CURRICULUM INTRODUCTION

OBJECTIVE

To introduce primary school students to Cross Country (also known as XC) and other winter sport disciplines without snow using Nordic Rocks strap-on , with progressions spread over four 50 minutes lesson plans.

Nordic Rocks was developed by CXC in the USA as an introductory XC program for schools. Originally designed for use predominantly on-snow, the Nordic Rocks curriculum has been adapted by Ski & Australia into a short series of lessons on grass or carpet.

ADAPTING STATION ACTIVITIES TO DIFFERENT YEAR LEVELS

The following guidance is to support teachers in delivering activities with the appropriate skill focus according to curriculum band level.

FOUNDATION: YEARS 3 & 4: Students are expected to perform fundamental cross country skiing Students in years 3 & 4 are expected to refine fundamental movement skills in isolation and to start to develop coordination, movement skills and demonstrate agility with movement concepts balance and agility. They will become familiar with the equipment and strategies. An appropriate challenge for this age group is to and the feeling of having skis on their feet. Different activities and maintain unassisted balance while hopping on a single leg and games assist to keep their attention while they learn to move around demonstrate correct body position and coordination for the using different combinations of arms and legs movement patterns. different techniques. They can successfully shift weight and change direction during games and activities while maintaining focus on the YEARS 1 & 2: game or activity strategy, e.g. making space to receive a football Students in years 1 & 2 are expected to demonstrate good or frisbee without thinking about how to move the skis. Additional coordination and balance while performing the fundamental cross challenges can include extra circles, synchronising activities with country skiing movement skills. As the equipment becomes more partners, or combining different activity and movement skills (e.g. familiar, confidence will build and the various games will closer doing a slalom backwards or in a low tuck position). resemble similar activities on foot. Game field size or activity lengths can be extended depending on the group ability level (e.g. more YEARS 5 & 6: slalom cones, longer technique sections). Fast learners can be given Students in years 5 & 6 are expected to perform the fundamental additional challenges (e.g. extra clock turns, with more steps). cross country movement skills with a high level of agility and coordination. Quickly moving from one activity to the next and introducing new games each week will assist to maintain attention. Year 5 & 6 students may have the opportunity to suggest alternative games to be undertaken later in the session. In addition to extra challenges proposed for Years 3 & 4, skill combinations such as the obstacle courses and event courses can become longer and more complex.
