The 2012 season will mark head coach Lori Duncan’s 15th year at the helm of the Eastern Kentucky University volleyball program. Under her guidance, Eastern Kentucky captured a share of consecutive regular season titles in 2004 and 2005, winning the conference tournament in 2004 and earning the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA tourna- ment. Former Eastern Kentucky University All-American Liz (Guard) Sellers returned to her alma mater as the assistant volleyball coach in August 2010. Sellers led the Colonels to back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference regular season cham- pionships in 2004 and 2005. She helped the team advance to the NCAA tournament in 2004 and garnered honorable mention All-America honors as a senior in 2005. The former Colonel has helped Eastern advance to the OVC tournament in each of her fi rst two seasons on the bench. The Willoughby, Ohio native was a three-time fi rst team All-OVC selection during her four-year career at EKU. In addition to earning All-America honors following her senior season, Sellers was also selected to the All-Midwest Re- gion fi rst team. She averaged 4.22 kills and 1.12 blocks per set in 2005. She fi nished second in the OVC for hitting percentage (.341). She also ranked third in the league in kills and blocks per set. Lauren Snyder, a two-time All-Ohio Valley Conference selection, begins her fi rst season as EKU’s graduate as- sistant coach after spending last season as a student assis- tant coach. After spending the fi rst two seasons of her collegiate career at Central Connecticut State, Snyder transferred to Eastern Kentucky before the 2009 season. In her fi rst campaign with the Colonels, the Ft. Mitchell, Ky., native earned second team All-OVC honors and was selected to the OVC All-Newcomer team after leading the team in kills (336) and points (379.0). She ranked sixth in the OVC with an average of 3.2 kills per set and seventh with an average of 3.61 points per set. She was selected as the OVC Offensive Player of the Week on October 5 after averaging 5.67 kills and hitting .431 in two matches combined. She was second on the team with 25 aces and was third on the team with 235 digs. Snyder posted another all-conference caliber season as a senior in 2010. She fi nished second on the team in kills (322), points (358.5) and digs (231). She ranked 10th in the OVC with 3.04 kills per set. Snyder earned second team All-Northeast Conference recognition as a freshman at Central Connecticut State. She was a fi rst team selection following her sophomore season. As four-year starter at Beechwood High School Snyder was a two-time all-state selection. She helped lead the Bullets Volleyball Club 18 Open squad to fi fth place at AAU Championships.

Dr. Geri Polvino (inducted 2006) Retired Eastern Kentucky volleyball coach Geri Polvino, who started the Colonels’ volley- ball program in 1966 and led the team through the 1997 season, was selected as a member of the inaugural class of the EKU Athletics Hall of Fame and in 2005, became the fi rst volleyball coach inducted into the Ohio Valley Conference Hall of Fame. In her 32 years with the EKU volleyball team, Polvino compiled a 627-439 record while leading the Colo- nels to nine regular season conference championships and eight league tournament titles. During her tenure, she earned a league- record eight OVC Coach of the Year awards and pioneered the National Invitational Volleyball Championships. Prior to joining the Ohio Valley Conference, Polvino led the Colonels to three straight KWIC (Kentucky Women’s Intercol- legiate Conference) state titles from 1971 to 1973 and gained national exposure after winning the 1971 AIAW Region II Champi- onship. In a six-year span, Eastern won four AIAW Region II titles and advanced to the national tournament each of those years. In 1975, the Colonels made their best showing with a 14th place at the AIAW National Championships. In addition to her work at Eastern, Polvino served as president of the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Coach- es Academy and chaired the CWS Volleyball Rules Committee. As one of the sport’s most respected authorities, she gained worldwide recognition when she became the fi rst certifi ed female instructor in the International Volleyball Federation. An extraordinary group of individuals, previously recognized by the University during the 1974 Centennial Athletic Awards Banquet, were inducted into the Hall of Fame on Nov. 3, 2006. This group of 25 is called The Founders. They were joined by an inaugural class of 13 members to make up the 2006 inductees. Former head volleyball coach Dr. Geri Polvino was a member of the inaugural class in 2006. The 2010 class included the fi rst two volleyball student-athletes to be inducted. Angela Boykins and Deanne Madden-Scanlon were inducted during ceremonies at the historic Keen Johnson Building on Oct. 8, 2010. Colonels In The EKU Athletics Hall Of Fame Angela Boykins (1983-86) Angela Boykins lettered four seasons (1983-86) for coach Geri Polvino’s volleyball team and was a driving force on all four Colonel squads as a middle hitter. She was a three-time All-Ohio Valley Conference fi rst-team selection and she also was a three-time OVC All-Tournament team choice. Boykins was the 1985 and the 1986 OVC Co-Player of the Year and was named to the 1986 American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Region team. She helped lead Eastern to the OVC tournament championship each of her four seasons with the Colonels and OVC regular season titles in 1984, 1985 and 1986. She is ranked fourth in the Eastern record book for career kills (1,497), career block assists (457) and career block solos (162).

Deanne Madden-Scanlon (1979-82) Deanne Madden-Scanlon played four seasons and was a two-year starter for coach Geri Polvino from 1979-82. Chosen the EKU Female Athlete of the Year in 1982-83 and picked on the 1982 Ohio Valley Confer- ence All-Tournament team, she was a member of Eastern’s OVC tournament championship teams in 1981 and 1982 when the Lady Colonels fi nished those years with overall records of 36-11 and 34-15, respectively. She is listed in the EKU record book with the sixth (.306, 1981) and seventh (.306, 1982) all-time best hit- ting percentages in a single season. She also has the top two seasons for single season block solos with 77 in 1982 and 73 in 1981, and she is listed with the third best single season total for block assists with 186 in 1981. Madden-Scanlon is also among the career leaders for Eastern in hitting percentage (.306, second all-time), block solos (150, fi fth) and block assists (307, eighth). Following graduation from Eastern in 1983, Madden-Scanlon, a native of Zanesville, OH, played on the U.S. Women’s National Team and later spent a full decade as a player in the United States Volleyball Association, twice earning All-American honors. Madden-Scanlon also played on a Women’s Senior Division team that was national runnerup in 1993. She has spent the last 16 years as head coach of Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich., where she has compiled an impressive overall mark of 403-115. She has led the Lakers to 10 straight appearances in the NCAA Division II post-season tournament, highlighted by the 2005 team that went 32-6 and won the national championship. Madden-Scanlon was chosen AVCA National Coach of the Year following that season. She is married to Jim Scanlon who played baseball at Eastern. They have two children and reside in Jenison, Mich.
