POINT OF VIEW: EXAMINING THE MAGAZINE INDUSTRY STANDARD A Thesis presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School at the University of Missouri In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts by CRISTINA DAGLAS John Fennell, Thesis Supervisor MAY 2009 © Copyright by Cristina Daglas 2009 All Rights Reserved The undersigned, appointed by the dean of the Graduate School, have examined the thesis entitled POINT OF VIEW : EXAMINING THE MAGAZINE INDUSTRY STANDARD presented by Cristina Daglas, a candidate for the degree of master of arts, and hereby certify that, in their opinion, it is worthy of acceptance. Professor John Fennell Professor Jennifer Rowe Professor Amanda Hinnant Professor Maureen Stanton ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I am immensely grateful to my thesis chair, John Fennell, who believed in both the necessity for and the feasibility of this research. When many doubted the ability to interview prominent magazine professionals, John provided support and guidance while always keeping setbacks and successes in perspective. John has been a mentor from first semester of graduate school when I enrolled in his writing course, and I am so pleased that I could pursue a topic I am incredibly passionate about with his guidance. However, this research would naturally not be what it is without the rest of my fabulous committee. Jennifer Rowe, my other mentor, adviser and friend, was an invaluable resource, as she provided big-picture edits, line edits and, most importantly, support. Amanda Hinnant provided advice in the earliest days of thesis conception as well as the scholarly perspective necessary in any academic work. Maureen Stanton was also a wonderful resource, imparting an outside, nonfiction mindset that added another dimension to this journalistic thesis.

  • A Comparison of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X in the Black And
A Comparison of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X in the Black and Mainstream Press, 1955-2011 Daniel Cruden A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History Victoria University of Wellington 2014 ii iii Abstract Most historians of the black protest movement claim that the mainstream media misrepresented Martin Luther King and Malcolm X as opposing figures, without detailing how the media achieved this, how these representations influenced King and Malcolm X’s posthumous media images, or how African-American media representations of the pair differed from mainstream representations. In order to understand how this misrepresentation came to be, and what its implications were for memory of the two after their deaths, this thesis examines the representation of King and Malcolm X in mainstream and African-American newspapers from the beginnings of their public careers until 2011. Newspapers drew on their pre-existing views of American race relations to evaluate the importance of King and Malcolm X. During their lifetimes newspapers selectively conveyed the ideologies of both men, embracing King’s leadership while distrusting Malcolm X. After their deaths, newspapers sanctified King and discussed him extensively, often confining his significance to the battle against legal segregation in the South. Newspapers gave Malcolm X less attention at first, but rehabilitated him later, beginning with African-American newspapers. The failure of the black protest movement to end racial disparities in standards of living, combined with King’s appropriation by the mainstream media, paved the way for much greater attention to Malcolm X by the late 1980s.

Yet, they deserve the same attention and similarly thorough analysis as those present in fiction not only for the undoubtedly informational and thus documentary value rooted in writing based on the fact, but also due to the common sources of literary inspiration which they share with contemporary American novels, short stories and poetry. Here come such names as Mark Twain, Walt Whitman, Stephen Crane, Theodore Dreiser, Ernest Hemingway or James Agee that have been already placed within the pantheon of American literature, and which used to and still inspire both authors of fiction as non-fiction, also because their craft often originating from that of journalism. Therefore, in the histories of American literature and journalism a pleiad of the 20th century writers such as for example Truman Capote, John Steinbeck, Joseph Mitchell, Tom Wolfe, Norman Sims, Joan Didion, Hunter S. Thompson, Norman Mailer and Gay Talese intermingle as all of them, in one way or another, blurred the distinction between fact and fiction. Although nowadays listing these authors in the above sequence in one breadth sounds natural and even conventional, in the sixties (or at the turn of the sixties and seventies) of the 20th century the literary non-fiction trend had to overcome some obstacles connected with the rise of a distinct literary genre.

Wacker, B.A. Marquette University, 2018 The New Journalism Movement chronicled a decade of social turbulence in America by breaking the rules of traditional journalism and embracing narrative elements in the writing and publication of literary nonfiction. The magazine publishing industry was controlled by men, and the history of this transitional time in journalism has been chronicled by men, neglecting to recognize the significant contributions of women working in their midst. This study shines a light on the historical narrative that defines our understanding of the significance and key contributors to the New Journalism Movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. To better understand the way social change was defined by the writing of New Journalists, a more inclusive history of those who contributed is essential. This study provides a narrative analysis of representative magazine writing by Joan Didion, Gail Sheehy, and Gloria Steinem to recognize their contributions and to illustrate how gender influenced the style, content and perspective of the New Journalism Movement.

Contact: Betsy DeJesu | Betsy DeJesu communications [email protected] For Immediate Release The definitive history of the world’s largest ever waterborne evacuation—finally told in time for the 20th anniversary of September 11th “The greatest 9/11 story you’ve never heard.” —Garrett Graff, author of The Only Plane in the Sky SAVED AT THE SEAWALL Stories from the September 11 Boat Lift By Jessica DuLong (Three Hills/Cornell University Press; May 15, 2021) Within minutes after the first plane struck the World Trade Center, mariners began evacuating people from Lower Manhattan. Not until 10:45 AM EST on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, did the United States Coast Guard issue the official call for “all available boats” to transport people off Manhattan Island. But tugs, ferries, dinner boats, and other vessels had already begun racing to the rescue from points all across the Port of New York and New Jersey hours earlier. As the World Trade Center was attacked and then quickly fell to the ground, survivors—civilians caught instantly in a war, some covered in blood and soot—fled south until they ran out of land at the water’s edge. In less than nine hours, approximately 800 mariners aboard 150 vessels delivered nearly half a million people from Manhattan. This was the largest maritime evacuation in history—larger even than boat lift at Dunkirk. Yet the story of this heroic effort has never fully been told. Jessica DuLong has righted this historical wrong with her new book SAVED AT THE SEAWALL: Stories from the September 11 Boat Lift (Three Hills/Cornell University Press; May 15, 2021).
