21 UNSW Law Journal Volume 40(1) 11 THE LARGE PROFESSIONAL SERVICE FIRM: A NEW FORCE IN THE REGULATIVE BARGAIN JUSTINE ROGERS, DIMITY KINGSFORD SMITH AND JOHN CHELLEW I INTRODUCTION This article charts the rise of a new force in the regulative bargain:1 the large organisation or ‘professional service firm’. The ‘regulative bargain’ refers to the bargain, both theoretical and real, 2 between the professions and the state, on behalf of society. Increasingly, these parties actively negotiate the exchange of professional benefits and responsibilities, and how, where and for what purpose these will be allocated and enforced. For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] Community capacity building: Learning from the 2003 Canberra bushfires Abstract Research into what happens to communities after disasters is one way of understanding the elements of community capacity building and the actions that help and hinder these processes. In recent years a number of large scale disasters both onshore and offshore have become the focus of Australian State and Commonwealth disaster recovery efforts. These have provided opportunities to reflect on successful elements of 'community recovery' including what 'communities' do themselves to assist 'recovery' and what governments can do to enable and actively facilitate the 'recovery' process. Through an examination of a recent study on the recovery of people affected by the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) bushfires (known as the Canberra Bushfires) (Camilleri et al, 2007), this paper examines what helps and what hinders community capacity building, including the role of social networks and supports and community engagement activities. -

MOUNT CANOBOLAS FAUNA SURVEY 24TH – 29th MARCH 2019 1 Introduction Mount Canobolas State Conservation Area The Mount Canobolas State Conservation Area (SCA) Draft Plan of Management begins with the following vision for this reserve: Mount Canobolas State Conservation Area is a sentinel in the landscape. It is a park valued, understood and protected by the community for its uniqueness, biodiversity, visitor experiences, and for the spiritual and cultural connections between people and this special place, now and into the future (OEH 2018). This iconic place is an extinct volcano rising to an altitude of 1397m asl and more than 500m above the surrounding central tablelands landscape. It has great significance for the local Wiradjuri custodians. The ecological values of this place are shaped by its high altitude, volcanic origins, isolation from similar geological formations and the extensive clearing of the surrounding landscape leaving it as a relatively isolated remnant of native vegetation. The presence of sub-alpine communities is particularly noteworthy (OEH 2018). The SCA incorporates an area of 1672 ha. The vegetation communities of the Mt Canobolas SCA have been broadly described and mapped with the following communities defined: 1. Eucalyptus macrorhyncha – E. dives: shrubby open forest and woodland (26% of the SCA) a. E. macrorhyncha dominant in more exposed sites b. E. dives dominant in less exposed sites 2. E. pauciflora – E. dalrympleana: Grassy woodlands and tall open forests (51% of the SCA) a. E. pauciflora – E. canobolensis grassy woodlands b. E. dalrympleana – E. viminalis tall open forests 3. Outcrop low open woodland (E. canobolensis – E. petroc?) and / or shrubs 4. -

CHAPTER 3 KOALA AND OTHER MATTERS – THE 1910s ‘Some years ago, the Wild Life Preservation Society of Australia found that almost the whole of the skins of the koala were being sent for sale to the United States of America – many of them during closed seasons in Australia, when the killing of the animal was forbidden.’ David Stead KOALA The preservation of the koala and the re-establishment of the animal in at least some of its native haunts in the Eastern States of Australia were among the major objectives of the Society since its inception in 1909. The Society was successful in obtaining official protection for the koala, first in 1911 and 1912, in New South Wales. David Stead always insisted that 'koala' should be pronounced 'k'ola'; he also frequently referred to it as the 'native bear' which of course is a misnomer as the koala is not a 'bear.' Although the battle to save the koala began as early as 1909, action was still being taken in the 1920s and 1930s, and in fact continues even into the 21st century. The Story of the Great Slaughter was the heading to an article by David Stead accompanying the Annual Report for the year 1927. In 1927 the Queensland Government declared an open season of one month during which the koala could be killed for its skin. No less than 584,738 koalas were actually recorded as being killed during that time, although many of the skins would have been collected earlier, in expectation of a new open season. -

In a country ravaged by bushfire, stories ofwidespread destruction are shared every summer. Bushfire is a constant and ongoing part ofAustralian history, identity and culture, causing extensive loss to personal property, public infrastructureand the natural environment. Research into how individuals create meaning frombushfire may provide insight into how these experiences shape resilience. This research aims to contribute to the emerging body of sensemaking literature by proposing a conceptual framework to address how memory curation influences sensemaking froma bushfiredisaster. The study also reflects on how identity shapes and is shaped by meaning creation processes over time. The research has developed a multifacetedunderstanding ofhow individuals create meaning fromtheir experiences in a natural disaster, and specifically the 2003 Canberra Bushfires. First, meanings derived from the memory curation process and shared through personal narratives, use language devices including metaphorical or emotive expressions and sensory images. Second, sensemaking is a natural progression in the memory curation process because meaning is constituted within these shared narratives. -
