Education Kit Years 7-12 The Writing’s on the Wall - A Short History of Street Art The word graffiti comes from the Italian language and means to inscribe. In European art graffiti dates back at least 17,000 years to wall paintings such as are found in the caves of Lascaux in Southern France. The paintings at Lascaux depict animals from the Paleolithic period that were of cultural importance to the people of that region. They are also believed to be spiritual in nature relating to visions experienced during ritualistic trance-dancing. Australian indigenous rock art dates back even further to about 65,000 years and like the paintings at Lascaux, Australian indigenous rock art is spiritual in nature and relates to ceremonies and the Dreaming. The history of contemporary graffiti/street art dates back about 40 years to the 1960s but it also depicts images of cultural importance to people of a particular region, the inner city, and their rituals and lifestyles. The 1960s were a time of enormous social unrest with authority challenged at every opportunity. It is no wonder graffiti, with its strong social and political agendas, hit the streets, walls, pavements, overpasses and subways of the world with such passion. The city of New York in the 1970s was awash with graffiti. It seemed to cover every surface. When travelling the subway it was often impossible to see out of the carriage for the graffiti. After being closed for a month, the URBAN NATION museum reopened last Friday with the exhibition Martha Cooper: Taking Pictures. Over the opening weekend alone, more than 1,300 visitors came to see the US photographer's first comprehensive retrospec- tive. In addition to the museum visitors, more than 700 people interested in the exhibition opening followed it digitally. On the opening evening, the music journalist Falk Schacht and the Dutch graffiti artist Mick La Rock guided the audience through the exhibition via a live stream that also featured exclusive interviews with Martha Cooper, the curators Steven P. Harrington and Jaime Rojo, who are currently in New York, as well as other artists and contemporaries. With the two-part opening concept of a reduced number of visitors at the museum plus a live stream, the URBAN NATION made it possible for Berlin-based as well as worldwide street art and graffiti fans to attend the opening des- pite the social distancing rules. Secondly, I would like to thank my Mum and Dad for their support and encouragement throughout the master program. 2 Abstract: The last seven years have been a transformation point for graffiti and street art in Jordan. Due to the constant inequality that women face in Jordan, graffiti and street artists grabbed the first opportunity presented to them in order to address these issues, when the Baladk Street Art Festival took place in the capital of Jordan, Amman. They used this festival as an opportunity to spread awareness and tell stories related to inequality as well as claim their rights. Resistance from conservative groups in the society towards these murals resulted in more restrictions from the municipality about the content of them. However, artists did not back up and fought their way to keep their art on the city’s walls, but they had to work harder in order to disguise the messages they wished to send to the public. Social change was used as the main concept to follow in this thesis in order to arrive at a conclusion that shows the change that had taken place in Jordan due to graffiti and street art, especially social change regarding ideas and social movements as well as political processes. -

Through the works of Michael Tracy (Tracy 168), Melvin Samuels, Jr. (NOC 167), Sandra Fabara (Lady Pink), Chris Ellis (Daze), and John Matos (Crash), the exhibition examined the artistic legitimacy of a mode of expression frequently presented as a mere defacement of public space. The city of Paris similarly paid homage to these pioneers in T.A.G.: Tag and Graffiti (from March 27th to April 26th 2009) and Graffiti: Born in the streets (from July 7 th to November 29 th), two major exhibitions which took place, respectively in The Grand Palais and in the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art. Such presence of paintings performed illegally on the streets or on subways in foremost institutions of the international art scene results from a legitimating process that started in the 70s, with the first exhibitions of graffiti in New York galleries of contemporary art. -

LESSON OVERVIEW/OBJECTIVES Students will learn about Street Art, its history and evolution. They will explore the differences between Street Art and Graffti and talk about why Street Art can be controversial. Students will learn about a well known street artist named Banksy and his work and style as well as look at samples of street art from aroud the world. Students will use stencils, paints and pens to create their own personal brand in the form of street art. KEY IDEAS THAT CONNECT TO VISUAL ARTS CORE CURRICULUM: Based on Utah State Visual Arts Core Curriculum Requirements (3rd Grade) Standard 1 (Making): The student will explore and refne the application of media, techniques, and artistic processes. Objective 1: Explore a variety of art materials while learning new techniques and processes. b. Use simplifed forms, such as cones, spheres, and cubes, to begin drawing more complex forms. d. Make one color dominant in a painting. e. Create the appearance of depth by drawing distant objects smaller and with less detail than objects in the foreground. Objective 3: Handle art materials in a safe and responsible manner. a. Ventilate the room to avoid inhaling fumes from art materials. b. Dispose and/or recycle waste art materials properly. c.
