Self-defence classes could soon be at your local community hall if the City of Johannesburg's Public Safety department has anything to do with it. At the City's Women Safety campaign that kicked off in partnership with the University of Johannesburg on 14 June, MMC for Public Safety, Michael Sun, said the aim is to roll out the fi rst phase of this campaign, which targets female students throughout the seven regions within the City. Thereafter it would be expanded to all women by teaching self-defence classes in community halls as well. At the launch, Sun invited martial arts specialists from the university's Confucius Institute to teach students the basics of self-defence. Whistles and pamphlets were also distributed to students. "After numerous acts of violence against women have recently been reported, specifi cally by female students in the inner city, the department decided to launch a campaign aimed at keeping the women in our City safe. "The launch follows the forerunner event held last Friday at Mary Fitzgerald Square, where Metro police and South African police female offi cers marched against violence infl icted upon women and children in Johannesburg," Sun said. The university's Dr Corn é Davis welcomed the City as part of the social, sexual and gender-based violence workshop at the Sophiatown residence in Auckland Park. "This programme has come a long way from my students educating me about child sexual abuse in this country. I put my heart into putting together a workshop for our students so that we can empower them," she said. "We want to see a programme that sees results." Students will be involved in one of the themes of social, sexual and gender-based violence outlined at the workshop for the rest of their student careers. Sun said that although the department aims to teach women to protect themselves in the case of a threat, it is important that people care for each other and condemn violence in any form. "I also urge women to travel in groups, to report suspicious vehicles and crime to 011 375 5911 or 080 075 3342, to sound their whistles when they feel endangered, to share their travel plans with friends and family and not to accept lifts from strangers."

WELISA NENE [email protected]

Zoe Bible Church Midrand Diocese hosted a career expo for the youth of Ivory Park on 16 June in celebration of Youth Day. The event didn’t only attract the youth of Ivory Park but was also attended by young people from Midrand and Olievenhoutbosch. Youth president of the diocese Xolani Shabangu said the career expo was focused on entrepreneurship and the workplace because a lot of young people fi nish matric and do not fi nd space in higher education facilities. This forces them to either roam the streets or seek employment. Shabangu said the young people received tips on how to prepare for an interview, start a small business and deal with social challenges which make it diffi cult to obtain higher education, such as fi nances. “On the same day in 2016, representatives of different higher education institutions offered career choice advice and assisted the youth with applications. It is also necessary to further assist and offer alternatives to the youth that is not currently studying,” he said. “The bulk of the youth in townships ends up addicted to drugs or unemployed. As young people in the church, it is our duty to ensure that the youth in our community receives as much information about alternative methods to build their future and how to spend their time wisely.”

For 14 years, this exciting festival has brought joy to the lives of theatre-goers and it’s back again. The Wits 969 Festival is, each and every year, one of the best places to fi nd new and up-and-coming thespians showing their stuff on Wits stages and showing the public that theatre is alive and well. The festival, which is so named as Wits University is 969km from Grahamstown and the annual National Arts Festival, has always brought boundary-pushing plays to the stage in Johannesburg – produced by professional actors as well as students at the university. In 2015, the festival saw a range of topics being addressed and brought to the attention of the public including the Holocaust, the story of a woman in India and a Soweto funeral. Last year, audiences enjoyed extreme shows including a mobile performance, bRENT, where the public was treated to a thrilling show in a moving vehicle around Braamfontein. Also, there was a production that was specially mentioned by the festival director Gita Pather, Amsterdam – a fi lm she applauded a young black woman for writing because it was not based on apartheid. As per usual, the organisers are hoping to get people into the theatre and get them hooked on the great talent on offer – and this year they aim to achieve this by adding something new. “The diversity of this year’s festival featuring dance, music, theatre and comedy is exciting with a great balance between both main and fringe entries. We are also delighted to be featuring so many Standard Bank Young Artist winners,” Pather commented. Now, celebrating so many years of the festival – almost a decade and a half – the festival will boast more productions than in recent years. This year there will be 28 theatre, dance and music shows to enjoy. Don’t miss out on the festival from 14 to 30 July. Details: Wits Theatre Box Offi ce 011 717 1381. SPwww.midrandreporter.co.za RT SEND RYAN TO RACE STAFF REPORTER [email protected]

Ryan Horwitz, a 22-year-old cyclist from Douglasdale, has been selected to represent South Africa at the 20th Maccabiah Games in Israel from 4 to 18 July. This international Jewish sporting event is the third largest sporting event in the world with 9 000 sportsmen and women from 78 countries competing in different sporting codes. Horwitz races locally for Team Formacon in the U23 category and has been part of the cycling world for many years. “His cycling career began out of necessity,” explained Penny, Horwitz’s mother. “Ryan had to cycle to school from where we live in Douglasdale. Our neighbour Peter Geldhof, who cycles in the Cradle of Mankind, invited Ryan to join and to use his trick bike. Peter was surprised that Ryan could beat him despite his bike having much smaller wheels and saw his passion for riding.” In Maccabiah Games, Horwitz will participate in a 105km cycling road race which will take place in the historic town of Modi’in. He will also compete in a 21km time trial near the coastal town of Ashdod. Participation in the games is self-funded and Horwitz still needs to raise further funding by the end of June. Details: Anyone wanting to sponsor Horwitz can contact Penny on 083 459 6161.
