The workshops included: "Redirecting Young Adult Behavior" (Glenna O. Auxier & Bob Perchalski); "The Youth Services Librarian and the Law" (Gary Becker & Julie Law); and "Teen Sexuality and AIDS Awareness" (Marilyn K. Volker). This manual includes information and facts from the workshop presentations, and expands on what was presented. It was proposed as a method of providing information and training for those individuals who were not able to get to the workshops. In addition to the workshop handouts, the manual includes articles that have been published as a result of these workshops, and information about nationally-recognized library programs for young adults that libraries in Florida have organized and implemented. A general overview is provided about working with yomg adults that will help both library generalists and young adult specialists provide better service to this client group. The study found that 25 per cent of all public library users arebetween the ages of 12 and 18, the agesthat most public libraries consider as young adults. The surveyalso revealed that 89 per cent of these same libraries do not have aprofessional librarian specifically dedicated to youngati:Ilt services. At the time this manual is being puttogether, we cannot tell you exactly how many young adult librarians there arein Florida, but we know that Floridapublic libraries do not fare any better than the national normof only 11 per cent having a young adultlibrarian. Concurrent with the development of this manual, the StateLibrary of Florida is evaluating the status ofthe statewide youth services program. At the end ofthe evaluation project, we will have a better idea of just how this special client group is served. Even before the current youth servicesevaluation project was undertaken, there was concern at local libraries and at theState Library regarding the level of servicebeing provided to young adults. This concern aboutservice to young adults was heard during openmeetings with the members of the Florida library community heldduring the early part of 1990. These meetings focused on the then current status of publiclibrary youth services in Florida, and the direction that the Florida library community wanted the StateLibrary to take over the next five years. One of the key items that came outof these meetings was that there was a need totrain staff to work with young adult patrons. Out of the concern raised during the meetings, twoconsecutive projects, Developing Public Library Services for Young Adults, Years Oneand Two, both funded with Library Services and Construction Act grant monies, were developed. During the first project year, the State Library of Florida,in cooperation with the eight established youth networks, presented a series ofstaff development and training workshops. While this manual does include information and facts from the workshoppresentations, it expands on what was presented during the 1992/1993workshops. The manual was proposed as a method of providing information and training for those individuals who were notable to get to the workshops. As a way to expand on the workshops, we haveincluded more than the workshop handouts in this manual. The manual includes articles that havebeen published as a result of these workshops. It includes information about nationally-recognizedlibrary programs for young adults that libraries in Florida have organized and implemented.It provides general information about working with young adults that will help both librarygeneralists and young adult specialists provide better service to this unique client group. She instinctively goes downstairs, decamping to her living room. With her husband selling food at the local market and her five children fast asleep, this is the time she has for herself, her one respite, to help quiet the onslaught of worries that plague her thoughts. "Mama?" Her voice makes the turbulent journey to Turkey via WhatsApp, before reaching the ear of her mother. Though she dearly wishes to be in Syria with the rest of her children, Aliyah's mother seeks medical attention, a practically impossible phenomenon in her hometown, Aleppo, stemming from the sheer enormity of the cost. Aliyah's mother is in dire need of heart surgery, having been turned away from Lebanon she remains on the outskirts of Turkey. Aliyah spends the rest of the morning connecting with her brothers and sisters, who have been scattered helplessly throughout Syria, with some edging towards the borders, where food is scarce and death prevailing. The usual tranquility this morning brings her, is however, clouded. Burdened by a fresh layer of misery, afflicting displaced Syrians today, that she so narrowly escaped. This haze of sorrow came about on 4th August 2020 when an explosion fuelled by a large amount of ammonium nitrate stored at the port of Lebanon's capital city, Beirut, ripped through the city.

  • Defining Fantasy
    1 DEFINING FANTASY by Steven S. Long This article is my take on what makes a story Fantasy, the major elements that tend to appear in Fantasy, and perhaps most importantly what the different subgenres of Fantasy are (and what distinguishes them). I’ve adapted it from Chapter One of my book Fantasy Hero, available from Hero Games at www.herogames.com, by eliminating or changing most (but not all) references to gaming and gamers. My insights on Fantasy may not be new or revelatory, but hopefully they at least establish a common ground for discussion. I often find that when people talk about Fantasy they run into trouble right away because they don’t define their terms. A person will use the term “Swords and Sorcery” or “Epic Fantasy” without explaining what he means by that. Since other people may interpret those terms differently, this leads to confusion on the part of the reader, misunderstandings, and all sorts of other frustrating nonsense. So I’m going to define my terms right off the bat. When I say a story is a Swords and Sorcery story, you can be sure that it falls within the general definitions and tropes discussed below. The same goes for Epic Fantasy or any other type of Fantasy tale. Please note that my goal here isn’t necessarily to persuade anyone to agree with me — I hope you will, but that’s not the point. What I call “Epic Fantasy” you may refer to as “Heroic Fantasy” or “Quest Fantasy” or “High Fantasy.” I don’t really care.
