We are in a country of several weather patterns with most of the eastern side of the country in severe drought with above average heat, The west seems to be running about average and south eastern Victoria is cold and wet. Our spring has been a real jumble of hot cold, wet dry. Mid November had some days in high thirties with hot dry winds and then we had some days that were cold and bitter with snow down to 800m. Last Thursday was around 39C in the Geranium 'Rozanne' PBR T/C Anemone x hybrida 'Elite Pure White' 162cell morning and then 20C by five in the evening. It is hard for us but many of the plants are really struggling. A lot depends on what triggers the various growth stages. If it is day length, then weather has little to no effect on how and when the plant grows/flowers/fruits. However, if it is temperature then this spring is a mess. Some plants respond to changes in temperature, some to maximums, some to minimums and some to the difference between the two. Whichever regime is needed, the plant needs a consistent pattern to do what it must do. Same with daylight – some plants need certain volumes of light and others require so many hours of full sun and this year they are not getting a consistent pattern. The lavender harvest will be two to three weeks late and could be thinner than usual due to so many cloudy days. We have some Begonia in our quarantine tunnel that arrived in August and would normally have enough growth for a first inspection. Not this year, none have sufficient growth and about 70% have tiny little buds with the balance just nothing. Other plants haven’t started to come out of winter dormancy. Clive’s Comments continued… ...10°C the Basil plants are looking sad and tomatoes are nearly a month behind.

As growers we understand there are a multitude of things that effect our plants and some we can control and some we can’t. The poor home gardener does not have our knowledge and experience but if they have been gardening for years, they are okay with this weather. It is all those folks who decided this year to start gardening and now are having failures that we must work with. We don’t want them giving up and going back to some other past time. I am not sure how we can do this as an industry, but we must reassure them that all is okay, and it is just one of those weird years.

While we have this crazy weather many other parts of the east coast are just hot and dry. On a recent trip to Parkes we were shocked to see how brown and dry everything was. The hot dry weather in itself is not bad if there is supplementary water available. Plants will generally respond well to a good soaking once a week if there is lots of sun and some shelter from the hot winds. However, many towns are nearly out of water and the gardens are drying out. There is one positive to this in that people have learned that they do not need to water every second day. Indeed, many plants will be quite happy with a watering as rarely as every two weeks.

Perhaps it is time our industry levies and membership fees are used to help make gardeners aware of how the weather effects their gardens. Advertise that plants don’t need watering every second day, or that if the air is wet in late spring, they need to be aware of fungal infections. Give them some guidance on how to deal with the varying issues in the home garden. What sorts of chemicals (organic and non-organic) are available and safe to use. If a chemical like Confidor or Round-up becomes a community concern, then what other options are there.

There are three sections to our customer base: gardening public, landscape sector and farming sector. We are most affected by changes to the first one as the others are generally plant aware and are more influenced by external factors like the economy or public trends. As growers, breeders and retailers we can promote our products and our companies, but we cannot effectively promote the industry. People are fickle and if they try something and fail, they are unlikely to try again. We need to keep them growing plants and not panic if some die.

It is December and Santa has started his preparation. Christmas trees are now going up and lunch menus are being decided upon. Staff, client, supplier Christmas parties are now occurring, and we are eating and drinking more than usual.
