CURRICULUM INTRODUCTION OBJECTIVE To introduce primary school students to Cross Country Skiing (also known as XC) and other winter sport disciplines without snow using Nordic Rocks strap-on skis, with progressions spread over four 50 minutes lesson plans. Nordic Rocks was developed by CXC in the USA as an introductory XC ski program for schools. Originally designed for use predominantly on-snow, the Nordic Rocks curriculum has been adapted by Ski & Snowboard Australia into a short series of lessons on grass or carpet. www.cxcskiing.org If you have any further questions regarding the content of this course or additional materials please visit our website www.littlegliders.com.au or contact Ski & Snowboard Australia (03) 9696 2344 ABOUT SKI & SNOWBOARD AUSTRALIA Ski & Snowboard Australia (SSA) is the nationally and internationally recognised authority governing competitive snow sports in Australia. Additional coordination and balance while performing the fundamental cross challenges can include extra circles, synchronising activities with country skiing movement skills. As the equipment becomes more partners, or combining different activity and movement skills (e.g. familiar, confidence will build and the various games will closer doing a slalom backwards or in a low tuck position). resemble similar activities on foot. Year 5 & 6 students may have the opportunity to suggest alternative games to be undertaken later in the session. SESSION OVERVIEW Little Gliders introduces XC skiing to students in a dryland setting. Leg Swing + Knee Drive + Hop The aims of the session are to: • Discover what cross country skiing is. • Learn how to move around with skis on your feet (show strap-on skis). WARM-UP GAME (3 MIN) • Develop agility, balance and coordination. PASS THE YETI • Learn about classic XC skiing techniques and movements. • Mark out YETI ZONE with cones. • Play some games that can also be played on-snow. • Tag game with YETIS in the middle tagging kids crossing over. • Everyone has to move by swinging arms and bounding. GETTING STARTED – (5 MIN) ADVANCED: add synchronisation. • Form a circle, spaced out so they can’t touch each other. • Clock turns - 3 full circles each way (small steps). SLALOM / CIRCLES (4 MIN) • Jumping on the spot / Star jumps. • Set out slalom / giant slalom with cones. • Practicing falling and getting up. • Set big / small circles with cones – CW and CCW. • Balance on one leg – toe knee nose position – add hop. ADVANCED: add figure of eights. • Swinging arms – diagonal style then double pole. • Tuck position. • Snowplough position. GLIDING TECHNIQUE • Though skis on grass / carpet have limited glide, we can still teach good diagonal technique. • Encourage students to keep heels down. • Demonstrate difference between running and gliding / shuffling. Star Jumps Snowplough Clock Turns SCOOTERING (4 MIN) • Remove one ski, scooter between cones. • Try to slide ski as much as possible; use swinging arms technique. • Switch feet; try to get across in as few steps as possible.
