycles account for the internal distribution of facies within five facies tracts and reveal a large degree of compartmentalization. Seven intermediate-term cycles compose a long-term cycle. -

As such it liesnear the southeastern margin ofthe Colorado Plateau. The regionaldip in the study area is very gently northeastward toward the Gallup Sag which comprises thenortheastern part of the Basin. There are, however, broad, gentle NW-SE trending folds which result in local southwestward dips, and at least twoabrupt monoclinal flexures, up on the northeastside, (opposed to regional dip) that clearly define the NW-SE structural grain of the area, as well as minor faulting. These structural trends parallel the axis of the Zuni Uplift, but perhaps more importantly they appear to represent the southeastward extension of the structural axes that wrap aroundthe southern end of the Defiance Uplift, as shown by Davis andKiven (1975), and theyalso align very well with the northwest-trendingdike system in the Fence Lake (the Dyke quadrangle),Techado, Adams Diggings,and Pietown areas. Of the three structural features mentioned - broadfolds, monoclines and faulting - monoclinesare the most pronounced and significantnot only locally, but in a much broadercontext. -

Jung-Ritchie; McMaster University Abstract Understanding unconventional petroleum reservoirs and HALO plays, areas outside existing production zones which are made up of thin-bedded or heterolithic intervals, has gained in importance in recent years with the continual demand for energy and the increased development of such prospects. Heterolithic units within deltaic successions host vast quantities of oil and gas that often go unexploited due to a lack of understanding of the sandstone shape, morphology and continuity within such reservoirs. The purpose of this work is to examine the thin-bedded units within the Late Cretaceous prodelta successions of the Gallup Sandstone in the Shiprock area of New Mexico in order to quantify the fundamental processes responsible for the deposition of these sands and to perform a correlation for such heterolithic deposits. Rock Ridge and Sanostee show heterolithic deposits, within parasequences 5a and 7a of the Gallup sandstone, and were analyzed, using measured sections and photomosaics, near the Shiprock area in order to compare the heterolithics in different stratigraphic settings. -
